How much joy our favorite pets give us! Your gentle fluffy (or smooth-haired) four-legged friend meets you from work, purring with happiness that he waited for his beloved master, and in the evening he tries to get on his knees and watch TV with you. Idyll.

And suddenly you notice that the cat is coughing. Is your pet sick? The first thought that comes to your mind is that he has a cold or choked on something. Subconsciously, you begin to build an associative parallel between yourself and your four-legged friend. And this is not worth doing. The fact is that cough (as a physiological act) is very similar in almost all mammals, but the reasons for it are different in humans and animals.

Moreover, a cat's cough can be a symptom of a rather serious cardiovascular or respiratory diseases, respiratory diseases, a sign of an acute infection.

What is a cough?

In cats, it is a reflex, involuntary, jerky, resounding exhalation. Cough comes from a cough center located in the medulla. It receives a signal on the vagus nerve from sensitive receptors. Their greatest number is in the area of the vocal cords, larynx, as well as in the areas of division of the bronchi and trachea. Places where cough receptors accumulate are called reflexogenic zones (cough).

It should be borne in mind that cough is primarily a protective reflex that occurs in the body of an animal as a result of chemical or mechanical irritation of sensitive areas. In many diseases, it helps to more effectively evacuate pus, mucus, foreign particles from the airways, thereby contributing to the speedy recovery of the animal.

A feature of the cough zones that are in the bronchi and trachea is that they almost equally respond to irritation that comes from the respiratory lumen or outside. Therefore, cough is considered a symptom of the disease as the respiratory tract, and the tissues and organs surrounding them. In this regard, the reasons why the cat sneezes and coughs can be very much.

Causes causing cough

Veterinarians believe that this symptom may indicate at least a hundred diseases. Naturally, we will not be able to tell about all, but we will describe the most common ones.

About this disease should be said first of all, because cats, like people, suffer from them quite often. The symptoms to which the pet owner should pay attention include the following:

  1. The cat coughs.
  2. The animal has shortness of breath.

The age of the cat in this case is of particular importance. Most often, this formidable disease develops in an animal older than two years. Initially, seizures are rare, but over time are repeated more and more often. The general condition of the cat is deteriorating - after a short time he may stop responding to everything that happens around him. The disease requires immediate initiation of therapy. The causes of this disease in animals have not yet been fully identified. In some cats, the disease can be provoked by allergies, others are inherited, at the genetic level.

Do not be surprised, but this disease, which affects millions of people around the world, has not bypassed our younger brothers. Have you noticed that yard cats sometimes cough? As a rule, it is a reaction to pollen. Although more often in this case, they sneeze. If you notice that pedigree kittens react in this way, immediately show the babies to the veterinarian. If the diagnosis is confirmed, your pets will be prescribed the necessary drugs.

The cat coughs and in the presence of helminthic diseases. Usually our pets become infected with helminths that parasitize their gastrointestinal tract. But if your pet walks on the street, then yard cats can become the cause of the disease. If you do not carry out periodic deworming, then after a short time, the parasites become so many that, without being placed in the intestine, they move to the stomach, and from there with vomit enter the external environment.

In this case, the immunity of the animal weakens. A cough with this disease causes irritation of the esophagus receptors (due to vomiting).

Foreign object

Animals are very curious, and if there are small objects (beads, buttons, etc.) in the places accessible to them, your pet may be seriously injured. This often sin pedigree kittens that are just beginning to learn the world. As a result of getting a foreign object into the airways, the cat coughs.

If you believe that the animal suffers for this very reason, do not try to get the object on your own - without a special tool and experience, you will only harm the animal. In such a situation, urgent veterinary care is needed.

Types and types of cough in animals

Coughing is a reflex that is vital to any animal. With it, different areas of the respiratory system protect themselves. They are trying to get rid of dangerous and destructive factors:

  • Throat - when stuck various items.
  • Larynx - with edema and inflammatory processes.
  • Trachea, lungs and bronchi - when foreign bodies, particles, as well as inflammation and other pathologies developing in them.

Sometimes a cough in animals occurs against the background of heart disease, it can also be caused by various parasites that have infected the body.

Depending on the reasons provoking it, the symptom is of different types and types:

  • Acute.
  • Chronic.
  • Dry.
  • Wet.
  • Hoarse.
  • Whistling.
  • Periodic.
  • Constant.
  • Quiet.
  • Loud.

When animals cough, excretion from the mouth in the form of sputum of a different type can be observed. The mucus that accompanies forced expiration may be:

In some cases, a cough in an animal can be a single occurrence. If with the help of sharp forced expirations the pet gets rid of the discomfort and then feels fine, it is not dangerous. If reflex acts continue for quite a long time, then this signals the possibility of the presence of serious pathologies in the body.

Animal Cough Encyclopedia

Our site helps to find answers to many of the troubling questions associated with coughing in animals. Useful information provides an opportunity to learn more about the factors and causes of sharp forced expirations in animals of various types (pigs, parrots, cats, dogs). After all, they often act as a symptom of the most dangerous diseases. It is very important to familiarize yourself with the effects of cough in animals. Having the necessary information, pet owners will be able to avoid many of the risk factors that contribute to the occurrence of the disease, and in case of its occurrence, recognize the danger in a timely manner, as well as provide first aid to their pet.

Heart diseases

Perhaps you have heard of the so-called "heart" cough in humans. Similarly, it can occur in animals. The cause of it can be heart disease, in particular, malfunctioning of the heart valves. In this pathology, the heart muscle increases in volume and presses on the trachea, which is located very close to it. Because of this, the cat coughs, and the intensity of the attack gradually increases. At the same time no rattling is heard.

How does cough develop?

Why, in general, does a cough arise? This is a kind of defense mechanism of the body, which occurs as a reaction to various stimuli. In the medulla oblongata of dogs and cats there is a cough center, which connects with the vagus nerve to the cough receptors, and most of them are concentrated in the area of the vocal cords and larynx (the areas of their accumulations are called reflexogenic zones).

When the reflex zones are irritated, the vagus nerve sends a signal to the cough center, which provokes a spasm of the muscles of the lungs. Irritants can also be present in the environment or inside the pet. So, coughing can occur due to mucus, foreign objects, sputum, dust in the bronchi.

Cough Features

Unlike dogs, cats have a cough much less frequently. Often with one disease in dogs, it progresses, and purring beauties appear difficulty breathing, shortness of breath. In addition, they have these symptoms to notice and even more difficult to recognize.

It is all about the cat's instinct of self-preservation - animals intuitively avoid factors provoking cough in various diseases: they do not play, move much less, do not show unnecessary emotions, get settled in a well ventilated place, where nobody and nothing bothers them.

In itself, this unusual behavior can be regarded as the beginning of a disease. Have you noticed this for your pet? If possible, consult with a specialist.

Cough Types

Doctors distinguish the following types of cough:

  • by duration - acute (from two days to a month) and chronic (from several months),
  • in intensity (from coughing to harassing),
  • by sound - muffled or voiced,
  • the nature of the discharge - wet with mucus or dry,
  • by the time of attack.

Observe the nature of the cough in your pet. Your description of the seizures will help the doctor more accurately diagnose the causes of the disease.

Cat diseases: symptoms and treatment

And back to bronchial asthma. A sick cat may have sudden, mild or rather strong coughing attacks. The animal breathes heavily, it is hampered by the passage of air. Usually with this disease the cat coughs and wheezes. Often with asthma, there is frequent sneezing.

Stress, air pollution, weather changes can affect the development of the disease. Bronchial asthma in the initial stages is more often observed in young animals (up to three years), as a rule, representatives of the Himalayan and Siamese breeds are subject to it. Attacks are increasing in spring and autumn, which is typical of most allergic ailments.

This diagnosis is made on the basis of a clinical examination of the animal - laboratory tests and radiography. The treatment is long and, as a rule, consists in the prescription of corticosteroids and bronchodilator drugs prescribed in the form of injections or tablets.

Viral rhinotracheitis

It is an infectious disease that causes convulsive and frequent bouts of coughing. For him, the age of the cat does not matter. In severe illness, the animal sneezes and coughs. His eyes are watering. The disease may be accompanied by a runny nose and diarrhea. All these symptoms are similar to the clinical picture of human flu. But this does not mean that the cat caught a cold. In this case, the treatment is difficult and takes time. Therefore, timely vaccination is necessary as a preventive measure.

Cough after getting “combat” wounds

If you have not yet an old cat who likes to sort things out with his fellows, then suddenly he may begin to cough. This can occur due to direct damage to the trachea from a bite received during a fight with the enemy. Such injuries provoke not only a cough: the animal often sneezes and even refuses to eat, as the passage of food brings pain.

In this case, help is in treating the injury to avoid suppuration of the wound.

Worms cough

Worms are often the reason that the cat coughs. Animals of any age are subject to this disease - both an adult individual and only born pedigree kittens. Moreover, pets who have never left their homes and who are not in contact with other animals can pick it up: you can easily bring parasites from the street (on shoes, for example). In this disease, the sick cat coughs, pulling the neck. Often the attack is accompanied by vomiting.

Cough in this case is short, moderate. Similar symptoms can occur in animals with infectious diseases of the lungs and bronchi, as well as toxoplasmosis. Therefore, accurate diagnosis is needed, based on the results of analyzes that are aimed at the detection of parasite eggs. Treatment in this case is reduced to the usual procedures for deworming.

Antitussive drugs

To stop a cough and / or change its nature (remove dry and cause wet), there are many drugs. Conventionally, they are divided into two groups. The first part includes drugs that block this reflex, affect the cough center, regardless of its nature. They are called antitussive agents of central action. Prescribes such drugs only a doctor. They are usually included in the complex therapy. This is primarily due to the fact that in most cases they only remove the symptoms of the disease, but do not eliminate the cause of its occurrence. As a result, an illusion of recovery may be created, and in fact the ailment will progress. In addition, antitussive drugs are potent drugs, and if used improperly, they can harm the animal.

The second group is expectorants. They do not stop the cough, but they significantly ease dry, increasing the volume of secreted mucus and diluting it. Along with it, the causative agents of the disease are removed from the body. These drugs are used to treat infectious cough.

In pharmacies for people sold a lot of combined medicines - and expectorant, and antitussive. However, not all of them are suitable for your pet. Moreover, some products are strictly contraindicated in animals.

If you are sure that your cat is coughing and sneezing because it has caught a cold and you do not have the opportunity to visit the vet, you can buy it at the pharmacy Amoxiclav or another antibiotic of this group (for cats). It can be presented in the form of tablets and powders from which the suspension is prepared. More often it is the liquid form that is more effective.

It is necessary to choose the smallest dosage and pour the powder with water. Give this drug to an animal three times a day, 2.5 ml. The course of treatment is not more than seven days.

And some more tips

Prior to treatment, it is necessary to accurately identify the cause of the disease. Do not forget that coughing in many cases is a defensive reaction of the animal, it can be beneficial, speeding recovery. In other words, it is often not necessary to fight it to a complete victory with the help of antitussives. The only exception may be a dry, exhausting cough, which causes anxiety and worsening of the general condition of the animal. In this case, consult a specialist.

The immune system of cats (as well as many other predators, by the way) focuses on potent antibacterial immunity. This is due to the fact that in the struggle for territory or during a hunt, the wild ancestors of our beloved pets often received infected wounds and injuries. Without a strong immune defense against various bacteria, no animal can survive in the wild.

Bacterial infections of the nasopharynx (including respiratory cough) in cats are much less common than in humans and dogs. They can develop only against the background of a strong weakening of the immune system. Therefore, the conventional concept of "cold" for cats is not typical, although, of course, there are exceptions.

Feline cough: causes and types

A sharp release of air from the lungs is a reflex - a protective reaction to external stimuli, and symptomatic - accompanying some underlying disease. Those. This is not a separate disease, it is always a sign of something more serious.

Reflex cough spasm occurs in the following cases:

  • the presence of foreign bodies in the respiratory tract or esophagus (the cough will continue until the foreign object is removed or coughed up),
  • Changes in the inhaled air: caustic gases, smoke, any sharp-smelling substances or fine powders (flour, mustard powder, peppers, etc.).

  • respiratory diseases provoked by viruses or bacteria (pneumonia, laryngotracheitis, bronchitis, etc.),
  • allergies in the form of bronchial asthma,
  • diseases of the heart and vascular system (cardiac or heart cough),
  • helminthic invasions (parasites affecting the lungs or the gastrointestinal tract with their vital activity provoke cough),
  • neck or chest injuries with damage to the lungs or trachea, as well as internal injuries and scratches of the throat,
  • cancer pathologies of the respiratory system and neoplasm,
  • accumulation of fluid or air in the chest cavity
  • diaphragmatic hernia (through which the abdominal organs enter the chest cavity, causing irritation).

Symptoms of the main types of cat cough

Having noticed that the cat is coughing, it is important to look closely at the nature of the cough and the accompanying symptoms in order to provide a correct description of the pet's condition to the veterinarian.

Respiratory cough

Accompanying some viral and microbial infections of the lower respiratory tract and the common cold. During illnesses, the cat usually coughs and sneezes, nasal discharge occurs, and an increase in overall temperature is possible. A tussle at first is sonorous and dry, which eventually turns into a dull and purulent sputum.

Cardiac cough

It arises from the fact that the hypertrophied (greatly enlarged) heart or its individual chambers put pressure on the trachea, from where the impulse about irritation comes to the brain, and a cough reflex occurs. The intensity of cough increases slowly over time, as the heart grows larger. The process is like a cat choking and trying to get rid of something, cough up it. There is no sputum, no foreign objects are detected. Day after day, cough does not change its manifestation.

Invasive cough is caused by irritable activity of gastric or pulmonary parasitic worms. Usually with this pathology, the cat coughs and wheezes. More precisely, outwardly the animal takes a pose, as during coughing, the tongue protrudes, the process begins with a hoarse, sharp exhalation, then turns into a cough, sometimes with vomiting. Usually comes white foam or parasites in the stomach. Usually, the owners at this moment can not understand for sure that with a pet is a cough or wheezing, or all together. Therefore, often when describing a symptom, the phrase “a cat as if coughing” sounds. At the same time, weight loss and loss of appetite can be observed.

Traumatic cough

Appears after internal or external injuries of the respiratory system - for example, after eating bones (usually fish or chicken) or external injuries after street fights or falls from a height. In case of internal non-through injuries (or scratches), periodic single coughs are observed, usually observed during eating or drinking. With severe injuries, external anxiety, meowing and refusal to eat after the first attempts to eat are possible. When external injuries can be observed forced (fast and deep) breath at the time of swallowing food and found injuries in the neck or chest.

How to understand that a cat is not just coughing, but choking?

A cat's cough "seemed to choke" and really choked - radically different concepts. First you need to decide what is meant by the second case. This means that a foreign object is stuck in an animal in the pharynx or esophagus, which cannot pass into the stomach on its own, and is not removed from the mouth by the animal itself. To confuse this condition with a regular cough is simply impossible!

When not just a cough, and the cat choked:

  • the state does not arise from nowhere, it is usually preceded by eating or playing with small objects,
  • the animal does not have time to take the "cough" pose "
  • cough itself is absent, wheezing, "phekanya" and increasing emetic urges are present,
  • the cat rubs its face with its paw, as if trying to independently extract what it choked (an important clinical symptom),
  • salivation increases, which begins to flow from the mouth due to the inability to swallow it.

Watching a similar picture, you can be absolutely sure that the cat choked!

There are two options for help:

  • open the cat's mouth and independently remove the foreign object with which the animal choked, if it has access,
  • if nothing is visible to the outsider, but the cat choked on signs, you should immediately go to the veterinary clinic.

Diagnostics

Cough is a symptom of deviations in the health of the pet, and not a separate disease. It is very important to correctly diagnose and find out the cause of coughing. This can only be done by a veterinary specialist, since there are more than 50 types of diseases associated with this clinic.

Diagnosis of diseases involving cough spasm is a laborious and sometimes quite long process. Often, before finding out the exact cause, the cat will be given symptomatic medications to simply alleviate the condition.

For a veterinarian diagnosis:

  • collects anamnesis by conducting a detailed survey of the patient’s owner,
  • examines the animal as a whole, and also pays special attention to the upper and lower respiratory tract, conducts auscultation of the lungs and trachea (listens for the presence of wheezing and noise),
  • listens to the work of the heart
  • if necessary, makes an x-ray and takes blood for analyzes,
  • in case of suspicion on the pathology of individual respiratory organs, prescribe radiopaque studies,
  • sows secretions from the pharynx or phlegm in order to identify a potential pathogen of the inflammatory process and determine their resistance to various antibiotics and antimicrobials,
  • if you suspect oncology, a biopsy of the organ where the lesion is suspected is done,
  • in certain clinical cases, it is possible to appoint additional consultations with a veterinary cardiologist, oncologist, surgeon and allergist.

If the cat coughs - how to treat and how to help?

The owner himself can only help with reflex spastic coughing, eliminating changes in inhaled air. It is enough to stop the impact of extraneous gas and fine impurities on the cat's respiratory organs, and to ensure the flow of fresh air.

If there is a foreign object in the airway, the nature of the cough must be noted: if the cat can breathe in and cough actively, you can hope that the foreign element will be removed on its own. If the cough goes on wheezing, breathing is difficult, the activity of the animal falls - you should immediately take him to the hospital for medical help.

In all other cases, when a cat has a cough that does not belong to the reflex category, the animal must be shown to a veterinarian.

Before visiting the veterinary clinic, you must:

  • provide the cat with fresh air
  • normalize the humidity in the room where the pet is located, using a humidifier, wet towel on batteries or a banal spraying around the air with water from the sprayer,
  • it is forbidden to independently, whatever it is to prescribe and give the cat from drugs, because the clinical picture will be blurred, making it difficult to make a correct diagnosis. Uncontrolled intake of medications can aggravate a pet's condition,
  • protect from hypothermia.

The meaning of any medical procedures in relation to cough is the elimination of the cause that caused it.

What can arise?

Causes of cough can be varied:

  • Allergic reactions develop as a result of contact of the pet with pollen, dust, some products, components of floor cleaning products used for washing the floor, particles of laundry detergent with which clothes were washed. In this case, the dog may begin to sneeze and cough.
  • Ingestion of foreign objects into the lungs, for example, pieces of food, will also trigger a protective cough reflex.
  • A hungry cat or dog can simply choke on food during its fast and erratic use.
  • Both cats and dogs can develop bronchial asthma, which is accompanied by paroxysmal cough, shortness of breath, episodes of suffocation, and respiratory disorders.
  • Surprisingly, such a symptom may signal parasitic invasions. Worms and their larvae from the intestines, in which they most often live, can get into the stomach, causing vomiting and irritation of the pharynx, which is often accompanied by coughing. And some parasites inhabit the lungs.
  • Contact with the lungs and the accumulation of fluid in them, for example, after water procedures or careless drinking.
  • Viral and bacterial infections of the respiratory tract, the same as adenoviroz. Cough in this case occurs due to irritation of the mucous membranes of the bronchi and trachea by pathogenic organisms and their metabolic products.
  • Infectious tracheobronchitis is often referred to as nursery cough, as it is infectious and is transmitted from sick or convalescent animals to healthy ones and quickly spreads in places of their accumulation. With this disease, there is a dry and strong cough, accompanied by other signs: weakness, fever, enlarged tonsils, swelling of the throat.
  • Chest injuries provoke damage to the respiratory tract and cause the symptom in question.
  • Hysterical cough accompanied by pneumonia - pneumonia.
  • Features of some breeds, such as a short neck and a flattened muzzle. In this case, the upper respiratory tract is significantly shortened, so various stimuli penetrate them easily and often.
  • A rarer cause of cough in domestic animals are diseases of the cardiovascular system, accompanied by a dysfunction of the valves. The blood does not leave the ventricles completely, and they begin to squeeze the trachea located nearby, irritating the reflex zones.
  • Tumors are more common in older pets.

Setting the correct diagnosis

To find out why a cat is coughing, it is necessary to determine which diseases can cause such a symptom. You cannot do it yourself, you need to show your pet to the veterinarian as soon as possible. The specialist will conduct a primary examination, assess the respiratory function with a phonendoscope. Also, blood tests, feces and diagnostic tests will be assigned: chest x-ray, heart ultrasound, respiratory endoscopy.

Cough treatment

What if a cat or dog coughs? Do not expect that the symptom will disappear by itself, do not try to treat your pet with folk remedies. Immediately take him to a veterinary clinic and try to remember what preceded the appearance of a symptom, for example, contact with other animals, falling or colliding.

Treatment of cough will depend directly on its causes. Actions may be as follows:

  1. If allergies are prescribed antihistamines. You should also stop any contact with potential allergens.
  2. If bronchial asthma is the cause of the cough, then the veterinarian recommends glucocorticosteroids and bronchodilators.
  3. For viral infections, therapy is carried out with the help of antiviral agents, and for bacterial infections, the use of antibiotics is advisable.
  4. When helminthic invasions should be given pet antiparasitic drug. Its dose is calculated taking into account the weight and age of the animal.
  5. If foreign objects get into the airways, surgery may be necessary to remove them.
  6. For respiratory diseases involving cough, mucolytics, bronchodilators, antitussives can be used. The drug should be selected by the doctor after the examination, taking into account the characteristics of the symptom and the disease that caused it.
  7. If the cat or dog choked or choked, just let it cough.

Now you know what to do if your pet has a cough, you can help him and eliminate such an unpleasant symptom.

Let's sum up

If you want your pet to be healthy (and almost all pet owners want this), then, having noticed that the cat is coughing, watch him for a day (of course, if there are no signs of suffocation), then go to the veterinary clinic. Do not self-medicate: it is just as dangerous for animals as it is for people. Spend all the necessary vaccinations and regularly clean the animal's body from worms. Only in this case, your affectionate pet will be healthy, and you are happy.

Causes of Cat Cough

Cough can be caused by several factors. On the one hand, a cough in a pussy is a protective reaction of the animal’s body to external chemical or physical stimuli. On the other hand, coughing is a symptom characteristic of certain diseases.

Considering the cough as a reflex defense reaction, we can say that it can manifest itself in the following cases:

  1. Exposure to acrid smoke — tobacco, asphyxiating gas, or smoke that has arisen as a result of burning plastic, when evaporated sharply smelling or chemical toxic substances.
  2. Foreign bodies (bones, hairpins, small toys, balls) that got there during outdoor games or feeding trapped in the pharynx, esophagus or in the airways. At the same time, the cat will by all means try to cough up the extra object out of itself.
  3. Simple dust or other fine substances that are suspended in the air (ground pepper, flour, mustard powder) can cause some scratchy or unpleasant irritation in the throat.

As a symptom, a cat's cough manifests itself in the following diseases:

  1. Various respiratory diseases (tracheitis, laryngitis, bronchitis, or pneumonia) that are caused by microbes or viruses.
  2. Cardiovascular diseases.
  3. Allergic reactions, manifested in the form of bronchial asthma.
  4. Invasive diseases (the presence of worms). In this case, the cat will cough during the migration of larvae - when they through the bloodstream enter the bronchi and lungs.

So, a cat's cough is not a separate ailment, but a serious symptom of a certain disease or the result of external irritating factors on an animal's body.

Home treatment

How to treat a coughing and hoarse cat, the veterinarian knows best. The treatment methods chosen will depend directly on the reasons that gave rise to the pathological phenomenon.

If the owner of the mustache is known for the exact reason for the cat's cough, then he can show some autonomy by trying to help the cat.

Deliver him from foreign objects.

First of all, check the pet's mouth and tongue. A ball of wool or a small foreign object can easily get into the mouth. For the correct opening of the mouth, enter your fingers into it (in the area of the corners where there are no teeth).

Try to push the jaws very carefully, taking special care. Having found a foreign object, also try to gently, without hitting the oral mucosa, pull it out.

Lack of moisture or allergic reaction

If you didn’t find anything in the mouth of the pussy, and the cat doesn’t stop sneezing, coughing, pulling the neck to the floor, then consider whether your pet is allergic to the new substance in the house.

It should be borne in mind that allergies can occur not only during the absorption of something, but also during inhalation. If a new item makes you suspicious, temporarily remove it from home. Because of this, you can either refute the theory of the development of allergies in a cat, or confirm it.

What else can be done if the pet does not stop coughing? In some cases, the cat may simply suffer from a lack of moisture. For comfortable breathing fluff try using air humidifiers. A simplified version of the humidifier is a regular wet towel placed on a running battery.

Rid the pussy of worms

According to the above, one of the possible causes of a cat's cough is worms. If you haven’t paid attention to this for a year, then you must get the drugs specially intended for this at the pharmacy, using them strictly according to the instructions.

Bronchial asthma

Unexpected attacks, accompanied by heavy breathing and wheezing. The animal may cough up for a relatively long time without stopping. It is often seasonal. It is clearly becoming clear that the cat is breathing heavily. May be accompanied by sneezing and allergic reactions.

Oncological pathology

Cough in cancer of the respiratory system, as a rule, begins to manifest itself in terminal stages (the most recent). May be accompanied by soreness, hemoptysis, general weakness and depression.

The meaning of any medical procedures in relation to cough is the elimination of the cause that caused it.

Invasive cough

It is eliminated by the destruction of parasitic worms in the cat's body. It is well prevented by regular deworming.

Cardiac (heart) cough spasm

It is treated under the supervision of a physician with complex measures aimed primarily at stabilizing the work of the cardiovascular system. In parallel, antitussive drugs of central action are taken.

Respiratory cough

Eliminated by antiviral and antibacterial drugs with the addition of expectorant or antitussive agents. The nature of the drugs will depend on the cough itself - when a cough is wet, no antitussive drugs are prescribed and, conversely, a dry cough is not always eliminated by expectorant drugs (unless it is necessary to turn it into productive).

Bronchial asthma

Asthma therapy accompanies a pet for life. In therapeutic schemes necessarily include antihistamines, hormonal and glucocorticosteroids. Sometimes there is a need for bronchodilators - bronchial dilating agents. Usually, exacerbation of asthma is seasonal, so all the necessary drugs to alleviate the condition of the cat should be in the first-aid kit at the ready.

Trichobezoar

Periodic single intensive cough spasm, almost always reaching vomiting. The cat is coughing as if choking. As a result of such a cough, lumps of wool come out through the mouth.

Trichobezoar

Cough from irritation of the mucous membranes of the stomach and trachea swallowed wool can be eliminated with the help of special pastes or feed that envelop woolen clumps (Trichobezoar), reduce irritation and remove them naturally. Reception of any antitussive drugs is not provided.

A few words about antitussive drugs.

Any cough medicine must be prescribed by a strictly veterinary specialist in dosages prescribed for cats, depending on the weight of the animal, age, general condition and name of the disease.

Conditionally cough medicines are divided into two categories:

  • cough suppressants of central action - eliminate any cough reflex, regardless of the reason that caused it,
  • expectorant (mucolytic) drugs - do not directly eliminate the cough, but change its character to productive due to an increase in sputum discharge (increase in its amount and liquefaction). In the process of productive cough, pathogens are removed from the body with sputum.

Drugs used in bronchial asthma

For attacks of bronchial asthma, drugs are prescribed to relieve spasm and enlarge the bronchi.

  • ephedrine (subcutaneously 0.01-0.03 g per animal at the time of the attack and then up to 2 times a day),
  • atropine (intramuscularly or subcutaneously at a dose of 0.022-0.044 mg / kg to relieve an attack),
  • teufillin (0.2-0.7 g 2-3 times a day with frequent cough attacks, 1-2 times with rare).

Expectorants

Mucolytics (diluting and improving sputum waste) often alleviate the condition of the animal, over time eliminating the cough itself.

  • ammonia and anisic drops (3-5 drops with water in a teaspoon at 2-3 p. / day),
  • tablets with thermopsis (0.025-0.5 g up to 3 times a day),
  • terpingidrata tablets (0.1 g three times a day),
  • Bromhexine (as an injection - once a day, 1 mg / kg, as a syrup - 0.5 ml / kg, tablets - 2 mg / kg once a day),
  • lobelon (0.1 ml / kg 2-3 times a day in a muscle or subcutaneously),
  • gedelix (0.5-1 ml per 1 animal up to 2 times a day).

Expectorant decoctions of herbs

In cats, it is also effective to use herbal decoctions and fees to translate cough into productive. Some herbs have not only a mucolytic effect, but also suppress the cough reflex directly.

  • 2 h. Deviacela + 1 h. Mother-and-stepmother + 1 h. Licorice + 1 h. Primrose. 1 tablespoon pour 200 ml boiling water and boil for 20-30 minutes over low heat. Strain. After cooling, drink 15-20 ml after meals up to 4 times a day.
  • 1 h. Plantain + 1 h. Primrose + 1 h. Mother and stepmother. 1 tbsp. Spoon collection in 200 ml of boiling water for 20 minutes. Drink 10-20 ml three times a day after meals.
  • 1 tbsp of dried plantain leaves insist for 30 minutes in a glass of boiling water and give 1 hour before meals 2-3 times a day.
  • 1 h. Oak ordinary + 2 h. Hypericum + 1 h. Helichrysum. 2 tbsp. spoon to insist in half a liter of boiling water for 15-25 minutes Give up to 10 ml of cooled infusion, regardless of the meal.
  • 2 h. Plantain + 1 h. Mother-and-stepmother + 1 h. Wild rosemary. 1.5 Art. spoon dry mix pour 1-1.5 Art. boiling water and insist no more than 15 minutes. Give a maximum of 10 ml of infusion without the garter to eat.

Preventive measures

Considering the reasons that provoke cough in cats, it is more effective to prevent it than to treat an already manifested pathology.

  • Regularly vaccinate the animal against viral respiratory diseases.
  • Timely treatment of worms and skin parasites, which can be carriers of parasitic worms.
  • To maintain satisfactory conditions of feeding and housing, minimizing the factors that reduce immunity.
  • To exclude from the diet bones of any origin, especially small ones.
