What causes acne on the head

Acne on the head looks like the most common, appearing on other parts of the body. They are red bumps with white heads.

In general, acne - this concept is quite extensive, covering several problems at once. Most often there are the following types of them:

  • Acne This problem is considered the most common. As they are called in simple language, acne is a blocked and inflamed sebaceous glands that are responsible for producing skin secretion. Usually they look like small black or gray dots, but during inflammation they can redden and fill with pus.
  • A comedo is a kind of cyst, which is formed by blockage and inflammation of the mouth of the hair follicle. Such an education looks like a common pimple, but its distinguishing feature is that it is located at the base of the hair, that is, above the bulb.
  • A boil is an acute purulent inflammation of the hair follicle, sebaceous gland, and surrounding tissues. It is impossible to call such an ordinary acne, and it is impossible to confuse it with comedo and acne, because the boil has impressive dimensions, causes discomfort, causes pain and a number of other unpleasant symptoms, up to a rise in body temperature.

Why appear?

Causes of acne in hair can be very diverse:

  • In women, this problem may be due to hormonal disruptions. Since it is hormones that are partially responsible for the work of the sebaceous glands, when you change their number, the production of skin secretion can significantly increase.
  • The furuncle is a consequence of damage to the skin and penetration of pathogens through it. On the head, such formations often appear in men who shave with a typewriter or a razor.
  • Reduced immunity. It would seem that there is absolutely no connection between the work of the immune system and acne. In fact, it is. The fact is that the skin is damaged quite often, but many microtraumas go unnoticed. Meanwhile, bacteria easily penetrate through them. If the immunity is strong, then he copes with such attacks. If not, then purulent inflammation occurs.
  • Improper nutrition. The food we eat can also cause some changes in the work of the sebaceous glands. Especially harmful sharp foods, fast food, fatty, smoked, fried, sweet.
  • Hereditary factor. For example, if the skin is oily by nature, and it is such in your immediate family, then acne is sure to bother you all.
  • Stress. As you know, "all diseases of the nerves." And skin problems are no exception. Nerve strain can cause disturbances in the sebaceous glands, as well as the immune system, resulting in acne.
  • The cause of red spots can also be an allergic reaction, for example, to shampoo or hair spray.
  • Non-compliance with personal hygiene. For example, if you wash your head too seldom or carelessly, then dead skin particles, as well as dust particles, can clog pores and provoke blockage of sebaceous glands.
  • Poor quality water used when washing water. Some of its components can settle on the surface of the scalp and also clog pores. The result will be comedones or acne.
  • Damage to the hair follicles, for example, due to too aggressive combing, or because of tight hair (tails, African braids and so on). In this case, as a result of injury, inflammation may begin.
  • Some diseases accompanied by metabolic disorders.

  5. Try changing the shampoo to a higher quality and natural. Perhaps it is he who causes acne.
  6. If you have chronic diseases, then do everything to avoid their aggravation.
  7. Try to keep a calm lifestyle, do not be nervous.
  8. Use hairbrushes with the teeth rounded off at the ends and discard the tight hairstyles.
  9. Get rid of acne can help some folk remedies. For example, tar soap, which can be used as a solution for treating the scalp, has proven itself well. You can also try using apple cider vinegar. Simply dilute it with water (the proportions should be equal) and use for rinsing after each shampooing. Make a mask by mixing two tablespoons of honey and a teaspoon of cinnamon. Apply the mass on the scalp for half an hour, then rinse with warm water. Very effective decoctions of medicinal plants, for example, calendula or chamomile. You can also lubricate acne tea tree oil, it has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties.

In men, in connection with short haircuts, rashes immediately catch the eye. But women who discover acne on their head should not be taken lightly to this. After reading the article with a photo, you will find out what types of skin rashes are, why they appear, what you can cure them.

Why do acne appear on the head?

Bacteria that have managed to overcome the hydrolipidic film, which is one of the layers of the skin and performs a protective function, penetrate into the deeper layers, causing inflammation, which manifests itself as acne. Painful discomfort, which is accompanied by even the smallest pimple, is aggravated by combing hair. Before you start fighting inflammation on the skin, you need to understand the reasons for their appearance. They can be very diverse, both internal and external. For convenience, the main causes of acne on the head are divided into several categories.

In adults

  • Unstable hormones provoke a rash on the skin in women, especially often this happens when the menstruation cycle is broken.
  • A more global cause of female eruptions in the form of acne on the head may be polycystic ovarian cancer: when the body works in a heightened mode, the skin's oily skin rises.
  • In men, acne on the surface of the scalp appears when changes occur in testosterone, the sex hormone.
  • Often, stressful situations lead to problems with the adrenal glands, then a malfunction in the debugged system of the body produces a result in the form of acne on the skin in the hair area.
  • Taking certain medications can cause the body to react in the form of a rash over the skin.
  • With colds, from hypothermia, purulent acne, boils, including on the head, may appear throughout the body.
  • A simple cause of acne on the hairy surface of the scalp can be trivial, hiding in the wrong choice of shampoo, the composition of which has an individual intolerance.
  • Poor quality chlorinated water dries the skin, the sebaceous glands begin to work hard, pustular eruptions appear in the hair of the head.
  • Use synthetic pillows for a night of rest. The scalp does not breathe, sweats, inflammation, acne.
  • Very frequent or, on the contrary, rare washing of hair of the head.

Small children also suffer from the appearance of a rash, although most of them are kept in ideal clean conditions. In newborn babies, the cause of acne can be a bad diet for a nursing mother. Children older, preschool or younger school age, suffer from allergies to certain products or even toys, if they are made of low-quality materials. Parents need to carefully pay attention to any changes in the skin of the child, especially for rashes in infants.

In adolescence

In girls, adolescents who have reached adolescence, the appearance of acne is the main problem that is visible to the naked eye. Hormonal surges give a rash on the face, on the temples, on the back of the head, accompanied by itching and hypersensitivity. Strengthened work of the sebaceous glands clogs the space near the hair follicles, causes inflammation. As a result, red or purulent acne appears.

With a nuisance in the form of rashes meets anyone, regardless of age group. Acne on the head, different in appearance, has its own distinctive features, which are worth a little more detail. At the first signs that there are acne on the head, you need to pay attention to them and prevent the spread or complication of rash.

Closed comedones or, in a popular way, “prosyanka” arise when the sebaceous glands are blocked with dead skin particles secreted by fat, then. Under the created cork, bacteria begin to multiply actively, creating a white nodule. This phenomenon of rash often occurs in adolescents, but in adulthood it is possible to encounter seals on the skin, which periodically can itch.

Red acne

When small red spots appear on the skin, it is rarely a concern. Inflammation develops in waves, then increasing, then calming down. When exacerbation in the center of the red pimple papules appears white purulent tubercle with a seal under the skin. Wrong metabolism of the body, diseases of the gastrointestinal tract are the main causes of the rash of red acne.

Black eels

The open comedo has a black head, in its structure and cause of appearance is very similar with white pimple, but is located in the upper part of the pore. Clogged with a layer of excreted fat, epithelium residues, pore or hair bulb fills with a white-yellow substance, which, upon oxidation under the influence of oxygen, darkens and becomes a black dot. As long as the infection with black eels does not hit the site, they do not cause any trouble except for the external unsightly appearance.

Purulent rash

Rash containing pus, not only look unpleasant, but also very painful. Deep acne can have a compacted cystic base, then the color has a bluish tint. Red pustules contain a purulent bulb inside. The cause of purulent rashes is the use of steroids, hormonal failure or infection in the pores of the skin. Determine the source of the problem can only qualified physician after the examination.

Subcutaneous painful nodules

The connective tissue (dermis), located between the hypodermis and the epidermis, contains sweat and sebaceous glands, which, when blocked, form dense nodules that are painful to the touch. When bacteria enter the connective tissue, inflammation increases. The large size of pimples on the head suggests that the subcutaneous follicle has already burst and some amount has fallen into the dermis layer. If the scalp on the top of the head hurts, check if a new pimple has started to form there.

Acne is a skin disease associated with the work of the sebaceous glands and hair follicles, which usually manifests itself on the face, but can also be observed on the scalp, under the hair (on the crown and on the nape), on the chest, on the back. neck and other parts of the body. This disorder is especially common during adolescence, but sometimes occurs later in adulthood.

Why do acne appear on men’s heads?

The process of acne on the head is about the same as in other parts of the body. The sebaceous glands are located deep in the skin, the sebum secreted by them, penetrates the follicles, reaching the surface of the skin and moisturizing it. This is a normal phenomenon that is necessary for the proper functioning of the skin. But sometimes this process is disrupted, which causes acne on the skin and under the hair. The causes of acne can vary from hygiene to hormonal and internal disorders. They also vary by age group.

What causes acne on the head in men?

The main causes that may contribute to scalp acne are:

  • hormones, especially in adolescence or endocrine disorders,
  • stress,
  • hot, humid climatic conditions,
  • environmental factors such as pollution,
  • exposure to certain chemicals and oils,
  • drugs such as corticosteroids, lithium and estrogen or androgens containing drugs,
  • oily scalp
  • dairy products (because they affect hormone levels)
  • HIV and lupus can cause acne on the back of the head,
  • long hair,
  • friction or pressure, for example, from a helmet, helmet, headgear,
  • hair products such as oils, conditioners and gels can cause blockage in the pores,
  • genetic predisposition
  • fatty foods, chocolate and nuts do not cause acne (a rash can occur only if you are allergic to these products).

How are acne formed? Usually they develop with a combination of three factors:

  1. Overproduction of sebum by sebaceous glands.
  2. Clogged skin pores.
  3. An increase in the number of bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes) that can cause inflammation.

  1. Acne can be caused by internal problems and immune disorders, such as impaired liver function or after the use of antibiotics.
  2. The appearance of acne and acne on the scalp in men may be due to mechanical factors: a hard hat or the habit of scratching and combing the skin.
  3. Another cause of this skin defect can be stress, fatigue and depression.
  4. Any type of allergy can trigger a rash, make sure that you do not have allergies and irritation on newly acquired cosmetics.
  5. Among the everyday causes of acne on the head in men can be mentioned the lack of personal hygiene or its excess. Pay attention to your shampoo and other hair care products. If your hair is greasy or you frequently use styling products, you should wash your hair daily to prevent blockage of the sebaceous glands.
  6. The cause of acne can be disorders that have arisen against the background of various pathologies, in particular, endocrine problems. Acne can also be caused by the use of steroids, which are often prescribed against autoimmune diseases.
  7. For boys, teenagers and guys, who in this case are a high-risk group, the appearance of a rash on different parts of the body is associated with the onset of puberty. At this age, the activity of the sebaceous glands is particularly increased. For this reason, acne occurs not only on the scalp, but also on other parts of the body (face, back, chest). Clogged pores cause reproduction of pathogenic microflora inside the hair follicles, which leads to inflamed pimples on the scalp. As a rule, teenage acne disappears completely by the age of 18-20.
  8. Do not forget that acne can be a sign of the onset of a disease, such as chickenpox, and in this case, urgent medical intervention is required. The correct diagnosis can only be made by a specialist, so consult a doctor immediately.
  9. For young children, the most common cause of a rash is an allergic reaction to a new food product, care products such as shampoos, animal dander, pollen, household items, medicines, clothes that a child wears, and toys.
  10. Infants also suffer from a rash, including on the scalp, even though they are kept under practically sterile conditions. In this case, the cause may be the wrong diet of nursing mothers.

When follicles are clogged up against the surface of the skin, acne can develop. Deeper blockage leads to pustules, nodules and cysts (under the skin).

Below are several factors that contribute to the formation of acne on the head in men. All these causes affect the formation of acne, either by increasing the production of sebum, or by clogging hair follicles, and, therefore, attract bacteria that cause inflammation.

  1. Overproduction of sebum

Sebum plays a large role in the formation of acne, when its production increases, the chances of clogging of the pores also increase. There are several factors that can increase the production of sebum in men, including hormones, genetics, and medication.

If a man suffers from inflamed acne on the scalp, it can be a sign of folliculitis caused by damage to the hair follicle by mites, bacteria or fungi. It is more common among men with oily scalp and oily hair. In severe cases, boils may appear, which later lead to scars.

  1. Pimples on men’s head after shaving

Shaving hair on the head often leads to acne, especially when the vegetation is shaved in the wrong direction or using blunt tools. In this case, ingrown hairs will form, which will form inflammation and acne on the bald head in men.

  1. Eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis also cause scalp acne.

Eczema and psoriasis are skin diseases that manifest as inflamed acne. In eczema, in particular, dry, itchy skin is observed on the head due to dandruff. Герпетиформный дерматит (Herpetiformis) также может вызывать небольшие прыщи на коже головы у мужчин. В этом случае они могут распространяться на другие участки, например, локти, колени, спину, плечи.

Process base physiology

For a start, we will deal with you, whence this problem appears, on what basis it arises, what reasons, cause acne.

As you know, our skin of the head consists of three layers.

Epidermis - the upper layer, where there is a constant cell renewal.

Dermis - the middle layer, where are interrelated systems:

  • Capillaries,
  • Nerve endings
  • Vessels
  • Sebaceous and sweat glands,
  • Hair follicle.

Hypodermis - the deepest layer that provides thermoregulation of the entire skin, where nutrients accumulate.

Functions between these layers are distributed as follows.

Located in the middle layers of the skin, sebaceous and sweat glands create a special lipid film. Her task:

  • Provide the skin with optimum moisture levels,
  • Protect it from microorganisms and bacteria that seek to penetrate inside.

In case of rupture of this film, pathogenic microbes open directly to the inner layers of the skin, where inflammation begins to appear with subsequent pustular manifestations on the epidermis.

The reasons for the development of this pathology lie in the internal and external factors, which we consider in more detail.

Internal problems

Often, inflammation of the scalp is associated with hyperactivity of the sebaceous glands at the hormonal level in:

  • Adolescents due to puberty,
  • Women due to menstrual cycles, polycystic ovarian disease or pregnancy,
  • Men due to changes in the quantitative level of testosterone.

To these reasons, you can add malfunctions in the work of the internal organs as well as in women and men, due to constant nervous stress or impaired functioning of the immune system.

External factors

External causes of acne in people’s head are often associated with:

  • Medication, synthetic hormones, barbiturates or halogen containing agents,
  • Malnutrition focusing on sweet food or whole cow's milk,
  • Vitamin deficiency
  • Non-compliance with the rules of hygiene,
  • Frequent shampooing,
  • Allergic reactions to shampoos, paints or cosmetics,
  • Bad habits in men, women or teenagers
  • Synthetic pillows, linen or hairbrushes,
  • The influence of environmental conditions,
  • Exposure to low or high temperatures.

External manifestations of rash

The first symptoms of acne on the head is a banal itch.

Then this unpleasant phenomenon expands with additional signs in the form of formation of small pink or red protuberances that rise above the skin, varying in size from millimeter to centimeter.

However, these formations itch, causing:

  • Soreness on touch,
  • Feeling of skin tightness
  • Inflammatory irritations.

In the process of ripening, cavities filled with pus form on the surface of these eruptions.

After about a week, a thin film of acne breaks through, and its contents flow to the surface of the epidermis.

It dries, tightening the skin, which itches, and, clogging the follicles, causes the person to involuntarily destroy the formed crust, sometimes with dirty hands.

This opens an additional gate for infection.

Favorite localization of acne is often determined by:

  • In men, the border between the neck, the hair, the nape,
  • In women in the parting area,
  • In adolescents and children throughout the scalp, or in the area of the temples and the top of the forehead.

Such symptoms can be caused by comedones or traditional acne of an inflammatory nature.
