In its own way, a unique and mysterious breed of Somali cats, or how else it is called - the Somali cat, in fact, is a descendant of the Abyssinian variety, the only difference between them is that Somali has longer and thicker hair than the Abyssinian.
The history of the breed
Origin of somali It takes roots from Ethiopia, which was once called Abyssinia. It was here that the appearance of the Abyssinian breed was first recorded. As for the question of where the Abyssinian had such long hair, no answer has yet been found. There are two assumptions: either it is the result of a centuries-old genetic mutation, or it is the result of crossing this breed with other feline species.
In any case, the first time about the breed of Somali cats became known in 1965, when Canada officially registered this breed. American breeder E. Magic as a result of the crossing of two Abyssinian breeds - American and Canadian, was given birth to a new type of feline, which [and was nicknamed Somali. And only in 1972 the Somali cat breed was officially recognized by the American Felinological Association, as a separate and independent cat breed.
Somali cat: description and external signs
In addition to the fact that Somali is very different from other cat breeds due to its thick and long hair, its obvious external signs are also very long, fluffy tail and small size, due to which it is also known to call it “domestic fox”.
The main distinguishing features of this breed are:
- average weight, which ranges from three to five kilos,
- The height of an adult animal can reach 30 cm,
- Somali cat, despite its size, is the owner of a very strong, muscular and flexible body with a very soft and smooth outlines,

It is noteworthy that the cat of this breed has rather noticeable tufts of wool between the pads on the legs, thanks to which the animal always has a graceful and soft gait,
- as for the shape of the head, it is wedge-shaped in this breed and resembles something like a heart. However, it is relatively small and very harmoniously narrows to the chin,
- pet's muzzle can be compared with a fox - it has smooth and soft contours. And in this case, in no case can there be a pointed shape of the muzzle,
- has a small chin without obvious bite,
- Somali’s ears are rather large. A distinctive feature is the presence at the pointed ends of the ears of small tassels,

Distinguish Somali Cat possible by its unique color: a warm and radiant color, sometimes with manifestations of a pronounced ticking. In this case, the undercoat of cats of this breed is much lighter than their skin.
If we compare the standards, the priority is given to Somali, who do not have any marks in the abdomen, on the legs and chest. As for the tail, then it should not be present rings. It is normal to darken the hair along the entire spine and right up to the tip of the tail.
Standard colors of Somali cats are:
- cats that are owners of a bluish color look very unusual when wool gives off a blue tint with a smoky effect. The presence of bluish-gray stripes on the surface of the coat is considered to be the norm in this coat, with the base being the beige color of the wool. A cat with this color should have blue pads, and the nose should have a brownish tint,
- The main type of color is wild. That is, in this embodiment, the animal's coat has a reddish-brown or reddish tinge, and the tips of the wool have a black color. Paws and chest in this breed with a wild color should have an apricot shade. While the strip that runs along the spine, has a dark color. Characteristics of the breed
Unlike most other breeds, the Somali cat is distinguished by its vivacity, agility and excessive playfulness. The movement for this breed is everything, and the game for life accompanies this breed. Inquisitiveness and aptitude for learning - The main characteristics of the Somali cat breed.
If the Somali owner for some reason cannot play with it and pay due attention, you should make sure that the cat always has toys with which it can occupy itself for a long time. Otherwise, the restless cat will find some occupation for itself, and will show its curiosity elsewhere.
In addition, this breed is very affectionate and completely inelastic. It is perfect for games with small children - the cat is not aggressive, and therefore she will never let go of her claws or bite hard even during the game. If the pranks of the cat go far, then it can be stopped at any time - one time it will be enough to stop the cat from messing around. After all, Somali does not need constant repetition of the same requests of its owner.
If you start practicing with a kitten from early childhood, he will learn the lessons, and in the future he will unconditionally fulfill the commands of his owner.
Somali cat: features competent care
Somali’s average life expectancy is 13-16 years. Despite good health, in order to prolong the longevity of a cat of this breed, it is necessary to care for it competently. Basic rules of care are as follows:
- Somali cat loves to walk in the fresh air, so the pet requires daily walks. Well, so that an inquisitive pet does not run away in search of adventure, it is enough to walk him on a leash - the cat will be very calm about such a measure of security,
- Since the Somali cat has a rich and long hair, it must be constantly combed and looked after. For this, combining with a furminator is perfect - it is enough to do this procedure at least a couple of times a week,
- Despite the fact that the cat's fur is never confused and does not roll, the animal should be bathed from time to time, especially if the restless pet has become heavily smeared. However, it should be remembered that it is impossible to wash the cat with water, in which there is a lot of bleach or shampoos with a high content of alkali and chemistry. To wash you need to use only special shampoos, which include exclusively natural ingredients,
- Since the claws of cats grow very quickly, the owner will need to provide timely care for them. To do this, as the claws grow, they should be trimmed periodically. You can use special tweezers. Before proceeding with this procedure, the claws and the instrument should be pre-treated with any disinfectant,
- as for the care of the ears Somali, it is no less important part of caring for a cat, since the penetration of the infection can adversely affect the health of your beloved pet. Therefore, it is very important to check the ears, systematically clean and rinse them of germs,
- so that the cat always remains mobile and healthy, he should provide systematic care for his teeth, since this breed is very prone to various diseases of the oral cavity,
- As far as food is concerned, both commercial and natural fodder are suitable for Somali. The main thing is that the pet's diet includes proteins, proteins and carbohydrates. It should be remembered that the mixed diet is bad for the pet's gastrointestinal tract, so the choice should be made on any one type of diet.
Of course, do not do care without systematic visits to the veterinarian and compulsory vaccination of a pet.
Some features peculiar only to Somali
Somali cat, unlike most other breeds, has the following features:
- the pet is easy to train, so with the right approach you can ensure that the cat will easily understand its owner, and it will also be easy to execute its commands,
- this breed is constantly in need of care and attention - Somali’s loneliness only hurts and drives away the depression that can trigger the development of certain diseases,
- Unlike other breeds, the Somali cat just loves playing with water and right in the water,
- these are very mobile and restless creatures who find it extremely difficult to calmly stay in one place. So, for example, if you bring Somali to an exhibition or some kind of competition, it is unlikely that she will sit quietly in one place and wait for its completion,
- although the Somali breeds are distinguished by thick and long hair, it doesn’t save them from drafts and cold,
- Despite the fact that this breed is quite resistant to many types of diseases peculiar to cats, some nuances are still worth considering: the Somali cat often suffers from gingivitis. In addition, although rarely, there are still cases of autoimmune anemia, which is well treatable,
- since cats of this breed are very dynamic and restless, they often become victims of their own actions: injury to limbs as a result of high jumps is a frequent phenomenon in their lives,
- Somali cat breed is prone to obesity and overeating, so if the owner does not want to allow such a situation, he constantly needs to control the diet of his pet.
Representatives of this unique breed will be good pets for a big family where there are children. They are very patient and completely non-aggressive. The most important thing that can not fail to please the true lovers of cats - this is a great learning Somalis.
The history of the Somali cat
Somali cat - one of the most prominent representatives of domesticated cats. Her amazing appearance is the result of a gene mutation when trying to breed exotic species. According to one version, this cat was the result of a cross between an Abyssinian cat and a long-haired cat.
The first long-haired offspring from this cross breeding breeders received in the forties of the 20th century. Such kittens were immediately rejected, but in the 60s the situation changed dramatically, and the Somali cat breed actively began to win first places at various exhibitions. A crucial role in attracting attention to this breed was played by their charming fox tail.
The peak of popularity the Somali cat has won, when the famous breeder - Evelyn Maggyu took up her fluffy mutation. Thanks to her, the breed of Somali cat was officially recognized and in the following decade received its distribution in almost all countries of the world.
External characteristics of the Somali cat
Somali cat has unprecedented elegance. Her body is graceful and good flexibility. Nature itself has endowed it with some attractive features of a fox - these are compact legs, on which charming tufts of hair are pushed between fingers.
Fluffy tail - almost an exact copy of the fox. The head of the Somali cat has a rounded shape with a slightly elongated muzzle. A cat's wide-open gaze is simply mesmerizing, and always pointed ears with long tassels will not lose sight of even a barely audible rustle.
The Somali cat deserves special attention thanks to its thick and silky hair, which has a longer hairline in the abdominal region and a short shoulder area. The final length and density of its wool is formed during the first two years of life, only after that you can make a final assessment of its color and softness. By weight, the Somali cat is not inferior to its congeners and does not exceed 5.5 kilograms, while the minimum weight according to the official standard is allowed at least 3.5 kilograms.
Somali cat character
Most of all the positive traits of the Somali cat character came from the Abyssinian breed. Somali cat, whose character is different restraint, tact and calmness, never disturb their owners if they have a bad mood or fatigue. But, like most cats, it also has playfulness and mischief.
Cheerful attitude to the man and other pets can be traced to her great love for the games. During wakefulness the cat will not create unnecessary difficulties, even during the game she prefers to express her emotions through a quiet purr than with a loud meow to demand attention.
Loneliness for them is the enemy, the cat is always active and has good learning abilities. Somali cat is completely alien to aggressiveness, so it is friendly to all newcomers on its territory, but with an impending danger, it can stand up for itself.
Another unpleasant circumstance for the Somali cat is the restriction of its freedom, it categorically does not tolerate being in a cage. Somali cat perfectly feels the mood of the owners, so it will not create problems during the holidays and will be happy to join in if there is fun in the house.
Somali cat content
In the diet, the cat is also unpretentious, good attitude to your favorite food. But it should be borne in mind that if a Somali cat is kept on dry food, then it must have constant and free access to clean and fresh water. The ideal diet for a Somali cat would be a balanced diet that contains the necessary amount of vitamins and trace elements.
Somali cat, the price of which varies from 300 to 1000 dollars, does not require any additional costs for its content, but this directly depends on the desires of the owners to pamper their pet and their material capabilities. Somali cat food costs about $ 40 per month on average.
Somali cat care
Somali cat does not require special care, it is quite a cozy place on a hill in the apartment and constant heat. But it should be noted that such cats very poorly tolerate drafts and cold, so you need to carefully monitor this in order to avoid the bad state of health of your pet.
As for the care of her hair, then this issue will not be difficult. Somali cats practically do not fade, so the carpets of the owners will always be clean, and the cat does not necessarily give a constant combing.
As for the health of representatives of this breed of cats, they are characterized by gum disease and amyloidosis, but you should not be prematurely frightened by this circumstance, because such problems can disturb the cat and any other breed.
Features color somali cat breed
To date, four official colors of Somali cats are more common:
- red-orange shade
- light beige,
According to officially accepted standards, all shades are permissible. There is no specific clear coat color for Somali cats, this is due to the fact that the hairs of the coat are covered with many transverse stripes of a dark color that shimmer, therefore the Somali cat is considered to be a carrier of ticked color. The cost of the animal itself directly depends on the number of transverse strips on the hairs of the cat's hair. The more bars, the more expensive and more attractive the cat.
The mystery of the origin of Somali
In the forties of the last century, long-haired babies were often found among Abyssinian offspring. It is naive to think that the breeders were happy with the birth of such “informals”. They preferred to keep their appearance in secret, fluffy babies were handed out, like simple street kittens. And in the early 1970s, the brave breeder Mary Meiling presented the Abyssinian cats with atypical length at an exhibition of cats. It happened in Canada. It was Mary Meiling's pet that was registered in this country as a Somali cat.
In the United States, too, there were fans of unusual cats. It happened approximately in those years when the Somali breed "lit up" in Canada, thanks to the efforts of Madame Meiling.
In America, the promotion of the Somali breed was engaged breeder Evelyn Magu. It is no secret that many bold trends in the "realm of fashion" have taken root thanks to female enthusiasm. After all, if a lady begins to genuinely admire anything, she is able to inspire many people with her idea.
Obviously, the first lovers and protectors of "non-standard" Abyssinians were so full of enthusiasm that the Somali cats were soon recognized as a new breed. Since Somalia is adjacent to Ethiopia (the country that most likely "gave" the Abyssinian cat to the world), this fact was reflected in the name of the breed.
Advantages of the appearance of Somali
In the early eighties of the last century, the Somali Fans Club appeared in America. Then the attitude towards this animal was ambiguous: someone liked the Somali cat, and someone thought that the breed was a random page in the book of stories about pets.
And yet, over time, extraordinary Murks have become increasingly popular.
What is remarkable Somali cat? A ticking that gives “chic” to the appearance of the pet is distributed evenly over its body (it does not form a figure). The back of the head, the back, the soles of the hind paws of the cat, as well as the tip of its tail, are painted in a rich ticking color. That is, each hair is dyed so that the light strip - the background color - alternates with a dark one.
At least two stripes on the main background should decorate the hairs of thoroughbred Somali. But the more tones in the hairs of the pet - the more expensive it is. The chest, abdomen and the inner side of the paws of an animal are those areas to which the “game of bands” does not apply.
Somali cat looks quite majestic and at the same time - her appearance is not devoid of wildness. No wonder one of the names of this cat is a domestic fox.
Such a pussy has a silky, soft, rather thick coat (it is short on the shoulders, on the back, and especially on the belly - long). Around the neck - woolen "jabot". Also often "pants" on the paws of the animal.
It should be said that the Somali cat is quite muscular and at the same time graceful. The back is slightly arched, and the chest is protruding. The movable pet is not very dense physique.
Other "touches" to the portrait of a cat:
- neat head wedge-shaped, with large ears,
- the chin is strong enough
- the eyes of the cat are almond-shaped, their color is deep yellow, or juicy green,
- slender limbs, oval legs,
- tail not too long (tapers towards the end)
- Between the toes of the paws and in the cat's ears, it is easy to notice tufts of wool (breeders especially appreciate pets with woolen tassels on the ears).
Photo and description
Somali cat breed is quite popular all over the world, except for the CIS countries, where it is just beginning to spread. People, once faced with representatives of this breed, can not remain indifferent to the beauty of the animal and its funny behavior.
Elegance of color
If you want to buy a Somali cat, it is time to find out what shades this breed can “boast”:
- Wild color (most common). Pet has red wool with black tips. A combination of brown and red is also common.
- Sorrel This color is also natural for Somali. Pussy looks extremely impressive - because she has a copper-red color of hair, and the tail and tips of the ears - a rich brown shade.
- Faun. In this "variant" the Somali cat is painted in warm light-cream tone.
- Blue. Mysterious smoky blue color also goes to Somali.
- Silver. This elegant color adds to the cat of mystery, tenderness.
- Lilac Color obtained relatively recently, so that - not a lot of Somali cats of this color can be found.
What is attractive cat character
Sociable, active pets breeds of Somali - the most preferred option for a family where kids grow up. Somali get along well with children, because aggression is alien to these friendly, mischievous cats. Owners who dream of a peaceful neighborhood of a cat and a dog in their home can be advised to opt for just such a Murka. And people who are very sluggish, very passive Somali will hardly like it.
After all, the breed gave these cats uncommon energy, love for games, entertainment. The Somali cat will treat the owner with tenderness. Loneliness such beauties endure poorly, it is important for them to often sit on the owner's lap. Restrict the freedom of this fluffy creature - it is impossible. The cat can just get sick, lose interest in everything around.
It is reasonable to advise those who have already decided to purchase a Somali breed baby to find (or make with their own hands) toys for a kitten. After all, Somalis just love to play - with it, with age, this feature does not "evaporate." Any new, interesting item - a pen, a plastic bottle, a wool mitten - becomes a toy of an energetic animal. Therefore, dangerous items, medicines (and expensive things - phone, player, cosmetics) should be kept from fluffy naughty as far as possible.
Somali cat easy to train - it easily responds to the adventurous undertakings of a cheerful and tender host. Interestingly, the Somali is not at all afraid of water. Looking at the water in the bathroom or “grabbing” a stream from the tap of a washstand is an occupation that brings a cat a storm of delight.
In cats, a gentle, low voice, which the owner rarely hear. But the pet owner can meet her beloved gentle purr (smart and sensitive, she is able and purring sympathetically near the bed when the owner is ill).
Pregnant Somali cats are not too capricious. However, in such a fateful period, the pussy becomes quieter, more closed.
What kind of care does a pet need?
Wool Somalia almost does not shed, is not inclined to create mats. It will be enough for the host to brush the cat's neck, belly and legs twice a week (the place where the wool is the longest). Frequent washing of the pet is not necessary - it is reasonable to wash the cat when traces of contamination become noticeable. It is important to care for the purity of the ears of a fluffy beauty.
Somali cats are not too selective in food - they will easily become, eat and food from the master's table, and dry food from the store. There is one caveat: the breed is prone to overeating. And overweight animal - not good. It is important not to “tempt” the cat with unattended fatty and salty delicacies - she shamelessly eats them (even if you have recently given her dry food and are sure that Murka is full). Delicious food is a real treat for Somali.
Most often, Somalia has excellent health. Occasionally, animals may have problems with their teeth, as well as “malfunctions” with protein metabolism.
Somali cats combined tenderness, tact in dealing with people and wild craving for various adventures. It’s extremely difficult to be bored or long depressed next to such a pet - it will always be a “beacon” of fun for its owner.
History of origin
Somali cats (Somali) belong to the breed of long-haired. There are two versions of how they were derived. One of the theories says that the first representatives of the breed appeared at the breeder Janet Robertson. In the 40s of the XX century she was engaged in the breeding of Abyssinians, but in several litters were born kittens with long hair. Janet considered it a marriage and just got rid of the "defective" kids (some gave to friends, others she sold).
Somali cats - the closest relatives of the Abyssinian
The heroine of the second version is the American Evelyn Magu. The breeder born fluffy Abyssinians in the 60s of the XX century. Perhaps the genes of graduates Janet Robertson fell to the pets of Evelyn, but the American became interested in them. She concluded that the fluffy gene got into the Abyssinian breed as a result of crossing. Later such kittens appeared at many breeders. Evelyn Magyu at that time headed a shelter for homeless animals and was a caring person with an active lifestyle. It was she who decided to give the name of a new breed (in honor of an African country) and give it official status.
The breeder was very difficult to achieve recognition of the new breed. Abyssinian lovers and breeders showed strong resistance, nobody wanted rivalry and competition. But still the woman managed to register Somali cats. At first, she headed the American Club of Somali Breed connoisseurs SCCA (1972), and after 7 years, the breed was recognized by one of the oldest American associations CFA. A little later, the new breed was estimated by the Europeans. And in 1982, she was recognized by the International Cat Federation FIFe.
All international organizations that have approved Somali breed standards agree that these cats are graceful and compact animals. Some call them home chanterelles for looks. Even inexperienced cat lovers will appreciate this breed. It is believed that the main advantage of the chanterelle is its activity and playfulness.
There is much in common in describing Somali and Abyssinian cats.
The appearance of a Somali cat breed is clearly described by CFA. Despite the fact that Somalis have a medium-sized body, their weight rarely exceeds 4.5–5 kg. And the males are always larger than females.
The head of the cat is not very large, but it has clear outlines. Its shape is wedge-shaped. Chin clear, but the bite is almost imperceptible. There should also be no constriction in the area of the whisker pads. The ears of these animals are large. Their characteristic feature is narrowing to the base. Some Somalis have tassels on the tips of their ears.
Somali cat has big, almond-shaped and shiny eyes. There is a dark edging around them, so they seem particularly expressive. Eye color can vary from light yellow to bright green. The dark strip of hair above the eyes is represented as a line that extends to the ears.
The body of the cat is graceful. Well developed musculature. The rib cage protrudes slightly forward, the back bends. The body usually does not exceed 30 cm, about the same length and fluffy tail of the animal. Limbs are proportional to the body. The paws of Somali cats are small, but strong, oval-shaped. There are 5 fingers on the fore limbs, 4 fingers on the back.
A graceful, flexible body and small legs together create the impression that the cat is tiptoeing.
Somali cats have a very flexible, neat body.
The main pride of the breed and its difference from the Abyssinians is wool. She Somalis smooth and thick. Nature has dressed cats so that there is less hair on the shoulder blades and on the back than on the belly. There is an undercoat, it is thin, but dense and distributed throughout the body. On the neck, longer hairs form a “collar”, and on the back of the body of the animal - pants. In addition, the standard allows for the presence of sideburns. Less common are individuals with tufts of hair between fingers, but this is also not contrary to the standard.
Tiking is inherent in Somali cats. This is the coloring of each hair in several tones (colors).
There are several variants of the breed representatives:
- Wild (ruddy) - reddish or brownish-red hair with black tips (a dark dorsal strap is required).
Red Somali cats have red hair and black hair ends.
In the color of "faun" sand beige tones prevail (the monochrome color the better)
The blue Somali cat has a gray-blue coat color, but it has distinct light beige markings.
In cats with the “sorrel” color, the coat is copper-colored, pinkish, and the tips of the hair are from red to brown.
In addition to these classic colors, the color of Somali's coat may be silver, but it is quite a rare shade.
Color "silver" includes shades from white to gray, without blue and beige tint
Somali cats like pet lovers because of their kind and playful nature. They are friendly and moderately aristocratic, sociable and cheerful. With their sociability Somalis are similar to Turkish Vans. Both those and others retain their vitality to a great old age. They do not mind talking to other pets, which is why they are sometimes discouraged. The sociability of a cat can frighten a dog, for example, in such a way that it will run away. But Somali cats very rarely show aggression. They would never scratch a child or guest.
These cats are real researchers. Everything is always interesting for them. The animal will not lie on the couch unless a new item is checked in the house. And when everything is learned, the Somali will start over. The cat will want to be in all the rooms at once, because in every corner of the house there are toys. And in this capacity can make anything.
The friendliness of these animals deserves special attention. Somaliyka will try to find contact with every inhabitant of the house: all family members, other cats, a parrot, and even fish. She will not bother with screams and constant meowing. But the silent cat is not deprived of intelligence, so the owner will be interested to train your pet. Moreover, the more interest a person shows in training, the happier the cat will carry out all the commands.
This “feedback” can often be caught in the behavior of cats. For example, my cat brings me his chicken toy every time when she realizes that I want to play with her. Most often this happens in the evening after dinner. At the same time it is important for her to sit in a chair.
Somali cats are sociable and patient companions
But no cat loves aggression. If the owner offends her (shouting, beating, etc.), the animal will definitely draw its own conclusions. Somali cat does not hold a grudge and will not begin to think through a plan of insidious revenge, but will refuse from human society for some time. As soon as the atmosphere in the house is improved, the cat will demonstrate its generosity, forgive the offender and begin his research again. With young children, these seals are more loyal: the animal can patiently watch the child play with his favorite toy or tail.
Both children and adults, these cats get used quickly enough, and the parting is tolerated by them hard.
Buying a kitten
Every person who decides to purchase a purebred kitten, thinks about where to look for such a pet. Many first thing to remember about the many bulletin boards, including the Internet. But such a search may not give the desired result, in addition, you can get to people who are looking for easy money. Currently in Russia there are a lot of nurseries that breed Abyssinian cats. And where there are Abyssinians, there will be Somalis. Moreover, only a professional breeder can give you all the necessary documents.
Every breeder respecting his work has an online resource dedicated to the selected breed. It can be a full-fledged site with a photo gallery of graduate kittens and a built-in forum, a separate forum, or at least a group on the social network. Do not rush to choose. In addition, while studying the found pages, you will be able to replenish your “piggy bank” of experience.
Criterias of choice
The main rule when choosing any cat - you must be sure of its pedigree. When you arrive at the nursery and see the baby, try to pick him up. Inspect the animal's coat - cold, gray shades in color should not be. Spread the fur with your fingers, inspect the hair root zones - they should not be black. In addition to the dark strip along the ridge and tail, there should be no lines. White spots can occur only near the nostrils, chin and throat. This Somali kitten should have the same color as the adult.
Somali kittens are the same color as the adult
Candidate for pets must be clean, well-groomed and outwardly healthy. In addition, the kitten is supposed to be playful and active. It is better not to take a scared or aggressive kid, because such behavior is a sign of stress, and this will subsequently lead to behavior problems.
You can get acquainted with the parents of the animal (if there is such an opportunity). Mom kitty should also look healthy and well-groomed, be benevolent. Both the kitten and its parents must have pedigrees. It is not enough to make sure that these documents are available - look into them. All unsuccessful consequences of matings are usually entered into the pedigree (if kittens were born with abnormalities or deformities). If in another litter a cat had kids with some kind of defect, then there is a chance that the kitten's offspring will inherit “bad genes”.
My friends have a pedigreed cat.
He has to tell you what feeds cats, what a kitten loves, how animals use a tray, etc. The more questions you ask, the easier it will be for you to enter the role of master. This will prevent mistakes on the content of the baby. In addition, any professional breeder is interested in the prosperous fate of the "graduate".
Healthy kitten is playful and sociable
I heard that when buying a pet in a kennel, you need to take a couple of his things and a small supply of the usual feed. The kitten must discover something familiar and familiar in the new house. So it will be easier for him to get used to the new environment. Indeed, once I took a kitten from breeders and received a gift from them. These were the toys of their “graduate”, bowls, a tray and even souvenirs.
The age of the kitten, in which it is better to take it
Breeders do not give kittens before 12 weeks of age, since it is by this time that important vaccinations are performed, without which the life of the animal is endangered. Veterinarians fully support the breeders for this and one more reason.
While the kitten is next to the cat, she brings him up and teaches him to the tray. In addition, the little Somali in all takes an example from the mother. Using a claw stick, licking, eating, playing - a cat can teach all this to a kid. If you take it away too soon, it will cause him a strong psychological trauma. Such a kitten may grow embittered or disobedient. In addition, the cat itself will push away her cub when he is ready for it. Most often this occurs at the age of 2-3 months.
Somali cat itself will repel a kitten from himself when he is trained in the basics of independent living
Hint to the breeder that you (maybe) want to take the kitten a little earlier. If the owner of the nursery agrees, then before you is not a professional breeder, but an ordinary breeder. The purpose of such people is to obtain material benefits, and not to maintain the purity of the breed. If, in fact, fell in love with the cat and decided to take it, and the breeder does not agree, then you can try to "book" the Somali. Many practice it (although it is sometimes necessary to leave a deposit - a guarantee that you will not refuse).
Somali cat content
Somali cat is different from others in that it needs to be walked. Usually, the owners of Somalis take a walk in the fresh air with their pet once a week. And it is not necessary to look for in a certain place in your city, specially equipped for walking cats. For this, any open part of the street or park, where the animal can be played, is quite suitable. In a residential environment, the cat has little space for active games, and this may have a bad effect on his health.
For a walk you definitely need a harness with a leash, otherwise your pet may run away. Try to avoid contact with stray cats (they can be carriers of dangerous diseases). Communication with dogs is also undesirable. If the dog responds incorrectly to your Somali, it can end in injury for both animals.
If you can not organize a pet quality walk on a safe site, you can restrict the balcony. In this case, he needs preparation (to remove unnecessary and / or dangerous things, to glaze windows, etc.).
Somali cats need a run
I live in an apartment building, where there is only a parking lot in the courtyard. Therefore, I am not walking my cat outside. For this we have a balcony. Of course, I had to remove all things from there. Left only a chair (for cats), a tray and toys. On the windows set grid.
What to feed a pet
Like any other pedigree cat, somali needs quality food. You can feed such a pet with ready-made feeds or natural food prepared especially for the pet. Perhaps the breeder told you what kind of food he preferred - and this should be used. If you sharply translate the kitten to another food, it may have a violation of the gastrointestinal tract. In addition, he may refuse an unknown food. And if you do not know the sooner your Somalis were fed, then you will have to make a choice.
When feeding industrial foods need to remember a few rules:
- cats like wet food more (canned food), but dry is healthier,
- the composition of the feed should include at least 40% of meat ingredients,
- Mix ready-made food and natural food is undesirable.
Some cattle breeders believe that homemade food is cheaper and healthier, but it is not. First, the food for the cat will have to be cooked separately, including the best products in the diet (and they are more expensive). And secondly, the usual homemade food is very harmful for cats. You can not give your pet borscht and chops, his menu should be properly drawn up, because the animal organism is not like the human body.
Somalis can get sick because of malnutrition
With a natural diet, the diet should be balanced approximately as follows:
- 75% - meat (chicken, turkey, beef, lamb),
- 15–25% - offal, dairy products and eggs,
- 0–5% - vegetables and fruits (spinach, cucumber, cabbage, etc.),
- supplements and vitamins (for example, grass sprouted for cats).
More than half of the diet should consist of animal products. Meat can be boiled or raw (frozen). Any offal can be (except for the liver), but in reasonable quantities, that is, the chicken ventricles should not become the basis of the cat's nutrition. In addition, as a meat product, cats can be given bones (chicken or beef, but crushed); breeders usually give chicken wings or necks to Somalis. This combination of bone product with meat is closest to the consistency familiar to cats (small rodents are just like that).
Vegetables and fruits should be in the cat's menu, as herbal products contain fiber and vitamins. Vegetables should not be starchy (low glycemic index). If you overdo it, for example, with potatoes, then the cat may develop diabetes. Few individuals will agree to eat cabbage, so vegetables should be small, they can be boiled and ground, and mixed with raw meat or any meat product. If the cat periodically eats vegetables or fruits, you yourself will understand what she likes. Fish cats can be in small quantities. It is better that it was sea, high-quality and expensive.
My cat loves corn (but this particular product is impossible for these animals), a banana (for some reason, the rind from it) and cucumbers. Sometimes it happens that she greedily pounced on green onions. But I try to limit these preferences by giving my favorite foods in small portions as a treat. And in the menu of my cat, I include carrots and cabbage (add to cereal).
From the menu of Somali cats need to exclude starch, as it is harmful to their health
Milk in its pure form is not given to cats, as animals can have indigestion from it, but dairy products are desirable. Moderate consumption of low-fat kefir or ryazhenka has a beneficial effect on the GIT microflora. Cats can be given and low fat cottage cheese. As an additive to food, you can use a special herb. If necessary, it will compensate for the lack of the amount of food offered (if the cat is not fed up), and it also contains a lot of useful fiber.
Categorically you can not offer cats the following products:
- salted, marinated, smoked and fried,
- fat (including pork, butter, lard, etc.),
- small bones (for example, fish) and river fish,
- tea and coffee,
- potatoes, avocados, broccoli, onions, garlic,
- grapes and raisins, as well as nuts,
- dog food.
The number of feedings and the daily rate
Per day, Somalis should receive food in an amount up to 10% of body weight. Approximate dosages depending on the weight of the animal are as follows:
- 2 kg - 150 g,
- 3 kg - 225 g,
- 4 kg - 300 g,
- 5 kg - 375 g,
- 6 kg - 450 g
The established daily rate must be divided by the number of feedings and we will recognize a single dose. Young cats and cats should receive more food than other categories of animals (their daily allowance is close to 10% of body weight), old cats usually eat up to 5% of body weight.
Predators in the wild can eat several times a day, but little by little. In order for your homemade Somali to be active and healthy to old age, its natural nutrition must be close to the natural. But, for example, 450 grams is very difficult to divide by 5 times, because, having received 90 grams of food, the cat does not eat. Therefore, professionals recommend feeding the animal 2–3 times a day, but taking into account its features (age, appetite, need for food, energy waste, etc.).
If the Somali cat is overfeeding, it can grow stout
Organs cats can be very different. A small 2-pound cat can eat 300 grams of food per day (15% of body weight), and a 10-pound cat can eat 400 grams (4%). Just a big and fat cat can waste less energy, and a young, nimble cat can still grow.
Kittens are fed more often than adult cats. The smallest (up to 3 months) are fed 4–5 times a day. From 3 to 6 months - 3-4 times a day, but from 6 months of age, the kitten can be transferred to the “adult” mode.
Somali cat appearance care
Caring for the appearance of the Somali cat consists of several points:
- Brushing your teeth once a month (for this you need a special toothpaste and any small toothbrush).
- Inspection and cleaning of the ears 1 time per week (need cotton buds and any oil or petroleum jelly).
- Wipe the eyes (only the inside corners are wiped with a damp cloth).
- Trimming claws (as they grow).
- Scratching (weekly) and bathing (2 times a year).
Somalis unpretentious in the care of appearance
Trimming your Somali's claws is very important, because it will scratch everything that it sees. Cats do this to remove the dead layer from their claws. Most often, upholstered furniture, wallpaper and shoals suffer from this. For trimming, use a small clipper or nail clippers. It is important to sanitize the instrument before use.
Life hacking for those whose cat is afraid of a clipper. My pet resigned to the fact that I once every 1-2 weeks I cut her claw tips. She sits quietly in my lap, but I know that she is tense and waiting for the moment to escape. You can, of course, cut the claws on one paw, and tomorrow - on the other, but it will take more time. In addition, I do not want to “stretch” the fear of my pet. My cat has a T-shirt, which is too small for her (the cat is tight, the T-shirt immobilizes). I put it on the cat and calmly cut the claws. Some people put a clean sock on the cat's head (but I think it's not very fair to the pet). Think your pet may also have an “uncomfortable” thing.
Combing and bathing
If the Somali cat will eat properly, then the fur will always remain shiny. But combing is necessary in any case, because cat's hair cannot grow into long braids, like in humans. Wool should replace each other, and old hairs often hinder the growth of new ones, so the undercoat should be removed from excess hair. In fact, the Somalis' wool is not prone to the formation of mats, and shiny shank hairs will cover the undercoat, so you need to take it as a habit to comb the kitty, even if it doesn’t shed much (at first glance).
Somali cat hair needs special care
For combing use a brush with natural bristles and a comb with frequent teeth. Many people prefer to remove excess lint undercoat with the help of puhokerka, but it may seem painful to the cat (especially if you have no experience). It will take 1-2 hours to process the cat's hair with the help of a puhoker. There is an alternative option - comb-trimmer (furminator). You need to choose one on the ridge of which the teeth are of medium length.
So that the cat does not protest against bathing, the pet is trained to water procedures since childhood. For swimming you need to use only special shampoos and conditioners designed to care for the hair of pets. If possible, it is better to find a means for semi-longhair cats. After bathing the hair can be wetted with a towel and dried with a hairdryer.
Donut (this is my sister's cat) is dried with a hairdryer. As a child he was afraid of noise and vibration, and now he got used to it and even adapted (closes his eyes and gets pleasure). And they taught him gradually (every time during the work of the hairdryer the cat was stroked and warmed with warm air). It took about a year to get accustomed to this procedure.
The evils of Somali
Somali cats are considered to be strong animals with strong immunity, but this does not mean that such a cat can not get sick. For example, if you do not follow the pet's mouth, it can form tartar. If you ignore the rule about the need to clean the ears, the inflammatory process can begin. But these ailments are characteristic of most domestic cats. And there are more serious diseases that are laid in animals at the genetic level.
Progressive retinal atrophy
Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) is a disease characteristic of Somali cats and leading to total blindness.
Somalis may have a mutation determined by a special gene (CEP290). He is responsible for the synthesis of defective protein, due to which atrophy of rods and cones (photoreceptors) occurs. And the kittens can be born sighted, and they will begin to go blind in 6-7 months. At the age of 5 years, they can completely lose their sight.
To identify such a disease can be using electroretinography. A method for treating pathology has not yet been found, so prevention is the only important thing so far: so that the harmful gene does not get into the Somali cat genus, it is necessary to carefully prepare for mating with the help of DNA testing.
Hemolytic anemia (RK-dependent anemia). It arises and progresses due to the instability of red blood cells - red blood cells. This phenomenon occurs in cats that are deficient in a special enzyme responsible for glycolysis (glucose oxidation). Experienced breeders know about the heredity of their cats, so they are immediately derived from the breeding program. If this is not done, the cat's pregnancy can provoke anemia, which will lead to the death of her and all her offspring. If such heredity is found in your cat, you can extend the life of the animal, but for this you need to regularly carry out compensatory therapy.
Some vets do not practice specific disease therapy. When a cat suffers from an intractable disease, the owner has to ring up and visit a dozen veterinary clinics in search of a specialist who will take up the case. Most likely, the treatment of a cat will cost the owner expensive.
Somali cats are predisposed to a number of genetic diseases, so when you buy a kitten, you should carefully study its pedigree
In time to identify any disease and help your pet, you need to regularly visit the vet and do not forget about vaccinations. The Somali owner can get a special cat diary, which will contain reminders of vaccinations, animal diets, and even the frequency of visits to the grooming salon.
Disadvantages of appearance
Somali kitten can be born with minor deviations from the standards. Owners of domestic cats may not be frightened by these defects, but if you plan to participate in exhibitions or championships, even the slightest deviation can turn into a problem. The defects of the Somali cat include the following defects:
- rough physique
- short tail,
- heavy head
- extra toes,
- not letting testicles in the scrotum,
- the presence of gray undercoat,
- blurred tone of wool
- lack of ticking (each hair is colored evenly and in one color),
- no dark outline around the eyes.
Such defects may not affect the health and well-being of the animal, but in the championship it will be disqualified. Many of these defects are practically undetectable at an early age, but as they mature they will become more apparent. You need to remember to make such important data in the pedigree of the pet.
The most common blemish of Somalis is the lack of ticking.
Breeding somali breed
In part, Somali kittens are highly valued due to the fact that Somali cats give little birth. Infertile individuals are encountered, and healthy individuals of reproductive age encounter difficulties during pregnancy. For these reasons, it is necessary to treat the issue of breeding Somalis with full responsibility.
The first estrus of a Somali cat occurs at about 8 months, but usually the first mating is organized after a year. If the cat is not sterilized and constantly flows, but it does not knit, it can lead to infertility. The entire reproductive system of an animal suffers from hormonal disruptions, most often this leads to the formation of cysts and polyps (and sometimes ends with oncology).
Usually the cat is taken to the cat, and not vice versa. Mating partner must be the best representative of the Somali breed.
If you do not know where to find a partner for the cattery, contact the same cattery where you took your cat. Некоторые предпочитают довериться объявлениям (так дешевле и быстрее), но это будет не разведение породы, а обычное размножение.Kittens born to an untested cat may die at birth, and if they survive, they will not be considered pedigree, they cannot be sold at a high price, and they will not be able to participate in further breeding work.
Somali kittens have a high mortality rate immediately after birth. Therefore, it is necessary beforehand (preferably before the first heat) to pass genetic tests, on the basis of which a partner will be selected later.
Breeding Somali cats - difficult and painstaking work
If the cat is pedigree, then its health will be at risk only with the best cat, which has awards in exhibitions.
At what age to give a pet to the first mating
Despite the Somali’s early first heat, one cannot respond to its first “demand”. Too early pregnancy can lead to unpleasant consequences:
- slow growth and development of the cat,
- the birth of a weak offspring,
- severe course of gestation and childbirth,
But not only cats can experience the negative effects of early breeding. Premature use of a cat as a manufacturer also carries the risk of:
- growth and development retardation
- negative impact on the formation of appearance,
- violations of exterior signs,
The first mating of the Somali pet should occur after the complete formation of the genitals and the completion of the basic development of the body. Only in this case there is a chance to get high-quality offspring without compromising the health of your pet. Usually Somali cats are ready for the first mating at the age of 12-14 months. Experienced breeders let 2–3 estrus pass before the first viscous.
How often can you give birth to a Somali cat
The nature of cats is arranged in such a way that they can give birth once every three months (3-4 times a year). Many unscrupulous owners of purebred cats use this (and the desire to get as many kittens for sale is understandable). But too frequent childbirth can tire Somali, and it will harm her health. Between the birth of the cat must have time to relax and gain strength. Veterinarians and breeders recommend keeping pauses between matings - from 8 to 12 months.
If a Somali cat gives birth too often, it can get sick
Somali cats need special attention in terms of breeding. If you only need a cat as a tool for the production of kittens, then a Somali is not your option. This cat can not get pregnant for a long time, and if she succeeds, then she needs careful care. It is for this reason that Somali females are valued more than cats.
Castration and sterilization
Castration and sterilization is an operation that results in the removal of the sex glands of the animal. It used to be considered that castration was not human to pets. And now there are people who are even afraid to present their pet neutered. However, these fears most often consist of ignorance of the subtleties of the question and groundless pity for their pet. Some owners think that the animal after sterilization / castration will surely grow full and become sluggish. In fact this is not true.
Cats and cats become stout due to improper nutrition and impaired metabolism. All this in the hands of the owner. A cat that has gained excess weight feels heavier. Such animals get tired faster. It is hard for a full cat to rearrange his legs, and not something like jumping from a chandelier to a dresser. If this behavior is associated with castration, it is only indirectly.
After castration, the cat does not necessarily become sluggish and fat.
Another fear of inexperienced owners is that the pet is supposed to become a middle-sex animal. But sex hormones are produced not only by the testicles or ovaries. In any case, the animal remains adrenal glands, so the hormones will support your favorite features in your pet.
Such operations are recommended for all Somali cats that are not involved in breeding. That is, if you do not plan to get offspring from your cat, then you should not force her to go into heat. This will kill your darling (the cat may be sick from abstinence), so you need to either give it to give birth or operate. Kotov is operated because they begin to behave strangely from abstinence, mark walls (by the way, cats can do it too) and hooliganism.
Somali cat care after surgery
If the operation itself can last 15–20 minutes, then postoperative care takes one or even two weeks. The next day after surgery is especially difficult. The animal may appear lethargic and sleepy. This can be combined with aggression. If the cat rushes at you or, on the contrary, hides - do not be alarmed. Take an understanding of the behavior of the animal, the hormones of the cat is rebuilt, in addition, she is experiencing physical discomfort. In the first 12 hours after the operation, the cat will move away from anesthesia (now waking up, then falling asleep again). At this time, there is often no appetite, but thirst can be exacerbated.
During the week you need to protect the cat from excessive activity. It is better not to let her jump and run. If the pet has a house, then its bottom must be covered with soft bedding. While the cat is sleeping, you need to look after it (if vomiting begins, it may choke). Bringing the cat for a walk at this time is not necessary. And also try not to allow children to the animal (the cat needs rest). If the veterinary surgeon put on a cat a blanket or Elizabethan collar - do not remove them without the permission of the doctor.
On the cat's fur, blood may be caked during the operation, but in no case should the cat be washed. It is not recommended even to simply wipe a small area of the abdomen. As soon as the cat gets stronger, she will lick everything. In addition, you need to wash the tray after each visit (to avoid infections). For convenience, paper can be used instead of filler.
After the operation, the pet must be surrounded by care and attention.
Some cats and cats after anesthesia sleep with their eyes open. This is considered normal, but may scare the owners. To pet's eyes do not dry out, you can bury a drop of a special solution in their corners (the vet will tell you exactly what kind of drops fit your cat). In addition, you need to take care of the restoration of the animal through food and drink. If the cat refuses to drink, you can pour some water directly into her mouth with a pipette. Approximately 12 hours after the operation, food can be offered to the animal. First, the pet may refuse, but to wake up the appetite, you can give him some kind of delicacy (just a drop, just to lubricate the gums).
Some give the cat to lick a cotton swab dipped in sugar syrup.
The rest of the time you just need to monitor the state of the animal. Sometimes complications occur only in 1–2 weeks. Symptoms may include the following symptoms:
- bleeding from the genitals or reddish urine,
- a dream that lasts for many hours on end
- for several days the animal refuses food and water,
- staggering gait or limp
- swelling of the muzzle
- diarrhea, vomiting,
- respiratory failure,
- severe pain (you can identify them by the reaction of the cat to the feeling), itching,
- unpleasant smell emanating from the seam or the seam is hot to the touch,
- severe redness or discharge of fluid from the seam (exudate),
- increased salivation.
If at least one of the listed symptoms appears, the pet needs to be shown to the vet as soon as possible.
Sometimes there are such situations when you urgently need to call the veterinarian, and you do not have the necessary number on hand. Searching the Internet, trying to reach a landline phone only takes precious time and makes you even more nervous. Our veterinarian's number is written on a piece of paper that is “magnetic” to the refrigerator. This is a mobile phone number, and the vet always answers the call, even if the clock is long past midnight. And I also have contacts of duty doctors (just in case, all of a sudden I will not be at home, and the cat will urgently need a doctor).

The inherent quality of the Somali cat's character is nothing irrepressible curiosity. The pet will again and again explore every inch of living space. Curiosity does not allow the cat to lie down on the couch, but pushes in search of new toys and objects for study.
Individual words worthy of playfulness of the animal. In the course are any toys with which the kitten, and then the adult cat will play tirelessly. Indeed, with age, the activity of the four-legged pet will not decrease, but will remain at the same level. A pet will not be able to be a sofa cat because of its mobility and the desire to be at once in all parts of an apartment or house.
If there are other pets in the house, the Somalis will immediately have friends - she will find contact with all animals, be it a rodent, a bird or a dog. It will not ignore the inhabitants of the aquarium or terrarium.
Domestic cats are very friendly, well perceive children of any age who are in the room and actively want to be included in their games.
This pet will not bother the owners with loud sounds, as the breed is very silent.
The intellect of the cat makes it a capable student. Somalis will gladly accept the training with the patient and interested attitude of their owner.
Will not tolerate somali cats aggression, however as an exception will show patience to small children. Animals subtly capture the mood of their owner and will not impose their society if the owner is not located to this.
Cat guests are always welcome, and will eagerly join in the general conversation, demonstrating the best traits of their character.
Care and maintenance of Somali cats

Thick wool coat needs to be combed. This procedure is recommended to perform once a week. It is not necessary to wash your pet often. It will be enough to do this only a few times a year, but always with clean water that does not contain chlorine, and a special shampoo. Mandatory regular care of the ears and trimming claws. Ears can be cleaned with a dry, clean cloth.
An important part of keeping a Somali cat is the diet. It must be complete, contain meat and fish.
With good care, Somali cats live 13-17 years
Diseases of the Somali breed
Such animals have very few diseases peculiar exclusively to this breed. Somalis can get gingivitis, so the owner must certainly monitor the cleanliness of the mouth and teeth.
A pet can have autoimmune hemolytic anemia, a very rare disease in cats. The treatment is effective.
In general, Somalis is resistant to cat diseases due to good health.

The character of the representative of the Abyssinian breed
Somali cats are born with a large supply of natural energy and curiosity, the ability to put everything upside down in a short period of time. Somali cat has a unique character: affectionate, gentle, sociable, playful, agile, curious, all the time in motion.
Somalia love to communicate, they are not afraid of others, get along well with children and do not show aggression. They are very devoted to the person, they adore when they are paid attention, they love to cuddle and caress. If the pet does not pay due attention - he begins to play pranks, entertaining himself, and can strongly bother.
Somali cats love to play with balls, balls, small light objects - they throw them up, catch, roll on the floor, are not indifferent to hanging toys.
Somali curiosity knows no boundaries - they are constantly exploring something, they are hunting for something, everything is interesting for them and they do not think about their own safety.
This breed is prone to training, easily responds to the call of the owner, can bring small objects, is not afraid of water.
Choosing a somali kitten
The price of a breeding Somali cat with a full package of documents varies from 500 to 2000 US dollars. The cost of a kitten depends on the cattery and pedigree of the kitten itself. In this case, keep in mind that a cat is more expensive than a cat.
Plain Somali - a friend and family pet, not intended to participate in exhibitions, will cost much less, about 200-300 dollars. These kittens do not impose high requirements - the main thing that the pet was healthy, active, inquisitive.
Features care and care for the breed
Somali Shalunishka does not require any special care: attention, games and care - this is what your pet needs first. Caring for a pet is manifested in the form of adherence to proper nutrition, provision of personal space to the pet, attention to his health and care for his appearance.
The best conditions for cats
Somalia is very playful and restless cats, they spend all the time in motion, they love to climb and climb furniture. Therefore, the animal needs to create its corner: a tall tree, preferably not one, and a large number of toys. This little animal plays everything and everyone, and if it doesn’t have its own things for entertainment, your favorite things will be used.
One of the favorite games of this breed is the game of hide and seek. Please do not refuse your pet a pleasure, play this game with him - get a lot of positive emotions!
Stubbornness is the hallmark of Somali. When a cat chooses a place for its toilet, it is almost impossible to convince her to go elsewhere. It is much easier to put the tray in the place chosen by the cat than to constantly clean up after it.
How to care for your pet
The thick coat of the animal needs regular grooming, it needs to be combed at least twice a week. If the wool is not combed, it becomes tangled and tangles are formed.
Bathing Somali kittens, despite the fact that they are very fond of water, should be no more than 4-6 times a year.
As dirt accumulates in the auricle of a pet, it must be cleaned with a clean, damp sponge.
For the maintenance and development of muscle tissue in the diet of the pet should be meat, fish and dairy products. Animals that are kept on natural nutrition, need to be fed with fresh vegetables and give them vitamins, which include taurine.
When feeding a kitten with ordinary food, it should be remembered that the ratio of meat and plant food is 3: 1. Twice a week you should give steamed boiled fish, eggs, vegetable oil and fish oil.
Somali cats have a rather fragile health. Despite their thick coat, they easily catch cold — they are afraid of drafts. The nervous system of the animal also does not differ in strength, with a rude relationship with the animal or excessively harsh treatment of him, the pet becomes fearful, nervous, partly aggressive.
This breed suffers from barrenness. Often there are cases that a healthy cat for all signs can not get pregnant the first time.
The following diseases are hereditary for representatives of the Somali breed: dislocation of the patella, deficiency of pyruvate kinase, its activity and, as a result, hemolytic anemia.
Amyloidosis, that is, a violation of protein metabolism, is an incurable disease, and Somali has a tendency to this disease, especially females.
Vaccinations for kittens
At the age of 9 weeks, the kitten is given its first vaccine; it will save him from such unpleasant diseases as distemper, rhinotracheitis, chlamydia and calicivirosis.
Re-vaccination is repeated after 4 weeks, but the rabies vaccine of the animal is administered at the request of the owner with the first or second vaccination.
The following vaccination is given to the kitten when it reaches one year old, and then once a year.
So, deciding to have a Somali breed pet, be prepared for unexpected troubles and active games. Somalia will not leave a place for boredom in your life. She behaves like a restless child, but at the same time she is a very devoted and loving cat.
Head and muzzle
The head has the form of a modified wedge. The outlines are rounded, without any angularities. There is a slight bend at the transition from the forehead to the nose. The muzzle narrows slightly in front of the vibrissa pads. The ears are large and wide, cup-shaped with developed pubescence inside the auricle. The eyes are almond-shaped, expressive and large. The light area of the hair around the eyes is encircled by a dark border, and on top there is always a vertical stroke towards the ear. Eye color is golden or green.
The body is flexible, graceful. The chest is well developed. The back is slightly arched, it seems that the cat is always ready to jump. Addition is average, not easy, but not too dense. Paws are proportional. The tail is thick at the base, of medium length with good pubescence.

Kitten selection and Somali price
Breeders who breed Somali cats, as well as the representatives of the breed themselves, become more and more every year. Therefore, to buy a purebred kitten is not so difficult, especially if it does not impose high requirements.
Choosing a Somali kitten is very important to evaluate his parents, their external data and character. Attention is also paid to the conditions of keeping cats, their diet, appetite and appearance. By the time of moving to a new home, the baby must be vaccinated, accustomed to the tray, and ideally to the scraper.
The cost of Somali kittens varies in a wide range. Kids pet-class usually cost 15-25 thousand rubles. If kittens were born from pedigree parents, but do not have documents, their cost immediately drops to 5,000-10,000 rubles. Some representatives of the breed of elite lines or rare colors can cost significantly more - from 40,000 rubles. and higher.
Any color of the Somali cat causes enthusiastic ahanya and ohanii. But this is not a reason to lose vigilance when buying.
If you decide to buy a Somali cat, make sure that there is no sandy, gray color, black basal zones in its color. Also make sure that there are no residual drawings on the body of the animal:
- stains on the body,
- strips on paws.
All these signs indicate a lack of breed, but an indicator that accurately leads the kitten to disqualification is the presence of white spots everywhere except the throat, chin and nostril zone. In addition, from the point of view of the breed, the presence of the hooked tip of the tail is considered unacceptable.
In appearance, the Somali cat kitten must be agile, playful and strong. It is better not to take a kitten that looks aggressive or scared, take a friendly animal.
Usually, the first estrus of a Somali cat begins at 8 months. But it is still too early for motherhood, it is better to wait up to a year.
This breed suffers from barrenness, and even healthy cats often cannot become pregnant for a long time. In this regard, the price of the Somali cat is kept at a high level.
Kittens should be kept near the mother until the age of three months. If you pick up babies earlier, they will fall into a stressful state, which will affect their future upbringing and even health.
If the Somali cat does not knit, heat will occur more often. If you completely abandon the cat, regarding reproduction, as a result, it will disrupt the functions of the reproductive system, will begin to form cysts and polyps.
After the mating of the Somali cat has successfully completed, you can start preparing for the appearance of offspring.
Somali pregnancy, like other cats, bears for 65 days.
Newborn Somali cubs inherit a bright color, the expressiveness of which only grows as the animal matures. Small kittens are very mobile and inquisitive, and in search of new and interesting things can go where they should not, therefore they require a certain supervision.
What do the owners say about the Somali cat
If you have a Somali cat in your house, you probably read the reviews on the Internet in advance. But just going to have Somalis, you can still look for available information. We want to present to your attention the review left on our site by the real owner.
Egor, 25 years old.
Somalis are not in vain described as very active animals. These are real fidgets. At least, my cat Franklin confirms this: for 3 years of life in my apartment, I have never noticed that he was sitting idle, if he didn’t sleep, of course.
Looking at his lovely face, you would never think that he is able to scratch, bite and somehow rebel. But this is a deceptive impression.
This Somali cat, like a pirate from his homeland, is constantly looking for some kind of adventure. And the more dangerous they are, the more satisfied his sly little face. He is constantly, literally “fading out” my attention - if he is set to play, he will not lag until he gets tired of himself, and it doesn't matter if I want to communicate with him or not.
He always needs to climb somewhere, watch something, study everything that catches the eye.
Franklin will not miss a chance to fool around and repack, for example, he can pull off some small necessary thing right under my nose, as soon as I gape, dump it on the floor, and even hide it somewhere under the sofa. Sometimes you want so much to scrape it by the scruff of its head ... But it's a pity. And without these his tricks it would even be boring.
Anyone who does not need a bland monotonous life alone with a constantly snoring cat, I advise you to buy a Somalian - life will be fun, with a twinkle))
