Past articles we have already considered, what skills need to be developed to improve efficiency and exercises for the development of the brain, today we will talk about such a powerful notion as “Creative thinking”.
We often hear the phrase: “A creative idea, confident in its success.” The question arises, what kind of creative ideas, where do they come from, and how to develop the ability to think creatively?

Creative thinking is a necessity for a businessman who wants to create a promising, interesting project, stand out among many similar companies, to become unique and recognizable. But not only in business creative thinking will be useful. In everyday life, in personal relationships, in a career - try to think outside the box everywhere, because it will allow you to open up new opportunities, go unaware before you get on the roads.
Today we will tell about a few exercises, the daily execution of which will help you to more creatively look at what is happening. In these exercises there is nothing difficult, everything is elementary, and in time you will spend no more than 15 minutes a day.
Honestly, we try not to write about what we have never tried. All these tips were tried in practice, and after a few weeks the result became noticeable. New ideas, interesting solutions, not a standard way out of the current situation.

Productivity

The concept of "productivity" comes from the English word "productivity". Initially it was used in agricultural and livestock activities in order to identify the most prolific and progeny specimens. As industry developed, this term became used in production — in Russian, the concept of “performance” became similar to this word. At present, the term “productivity” is used to assess a person’s creative potential, reflecting his ability to produce objects of creativity.

In addition, the concept introduced is applied in the field of personal growth. Here it can be characterized as follows:

Productivity is the ability of a person to create a certain amount of something or to perform a certain amount of actions for a specific period of time.

Usually, productivity is measured in numerical-quantitative terms, however, there are cases when it can be given an emotional assessment.

It is also worth noting that productivity is not an innate property of the individual, but acquired, which means that it can be called a skill that can be developed and improved. Moreover, if a person is productive, then this will be manifested in all his activities.

High productivity is the basis of high results, reaching which a person gets satisfaction and joy from what he does.

Flexibility of thinking

Flexibility of thinking refers to the ability of a person to find new solutions and the ability to effectively use the available source material, as well as to quickly change their thinking and behavior, depending on the situation.

The flexibility of thinking suggests that a person can see any specific situation in the development process and predict its likely outcome. Due to the flexibility of thinking, a person has the ability to quickly find a way out of difficult situations and correct solutions to difficult problems, as well as eliminate intrapersonal conflicts. A person with such a quality can think objectively and adequately perceive what is happening around him.

Of particular importance is the flexibility of thinking for creative people, because allows them to constantly draw new ideas. If we talk about scientific activity and the learning process, then the quality we are discussing makes them many times more efficient. The same applies to business: if a person does not have the ability to think quickly and flexibly, then success will be unlikely. And along with such qualities as diplomacy and flexibility, the flexible mind allows you to avoid any kind of confrontation, conflict situations, as well as resolve disputes and competently negotiate.

Originality of thinking

Originality of thinking is a person's ability to nominate new, unusual and unexpected ideas that are significantly different from the already known, trivial, generally accepted.

Originality of thinking can manifest itself in activities, communication, interaction with other people. A huge number of experts consider originality as one of the main features of creative people.

It is also important to say that originality of thinking allows not only to generate new ideas or create interesting projects, but also to develop and develop existing ones. And this, in turn, provides invaluable assistance and support to a person both in his creative work and in scientific, educational, technical, entrepreneurial, and any other activity.

But we should not forget that the originality of thinking is often associated with a critical assessment of new ideas by others. It is often possible to observe such situations when the original ideas are "hostile" perceived by other people. Therefore, a person with original thinking must develop other qualities of his personality, such as the ability to persuade and argue his point of view, resist stress and pressure from outside, lack of conflict, sociability, etc.

Skill solving complex problems

The ability to solve complex problems should be understood as a special skill, which includes two components - analytical and practical. The analytical component is responsible for analyzing the problem that has arisen, assessing it, and developing possible solutions to it. And the practical component is responsible for, in fact, the implementation of the decision, the transition from theory to practice.

The nature of the solution to any problem always depends on the characteristics of each individual situation. But the most important thing is to initially gather information about the actual problem, and only after that, already having actual knowledge, proceed directly to the solution. In some cases, which, by the way, are now becoming more and more, the most suitable solution can be found only with a creative approach.

The ability to solve complex problems has a unique property - given that this is a skill, it can be fully developed and cultivated. Moreover, the more complex the task a person sets for himself, the greater potential for solving problems he begins to possess.

The skill of solving problems, like the others discussed above, is very important for a person in his daily life, because problems systematically arise in absolutely any sphere of life activity: creativity, science, business, social, technical work, etc.

We allow ourselves to repeat, and recall that productivity, flexibility and originality of thinking, as well as the skill of solving complex problems are amenable to development. Accordingly, each person striving to improve their personal productivity and efficiency and develop their personal qualities, including their creative potential, can make efforts to develop the above-mentioned qualities.

Below we offer you to familiarize yourself with a number of recommendations and a list of several effective games aimed at the development of each of the qualities we considered.

Productivity Development Guidelines

You can increase your productivity by following these guidelines:

  • Set clear goals
  • Constantly monitor the results of your actions.
  • Conduct your activities in a properly organized space.
  • Skillfully manage your time
  • Always do important things first.
  • Remember that 20% of actions give 80% of results, and vice versa
  • Fill your free time with useful activities.
  • Do the planning
  • Improve your professional skills
  • Pay enough attention to rest.

The games for increasing productivity include the Mafia (verbal role-playing game), Poker (the famous card game), Monopoly (one of the most popular economic games), and others. In addition, productivity development is closely related to your associative thinking.

Chains of associations

This game aims to develop associative thinking.

First you will be asked to complete ten chains of 3 words with your own association. Try to come up with an association that is very well connected with the suggested words, but no other.

After filling the chains, you need to find the extra elements in the previously built chains. Click "Start" to start the game.

  • Study biographies and autobiographies of famous people
  • Use the Brainstorming method in your activities.

Games like “Enter the words”, “Drudla”, “Danetki”, as well as all kinds of charades, puzzles, puzzles, labyrinths, etc.

Recommendations for the development of skills to solve complex problems

As for the development of the skill of solving complex problems, here we can give the following recommendations:

  • Do not ask the question: “Can I?” - instead ask yourself: “Do I want? How can I solve the problem? ”
  • Look for positive aspects in each incoming problem.
  • Think of problems as an opportunity to develop and grow personally.
  • "Dig" deeper - look for the problem
  • Be open to new opportunities, even the most extraordinary
  • Develop creativity and creativity thinking
  • Solve problems as they arrive, one by one, prioritizing
  • Cultivate a Positive Attitude
  • Lead a healthy lifestyle
  • If you do not know what to do - just go to sleep

Among the games that allow a person to develop his skill to solve problems, stand out economic, psychological, intellectual and any other games that are as close as possible to reality. Feel free to take for your service “Monopoly”, “Imaginarium”, “Activity”, “Millionaire”, etc.

In conclusion, I just want to add that with the help of the information presented in this lesson, you can not only develop your creative thinking, but also improve many of your other personal qualities that will undoubtedly be useful to you in your life and work.

Test your knowledge

If you want to test your knowledge on the topic of this lesson, you can take a small test consisting of several questions. In each question, only 1 option can be correct. After you select one of the options, the system automatically proceeds to the next question. The points you get are affected by the correctness of your answers and the time spent in passing. Please note that the questions are different each time, and the options are mixed.

We remind you that for the full operation of the site you need to enable cookies, javascript and iframe. If you see this message for a long time, then your browser settings do not allow our portal to work fully.

Do not wait for inspiration

Many people who consider themselves creative individuals do not try to create anything for a long time, stating that they are waiting for a spark of inspiration. It is important to remember that the spark often flashes in the process. Athletes do not wait for inspiration to start training after the break. They just go and start training. It is important to have patience and not worry about whether the result will be good.

4. DISTANCE FROM A Creative Project

More creative solutions are born in our heads for those tasks that we perceive as remote in space or in time. The greater the imaginary distance, the more we switch from concrete to abstract thinking, which helps to discover unexpected relationships between seemingly incompatible ideas.

5. Work in a coffee shop

Studies have shown that the level of background noise in a coffee shop (about 70 decibels) contributes to creativity. The average (but not low) noise level increases the complexity of information processing, which activates abstract thinking and increases creative productivity. Too loud noise, on the contrary, interferes.

10. Less know, guess more.

Today we are surrounded on all sides with information. It is useful to put off the phone, laptop, tablet for a while and let your mind wander there as it pleases. Do not peep answers to emerging questions on the Internet. Cut off from the usual sources of information, your brain may come up with something very unusual.

11. See where you are not going.

Constant pursuit of efficiency and setting clear goals can prevent creative ideas from arising. Try, walking down the street on your business, every minute to stop and carefully examine everything that surrounds you. Unexpected sounds or views can provide a fresh perspective on things and help activate thoughts that hide deep inside.

Why is it important to develop creativity?

Today, the whole world is talking about skill, the value of which has increased several times over the past five years. This skill is creativity.

On the threshold of the fourth industrial revolution in the world, which seems to be slowly going crazy, people need to rethink their role in order to remain necessary and useful. Otherwise, what will remain to us after the inevitable automation and robotization of all industries and the majority of ordinary professions?

Even if the previous paragraph is difficult to read and you do not want to believe in it, re-read it again. Creativity in this understanding is not just the ability to find a beautiful picture or pick up a rhyme to the word “chew”, but the ability to continue a meaningful life, the ability to live and enjoy, the ability to create and be useful.

I will tell you about several tools that can be taken and used to search for new ideas at once, without having an academic education in creativity. Today will be the first post of a creative series about the basic tool of a creative person.

How do they work?

In the presence of an associative connection between phenomena A and B, the occurrence in consciousness A leads to the appearance in consciousness of phenomenon B. The process of associative thinking proceeds in two stages: first, analysis, then synthesis. You will not be able to come up with something that did not previously exist, as associative thinking produces new combinations of what was previously encountered.

Why do I need it?

With the help of associative thinking can improve the quality of life. We use associations daily. With their help, consciously or subconsciously, we find connections between different categories and phenomena, solve complex problems, create new commercial products and art objects, write excellent stories, shoot films and make fun of jokes.

You can use associative thinking to improve the quality of life:

  • for routine and daily affairs,
  • in family relationships,
  • in art, humor, art,
  • in advertising and marketing,
  • in sales,
  • when solving technical problems
  • in invention
  • for business development.

And what associations are there?

  1. Similarity. The phenomena are similar in some ways: televisionbox, cloudcotton wool.
  2. By contrast. The phenomena are opposite in some ways: blackwhite, laughsadness.
  3. By location in space or in time. The phenomena are close to each other: thunderlightning, picturewall.
  4. Causation.

  4. Re-formulate the task using the created associations, write at least 10 new formulations.
  5. Choose the most appropriate wording.
  6. To implement.

How to make a chain of associations?

You only need six minutes. For three minutes you need to write on a sheet a chain of associations to the word "creativity." Each next word should be an association to the previous one.

Chain start: creationpicturepaintpilebuffalomeadow - ... The end of such a chain in three minutes is difficult to guess. Suppose I got the word "colony".

Now you have two words: "creativity" and your last word in the chain. Note three more minutes and try to create and describe a product, service or service that combines the first and last word. There may be several options.

My examples ("creativity" + "colony"):

  • special rehabilitation territory, to which burned-out office managers arrive,
  • thematic exhibition of contemporary art, dedicated to the colonization of other planets by man,
  • auction items created by prisoners.

How to train associative thinking?

Associative thinking, as part of the thinking of a creative person, can and should be developed. The simplest ways are to play board games with friends and practice the associative chain every day.

The result of such work on yourself is more flexible thinking, interesting ideas for work and life. You can get the result in 20–60 days. Approximately the steady habit is formed.

The first method of developing creative thinking: play shifters

Our first advice is called "shifters". When you walk down the street, or drive in transport, then try to read the advertisement, signs, store names and ask in advance. For example, the pizzeria "Naples", and you read "Lopaen". At first it will be hard, but the brain also needs to be trained. A few days and you already without much effort can read short words, then longer, then phrases, and eventually long sentences.
What is it for? First of all, you train the brain, let it know that there is more than one way of seeing the situation, there are alternatives, and these alternatives should be noticed. When a problem arises, and it will be necessary to find a way out of it, your thinking will no longer oppose unconventional, incomprehensible solutions.

14. . or unknowingly

Faced with a difficult problem, we usually begin to think hard about the solution. Sometimes it creates a lot of unnecessary noise in the head, which only increases our dissatisfaction without giving clear decisions. A break can be just as useful as a short respite during exercise. When you return to your problem, there may be new ideas. You can, for example, take cards and play solitaire - this exercise takes the brain, but does not require extreme concentration.

Obstacles - your motivation

Do not confuse "difficult" and "impossible." If you want to learn creativity, then exclude the word "impossible". Yes, it can be difficult and difficult. When facing an obstacle, focus on solving the problem. Overcoming the resulting discomfort and negative feelings become a good source of inspiration.

The vast majority of inventions created to improve comfort created by those who wanted to overcome the inconvenience.

Scientific research rejects any division into the creative and corporate working class.

What to say, if in the modern corporate environment there is an artificial division into “creative” and “corporate” types that relate to each other, like students of Gryffindor and Slytherin. However, almost all studies of creative abilities that have been conducted over the past 50 years, reject this division: the creative muscle is in no way connected with genetics, or with the level of intelligence, or with personal qualities.

For example, during an experiment at the Institute for Diagnostics and Personality Research (IPAR), scientists invited dozens of successful representatives of various creative professions to the conference. Over the course of several days, they passed many tests that did not really clarify where to look for creative potential. The only common features of the subjects looked like this: a balance of personal characteristics, above-average intelligence, openness to new experience, and a tendency to choose complex options. As you can see, nothing special.

There is no creative personality type.

Then the stubborn guys in white coats began to look for creative potential in the person’s personal qualities: a huge amount of information was gathered about the outstanding creators of the 20th century, after which everyone passed the virtual test “five-factor personality model”. Scientists expected that creative people would have a bias in one of five personal characteristics (openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, goodwill and neuroticism), but again there were neurasthenics, extraverts, and benevolent drunks, and many more Who. Conclusion: there is no creative personality type.

Having abandoned psychology, they began to look for creative muscle in the human brain. The researchers spat on Einstein's request for cremation and immediately after the death of the genius they climbed to study his skull. And again, disappointment: the brain of a famous physicist was no different from the brain of a professional baseball player or a homeless person caught by a car. The third round of shooting with a slingshot on the planes is completed, the scientists are “burning” with a score of 3: 0.

There is no correlation between gene code and creativity.

When psychologists, physiologists, and simply all those who were not indifferent, left the trough, the genetics, who had unsuccessfully tried to find the gene of old age and the gene of excess weight, had to solve the problem. To eliminate the difference in genes and the influence of upbringing, scientists studied only families with twin children. Exploring the Connecticut register of twins since 1897, Marvin Reznikoff’s group assembled a team of 117 twins and divided them into two groups (identical and two-twin). The results of two dozen tests showed that there is no correlation between the gene code and creative abilities. 4-0, and this is almost Argentina with Jamaica.

Over the past 50 years, such experiments have been a car and a small truck. In his book “The Muse will not come,” David Brooks cites a dozen more references to unsuccessful attempts to find the nature of the creative muscle and concludes that creative thinking, like any other skill, can be pumped through training.

Morning pages

Old as the world, but effective method. As soon as we wake up, grab a notebook with a pen and start writing. It makes no difference whether this is a story about a walking quest for Tokyo Godzilla, an essay about a warm blanket or a sleepy analysis of the geopolitics of Mongolia. The main thing is to just write and not think about anything. The norm of the morning letter is three notebook pages or 750 words. You can use the resource 750 words and drum on the keys, but seasoned hacks advise you to do it the old-fashioned way - with a pen on paper.

What if

This is not even a method, but a simple question, which Stanislavsky forced to ask any novice actor. “And what if” can be applied to any familiar object, its part or action. For example, what if the story in the book was told in pictures? This is how the comic appeared. Or what if, instead of world news, we are going to tell what ordinary people care about? So there was a yellow press.

This method perfectly develops fantasy and is in fact the trigger mechanism of any creative process. And very fun to ask strange questions. And what if all the people drank the blood? And what if an amusing man with the manners of a dictator from a banana republic became the president of the country?

Word crushing

In the brain of an adult there is a rigid system of symbols, which at the first opportunity loves to give marks and glue labels to everything around. As a result of this automation, the brain saves resources, but this is also the main cause of narrow and stereotyped thinking. Coming up with new words, we make the brain turn off rational thinking and turn on fantasy. Technique comes from childhood and is extremely simple: we take two words of any kind, combine them into one and then try to imagine what it would look like in life. Bath + toilet = bath, Kim + Kanye = Kimye.

Torrens Method

The method is based on doodles - the same type of scribbles that need to be turned into a drawing. On a piece of paper we draw the same symbols in a row (a circle, two circles, a nail, a cross, a square, etc.). Then we turn on the fantasy and start drawing.

Example. The circle can be Captain America's shield, a cat's eye or a 5-kopeck coin, and a square can be a haunted house or a work of art. It develops not only imagination, but also stubbornness in the search for ideas, since each new doodle is a competition with oneself.

Focal object method

The method consists in finding connections between the main idea and random objects. For example, open a book on an arbitrary page, grab 3-5 words that were the first to catch your eye, and try to connect them with the subject over which we think. The book can be replaced with a TV, video game, newspaper or something else. It works great when the thought process moves by inertia.

Gordon's Analogies

This is not the easiest to learn, but a very effective method. William Gordon believed that a storehouse of creative ideas was to find analogies, which he divided into four groups.

  • Direct analogy: look for an analogy to an object in the surrounding world. In scale from his room to the country.
  • Symbolic: look for an analogy that briefly describes the essence of an object.
  • Fantastic analogy: we come up with an analogy, by bragging the limitations of objective reality.
  • Personal analogy: trying to stand in the place of the object and look at the situation through the eyes of the object. For example, how to live the chair on which we sit.

Indirect strategies

This is a very strange and interesting way that Brian Eno and Peter Schmidt invented to get the tired brain out of a creative stupor along secret paths. The essence of the method: we have 115 cards on which tips are written. And the advice is rather strange: “Remove ambiguities and turn them into details”, “Massage your neck” or “Use the old idea”. The trick is that there are no direct instructions for action, and in each council two people can see two different solutions to the problem. Cards can be made yourself and pour them, for example, in a vase or use the prompts online. For example, here.

Follow the daily routine

In his latest work, What I Talk About When I Talk About Running (What I Talk About When I Talk About Running) Haruki Murakami dispels the myth of creative lazy, telling you that the daily routine (at 5 am 10 pm) was the main catalyst for its performance. The mind tends to be capricious and find excuses for their own laziness, and following the regime takes it out of the comfort zone and teaches you to turn on with a half turn.

Do not neglect other creative activities.

Draw, write, learn to play the guitar or dance. Any creative activity keeps the brain in good shape, and their alternation switches attention and allows you to find answers in rather unexpected places.

According to research, more than a third of the Nobel Prize winners in literature were engaged in another kind of art - painting, theater or dance. Einstein, with his second passion, called music and, if he had not become a physicist, most likely he would have been a violinist.

Do not give up

When it comes to a standstill, be persistent. For example, writer Rodie Doyle says that during a stupor begins to pour on the paper came to mind rubbish. After a while, the brain stops pushing and protesting and simply turns off, letting out streams of thoughts. And Hemingway, when he started writing a novel, could write dozens of variants of the first sentence, until he found the one he believed. Then he developed an action from him.

Don't get stuck

If persistence does not help, we go from the reverse. Take a walk, do something abstract, communicate with other people. There is a theory that everything has been invented long ago, and the creative process consists only in the combination of these ideas. And if the answers are hidden within us, you just need to tune in to the right wave and hear them. You can sit in the sun in the lotus position, concentrate on washing dishes, walk in the woods, listening to ambient music, or go for a rock concert. The main thing is to do what allows us to disable the internal dialogue and concentrate on the moment.

Treat creativity as a game.

Creativity is first and foremost fun. You should not take it too seriously. I'll explain why. In 2001, an experiment was conducted in Maryland College, in which students had to hold a mouse through a labyrinth drawn as in childhood. Students of the first group went forward to a piece of cheese (positive attitude), while the latter ran from the owl (negative). Both groups coped in the same time, however, the second group of students started avoiding mechanisms, and the second group that followed the labyrinth solved on average 50% longer than the students of the first group.

Just start

Many of us in childhood dreamed of becoming musicians, artists or actors, but over time a pragmatic approach to life pushed these dreams away on the mezzanine. Betsy Edwards has a theory that the majority of modern people with age, the left half of the brain becomes dominant. She is responsible for analytical thinking, the system of symbols and the mode of action, and every time we try to learn how to play the guitar or draw, we hear her voice, which advises putting this garbage away and doing something useful.

At first, it will be difficult to step over the internal critic, but if you have enough spirit and desire, then over time his voice will become quieter, and the criticism in the “you draw as m * duck” style will be replaced by something more constructive. Getting started is the hardest part.

As you see everyone can think creatively, the only question is training. This can be compared with the lack of flexibility: immediately trying to sit on the splits, we will groan, moan and cry, but if the muscles are properly warmed and stretched, then after a couple of years you can send a resume to the position of a circus gymnast. The main thing - remember that starting something new is never too late: artists, musicians, poets and writers already live in us. Feel free to wake them up.

Morning begins in the evening

Morning begins in the evening - another interesting way to develop creative thinking. We all know that reading books has a good effect on the development of mental abilities. By the way, not the information itself, but the process of reading. And in order to develop creative thinking, it is also necessary to read creatively. Try to start reading the book from the end, and even from the bottom up. It turns out that all events will go from the climax to the beginning.
What is it for? Think creatively - think outside the box. Reading a book from the end, you get used to the fact that there are absolutely incredible solutions. It would seem that everything should be completely wrong (after all, we are accustomed to well-established norms), and in fact there are other options. Reading back to before, you think the same way. For the brain, this type of thinking is not ordinary, but it will quickly accept it, and will be happy to use it in everyday life.

Kalyaki-malaki

In childhood, when we drew something unusual, fantasized, creative, we called this picture “kalyaki-malaki”. Adults, for the development of creative thinking, is also useful to poop-malyakat. Take a piece of paper, draw something unusual, give it a name, think about where this item can be used, what properties it has. Believe me, this process is incredibly addictive. In general, creativity, and drawing especially, very well develops your non-standard thinking, helps to break out of the framework of the standard world.

Yes, no, probably

The essence of the following exercise is to come up with phrases with words that have the opposite meaning. For example, solid down, high dwarf, square ball, cold boiling water, and the like.
What is it for? So you learn to perceive reality is not standard, go beyond the ordinary. We all understand that a dwarf cannot be high, but creative thinking is to come up with something unusual, non-standard, something that will be interesting to many.

Words don't seem like

Take any word and imagine that it is an abbreviation. And now try to decipher each letter, and even so that everything is logical in the sentence. For example, the word "summer". Decrypt: Easy Raccoon Tramples Sawdust. The essence is clear. At first it will be hard, but over time the brain will get used to such games and will do everything on the machine.

Ordinary unusual

Every day we use dozens of items, and have become accustomed to the fact that they perform a certain function. But this is not enough, you need to think creatively, to develop unusual abilities. Imagine something trivial, such as a chair, and then come up with 10 ways to use it. But immediately fold back the standard type to sit, stand, throw. Think wider, don't stop at one thing.
Thus, you will learn to see the unusual in ordinary things, you can find an unusual application to what you use daily.

Stimulate the flow of thoughts

A creative idea never comes just like that. Of course, there is a miserable chance of insight, but, as a rule, to achieve the maximum effect of thought, it is necessary to stimulate. Learning this is not so difficult. Always make associations. Take a word, think with what it is associated with you, and so on. Give such a lesson no more than 5 minutes a day. And at that moment, when you need a creative idea, the brain will be ready to issue a number of associations, to invent something new, not ordinary, not standard.

Edible and non edible

This way of developing creative thinking is also good. Take a piece of paper. Divide it into two columns. From above write any noun. In the right column, write down 10 properties that are suitable for the written word, and those that are not suitable on the left.
For example, take the word "shoes". On the right we write - beautiful, shiny, leather, etc., and on the left - sweet, thick, high-calorie, and with a dozen or so characteristics.

Self director

And the last exercise, which is capable of developing creative thinking, is that every time you see something interesting, then imagine that this is a picture. Your task will be to give the name of the picture.
For example, you see a young couple kissing on the street. Such a picture can be called "The Emotion of the Cosmic Self." It is very important that the name was not standard, like “kiss” or “love”.
