Shopaholism or uncollectibility?

Do not know how to allocate the budget? There are several reasons for this. Among us there are many who can not live a day without running through the shops. And there is such a temptation! Before going to the boutique, you didn’t know that you needed some blouses and pants, and you could easily manage without them. But they saw - and fell in love. We urgently get cash! But not enough, pay off credit card, not the first time.

A shopaholic apartment is like a museum. A pile of dishes that have never been used, mountains of cosmetics, the shelf life of which expires before the moment they decide to use it for its intended purpose, figurines, animal figurines, plush toys - the list goes on and on. Shopaholics are buying up everything that comes handy, for them things have no practical significance. Bought - glad. Did not buy - borrowed money and again ran shopping.

Tell yourself stop. It is today and now. Look around - why do you need all this? For the joy of a momentary questionable purchase? Imagine that by rejecting senseless spending, you can save for a couple of months for a vacation. But the rest will bring you much more positive emotions than the hundredth in a row lipstick.

But there are people who do not suffer from shopaholism, but they still don’t have enough money. Spend only on the essentials! Believe me, this is far from true. Start recording all your expenses and literally in a week with amazement you will understand that you have acquired nonsense, and have forgotten about utility payments ... Uncollectibility and negligence are the main enemies of the family budget.

The economy must be economical

So, you are determined to save. The main thing here is not to overdo it - eating exclusively oatmeal and walking in the winter and summer in the same trousers, collecting a pretty penny in a tight stocking, is an obvious overkill.

Where to begin? We master a new profession and begin to keep home accounting. Get a notebook where you will enter data daily. In a separate column, enter the income of all family members - salary, allowances, scholarships, dividends. Then immediately plan your expenses are mandatory, without which you can not do. For example, utilities, travel expenses, kindergarten or school fees, loan payments.

The rest is daily expenses, food, household needs. And already the amount that will remain at the very end will be spent on unforeseen expenses - medicines, urgent repairs, on entertainment, and also in a piggy bank, for example. By the way, about unforeseen expenses. Well, if you have a stash - unforeseen expenses are called because they are not planned, but they come. Try to save 10% from each salary to a separate account. For the budget is insignificant, and the benefits are obvious.

There is another option for the forgetful - special budget planners, who themselves will count and calculate everything. There are a lot of such programs on the Internet, you can download them to your computer or fill in online after registering on the site. For owners of iPhones and smartphones, there are convenient mobile versions of home accounting.

How to save: small tricks

Install meters for water, gas - utility payments will decrease. Banal, but the right advice - do not forget to turn off the light, disconnect from the network of charging from mobile phones - so you will save on electricity. Pay attention to the tariff plan of your cellular operator - maybe it is worth changing it to a more profitable one?

Second-hand and flea markets - yes, yes, and there is nothing wrong with that. Sometimes you can find absolutely luxurious things at a ridiculous price. If you are planning to buy a thing that you need for a short time, maybe, look at the website of free ads and buy with it? For example, a walker or highchair. This will significantly save the family budget.

Lunch break at work - colleagues go to a cafe, and you out of habit with them. And if you bring lunch from home, you will be able to have dinner at a restaurant every week with savings.

Of course, these recommendations will not allow you to get rich sharply, but by doing them you can get much more for the same money. And in conclusion, I want to note - often increasing revenues helps to reduce costs! Invest in yourself, in your education, learn - and you will certainly succeed.

1. Assign the principal for the money

You can keep a joint budget, you can - separate, when everyone manages their finances on their own, giving part of the money for common expenses. In any case, someone should manage this common money. The task of this person is to ensure that all bills are paid on time, and the money set aside for the reserve, did not go to any nonsense. Charge this to the most disciplined and responsible family member.

2. Set aside at least 10% of each paycheck.

Open a savings account and transfer money there immediately after you have received a salary. So you save yourself from the temptation to spend this money for other purposes.

For example, you get 30,000 rubles, and your partner - 40,000. Setting aside 10% of your salary, you will save up 84,000 rubles together in a year - this is not counting interest from the bank. Suddenly received a bonus - send it to your entire savings account.

3. Set goals

To save money is a bad idea. When you do not understand why to save money, then you certainly will not do this.

First you need to create a financial safety cushion - an amount equal to at least three of your salaries. It is useful if you suddenly have difficulty with work or someone from your family suddenly becomes ill. When the airbag is ready, you can start saving for a vacation, a car or a down payment on a mortgage.

4. Create a joint account

It is needed in order to collect there money for utilities, food or large purchases. This approach is convenient for controlling costs and for timely payment of bills. If there is one bill from which you have to pay, there will not be a situation where all family members thought that one of them had already paid for the apartment, but in fact no one did it at all. In addition, he will release you from mutual settlements: received a salary, chipped in a common pot, transferred 10% to the piggy bank account, and what's left is just yours.

5. Find out where your money is leaking.

Get into the habit of keeping track of how much money you spend. You can do this in the bank’s mobile application, if you pay more often with a card, or choose one of the services for financial planning. So you define the main items of expenditure and can understand what it would cost to spend less.

Watch out for small expenses - a large amount is accumulated from them. Imagine: you drove from work in a taxi for 300 rubles, because you did not want to wait for a minibus in the rain. For the same amount we had lunch in a cafe, because there was no time to cook something at home. And on the weekend they ordered two big pizzas for the whole family for fifteen hundred rubles, because they were lazy. In just a week, it was not clear where more than two thousand. Without these costs, you could easily manage.

Responsible attitude to money is a skill that can be mastered at any age. October 17, come to the free lecture "The Secret Life of the Family Budget: Planning and Optimization." Advisor to the Head of the Consumer Protection and Affordability of Financial Services of the Bank of Russia Alexander Kolankov and journalist Ksenia Paderina will tell you how to correctly manage the family budget and save money by planning expenses.

6. Make a financial plan

You probably already have a sample list of expenses for the near future. For example, by the New Year it would be nice to save 10,000 rubles for gifts. You have three months ahead, so in October, November and December you need to postpone approximately 3,300 rubles each. Do not count on the fact that the money somehow there will be. And if at the end of the year the boss becomes generous about the award, you can send it with a clear conscience to the piggy bank, because you already have money for gifts.

8. Calculate daily budget

Subtract obligatory payments from the total family income, food expenses (do you keep records of expenses?) And transport. The remaining money divided by the number of days in the month. It turns out the amount you can spend every day. If you could not resist and today let down more than planned, tomorrow will have to shrink costs.

2. Cook at home

So cheaper than going to a business lunch every day with a meal of dubious freshness. Make a stock of semi-finished products: cut the beef in a stew, rub the carrots for zazharki in the soup, boil the broth pan and pour it into containers. All this is perfectly stored in the freezer, and at the right time you just need to get it, defrost it and use it for its intended purpose.

Why do you need to keep a family budget

“Money is just a tool. They will lead you where you want, but they will not replace you as a driver, ”- Ain Rand, a writer of Russian origin who emigrated to the States, learned from her own experience the need for planning and budgeting her own finances.

Unpersuasive? Here is three good reasons start planning a family budget:

  1. The calculation of the family budget will help you figure out long-term goals and work in a given direction. If you drift aimlessly, throwing money on every attractive item, how can you save and take a long-awaited vacation, buy a car or make a down payment on a mortgage?
  2. Family budget table sheds light on spontaneous spending and makes you rethink purchasing habits. Do you really need 50 pairs of black high-heeled shoes? Planning a family budget makes you prioritize and reorient to achieve your goals.
  3. Illness, divorce, or job loss can lead to a serious financial crisis. Emergencies happen at the most inopportune moment. That is why everyone needs a reserve fund. The structure of the family budget necessarily includes the column "saving"- a financial pillow that will help keep afloat from three to six months.

How to distribute the family budget

A few practical rules for family planning, which we give here, can serve as a rough guide for decision-making. The situations of everyone are different and constantly changing, but the basic principles will serve as a good starting point.

Rule 50/20/30

Elizabeth and Amelia Warren, the authors of the book "All Your Worth: The Ultimate Lifetime Money Plan" (in translation "All your wealth: the main money plan for life") Describe a simple but effective way of budgeting.

Instead of splitting family expenses into 20 different categories, they recommend dividing the budget structure into three main components:

  • 50% of the income should cover major expenses such as housing, taxes and groceries,
  • 30% - optional spending: entertainment, going to a cafe, cinema, etc.,
  • 20% go to pay loans and debts, as well as deferred as a reserve.

80/20 rule

Variation of the previous rule. 20% of all income in the family budget to pay for arrears and the creation of a financial "cushion", 80% - everything else.

These rules of thumb can and should be corrected, adjusted to suit your actual situation. Below you will find an example of a family budget in the table, which will serve as the basis for drawing up your own plan.

Rule 3 - 6 months

You must have enough money on your hands or a deposit to live with your family for three to six months. In case of dismissal, accident or illness, "safety net»Will keep you from making desperate decisions, will give you the opportunity to look back and find ways out of these circumstances.

How to make a family budget

Planning the structure of expenses and incomes is not at all a difficult and tedious task, as you might have thought. There are free programs and apps to help you get started and stick to a plan.

  • Lined notebook and pen - the first thing that comes to mind when we think about how to calculate the family budget.
  • Download the family budget table in Excel You can download it in standard Microsoft templates and customize it for your own needs.
  • Applications for smartphones are a good option to immediately bring all payments into the program's memory, you just need to select the utility that suits you. Rubbish, Coinkeeper - convenient services for tracking and planning expenses.

We offer a step-by-step guide - how to create a family budget for the month based on a template in an Excel spreadsheet that you can adjust for yourself in a few clicks by downloading the document below.

Step 1: Set Goals

Saving for saving? Do not confuse stinginess and cost planning. Set goals and learn to save on the unimportant.

  • Short-term goal may be a new electronic device or repayment of minor debts.
  • In the medium term - buying a car, a long-awaited trip to interesting places.
  • Long-term goals typically include retirement plans, mortgage payments, and help for grown children.

Be realistic in the plans, take a pen and calculate your financial capabilities. Or download an Excel spreadsheet and use it as a guide.

Step 2: Determine the income and expenses of the family budget

It's time to look at the structure of the family budget. Start by compiling a list of all sources of income: wages, alimony, pensions, part-time jobs, and other options for getting money into the family.

Costs include everything you spend money on.

Divide spending on fixed and variable payments. Fill in the variable and fixed costs fields in the table for managing the family budget, based on your own experience. Detailed instructions for working with the excel file in the next chapter.

The distribution of the budget must take into account family size, housing conditions and the wishes of all members of the “cell of society”. A short list of categories is already included in the sample table. Consider the cost categories that will be needed for additional structure detailing.

Revenue structure

As a rule, in the income column fall:

  • the salary of the head of the family (labeled "husband"),
  • earnings of the main adviser ("wife"),
  • interest on deposits
  • pension,
  • social benefits
  • part-time work (private lessons, for example).

Expense graph

Expenses are divided into fixed, that is, constant: fixed payments for taxes, home insurance, car and health insurance, fixed amounts for Internet and TV. This also includes those 10–20%, which must be set aside for unforeseen cases and “rainy day”.

Graph of variable costs:

  • products,
  • medical service,
  • spending on the car
  • clothes,
  • payment for gas, electricity, water,
  • personal expenses of spouses (recorded and planned separately),
  • Seasonal spending on gifts
  • contributions to school and kindergarten,
  • entertainment,
  • expenses for children.

Depending on your desire, you can add to, refine the list or reduce it by enlarging and combining expenditure items.

Step 3: Track Spending During the Month

It’s unlikely that it will work out a table for the family budget this hour; It will take one to two months. In the ready-made excel spreadsheet that you can download for free, start making expenses by gradually adjusting the categories “for themselves».

Below you will find detailed explanations of this document, since this excel includes several interrelated tables at once.

  • The purpose of this step is to get a clear picture of your financial situation, visually see the structure of expenses and, in the next step, adjust the budget.

Step 4: Separate needs from desires.

When people start recording spending, they discover that a lot of money "flies away"For completely unnecessary things. Impulse, unplanned expenses seriously hit the budget, if the level of income is not so great that a couple - another thousand pass unnoticed.

Discard the purchase until you are sure that the thing is absolutely necessary for you. Wait a few weeks. If it turns out that you really cannot live without the desired object, then this is indeed a necessary waste.

A little advice: Set aside credit and debit cards. Use cash to learn how to save. It is psychologically easier to part with virtual sums than counting down pieces of paper.

How to plan a family budget in the table

Now you know what is really going on with your money.

Look at the categories of expenses that you want to reduce and make your own plan using a free excel spreadsheet.

Many people do not like the word "budget”Because they believe that it is restrictions, deprivation and lack of entertainment. Relax, an individual spending plan will allow you to live within your means, avoid stress and sleep better, and not think about how to get out of debt.

Например, вы запланировали тратить на продукты 15 тыс. every month, but after a couple of months, you noticed that you spend only 14 thousand. Make additions to the table - redirect the saved amount to the “savings” column.

How to plan a budget with irregular income

Not everyone has a regular job with regular payroll. This does not mean that you cannot create a budget, but it does mean that you should plan in more detail.

  • One strategy is to calculate the average income over the past few years and focus on this figure.
  • Second way - define yourself a stable salary from your own income - what you will live on, and save the excess on an insurance account. In lean months, the account balance will decrease exactly by the amount that is missing. But your "salary" will remain unchanged.
  • Third Planning Option - keep two budget tables in parallel: for "good"And"bad"Months. This is somewhat more complicated, but nothing is impossible. The danger lurking on this path: people spend and take loans, waiting for income from the best months. If the black line drags on a bit, the credit funnel will eat both current and future earnings.

Family budget table

Below you will find solutions on how to distribute the family budget according to the table.

After we have decided on the main goals, let's try to distribute the family budget for a month, indicate current incomes and expenses in the table, in order to properly manage the funds, to be able to postpone to main goals, without losing current and daily necessities.

Open the second sheet “Budget”And fill in the fields of monthly receipt, annual income, and the program will calculate the results itself, for example:

In the column "variable costs"And"fixed costs»Enter the estimated numbers. Add new items where it stands "other", In place of unnecessary names, enter your own:

Now go to the tab of the month from which you decided to start saving and planning family expenses. On the left you will find the columns in which you need to fix the date of purchase, select a category from the drop-down list and make a mark.

  • Additional notes are very convenient to refresh your memory if necessary and clarify what exactly the money is spent on.

The data that is entered in the table for an example, simply delete and record your own:

To account for expenses and income by month, we suggest looking at the table on the third sheet in our Excel “This year“, This table is filled automatically based on your expenses and income, summarizes and gives an idea of your success:

And on the right there will be a separate table that will automatically summarize all expenses for the year:

Nothing complicated. Even if you have never tried to master the work with Excel tables, select the desired cell and enter the numbers - all that is required.

Family budget - the eternal debate

Maintaining a family budget is a true art that is not subject to everyone. But to master it, at least try to do it, it is recommended for each person. With proper planning, financial problems are not terrible. They simply will not. Except when the salary is delayed. And the scale of the problems will be minimal.

Family budget refers to all financial income in the family for the month. And planning it is a waste to be done. Many do not know how to spend money. Hence, the distribution of income received, there are certain problems. What can help not to get into a financial hole, not to get bogged down in debts, to live within our means, and also to save some of the money for a rainy day? There are many different tips and recommendations. The following are the best and most effective.

Analysis of past purchases

The first stage is the analysis of all purchases made in the past month. Some are not able to properly distribute funds. And so they end up in a financial pit. To understand what was wrong, you need to look at all the purchases.

It is likely that a lot of money goes to not the most important things. Quite often, after receiving a salary, people spend most of their finances on entertainment, and then they don’t have enough for what they need. Of course, this is not worth doing. It is for this reason that it is required to analyze all purchased. Each person will certainly have a list of what one could do without. Only the most prudent will not have such a column. But such people and without analysis are perfectly planning a family budget.

Priorities

How to properly manage money? The question is difficult. After all, each person has their own income, as well as their own inquiries to life. And the priorities are different too. After analyzing the purchases will have to break them into several components. Namely:

  • first priority (high priority)
  • necessary
  • desired
  • unnecessary.

Accordingly, everything that is not included in the first 2 columns can be excluded from spending on the future. And first of all to spend money only on the most necessary and important for life. The balance of the funds is either set aside or spent on what one wants. At first it will be difficult to decide on priorities, but over time this problem will disappear.

Mandatory components

What can you spend money on? It has already been said - all people have their own demands for life and spending. Nevertheless, everybody has obligatory expenses. Usually they converge. Funds from the family budget must first be spent on priority items.

What is related to them? As a rule, the obligatory expenses in each month include:

All this - the necessary purchases. Entertainment at the initial stage of budget planning is better to exclude. Then it will be noticeable how much money remains at the end of the month. And they can already be spent wherever they want. Or postpone.

How to spend money on products? Many are asking just such a question. Practice shows that huge expenses are connected with food. That is why it is important to remember a few rules that contribute to savings.

What advise people who do not know how to spend less money? With regard to the purchase of products recommend:

  1. To study stocks in stores. During them you can save well.
  2. Buy in store. These include the purchase of: cereals, pasta, canned food, "frost". Especially when it comes to acquisitions on profitable shares.
  3. Buy at wholesale bases. They are in every city. This solution allows many to save very well. Shopping for the future, and even at reduced prices - this is the key to success.
  4. Make a shopping list. And, most importantly, do not retreat from it. No extra products, even if you really want. At first it will be difficult, but you need to try.
  5. "No" fast food and cafes. While a person is thinking about how to spend money, it is not recommended to eat in cafes and fast food. Even the most "modest" lunch is expensive. It will be possible to return such food only after a well-established budget planning system.

There is nothing difficult about it. It is enough even to select the necessary components among the products and those without which it is possible to do. It is recommended to cook at home to the maximum. A good housewife will cook most expensive delicacies at home. For example, delicious pizza. And inexpensive and tasty!

We collect checks

The next tip is to collect checks. All purchases that have been made must be recorded. And checks are great help in this. They also contribute to the proper analysis of all acquired.

The main thing - do not forget to take into account anything. This is the key to successful budget planning. Through checks one can understand where and what is more expensive, what expenses can be excluded. Really very good advice. But it will be extremely difficult to follow. Even the bus ride will have to be fixed. However, the presence of checks greatly simplifies the accounting of purchases. Especially when they are recorded in the appropriate table of expenses.

Expense table

Home bookkeeping is something that requires careful planning. Proper budget allocation will help you quickly learn how to save and live within your means. To record all purchases, and then analyze them as accurately as possible, it is proposed to maintain a table of expenses. And revenues as well.

That is the principle of home accounting. The table may have different expenses. But, as a rule, the most primitive summary list contains the following items:

  • income from each family member
  • products,
  • communal payments,
  • clothes,
  • passage,
  • household goods,
  • footwear,
  • training,
  • savings
  • products,
  • medication
  • presents,
  • totals (on expenses at the end of the month, on income, the difference between profit and expenses),
  • other

Every day, on the basis of checks, you will have to write down expenses here. Accurate to the day of purchases made or the receipt of regular profits. Some separately write the item "products". In order not to deal with this problem, you can simply attach checks. It saves time well.

Balance at the end of the month

Accordingly, all this will help answer how to spend money. Most likely, some amount at the end of the month will remain "free." She can be spent on additional desires. For example, going to a cafe with the whole family. Or a gift to a child. The main thing is that the "free" amount of money can be spent at your discretion. Or postpone.

It is recommended to distribute cash from time to time so that the balance at the end of the month increases. Not necessarily, but it is desirable to do just that. When all the necessary purchases are made and the obligatory payments are closed, you can give some freedom in spending.

How to save money

Some are interested in how to properly manage money and still learn how to postpone. In fact, it is not so difficult. Especially if you follow all the previously listed tips.

By the way, you can also save money monthly, and at the same time save "free" money. How exactly? There is one rather interesting method. He helps many.

It is about postponing a certain amount of all income received in an envelope or in a bank. What was postponed is not taken into account in family accounting. That is, upon receipt of a salary, a specified amount is required to be removed, thereby forming a “airbag”. Usually people save 10% of their profits.

What does it mean? On an example the situation will look like this:

A person has a salary of 25,000 rubles. Plus, he makes a monthly profit of renting an apartment of 5,000. Monthly income will be 30 thousand rubles. From this amount, 10% is removed "in the envelope" immediately. And formed emergency reserve. 27 000 remains for all expenses. This amount is distributed according to the table of the family budget for expenditures: obligatory, desired, utility payments.

A very good way to save and create savings. Many, as already mentioned, it is recommended to open a deposit in the bank and transfer money there. This will help not to touch the funds and save them. In any case, "emergency reserve" should be in heavy access. Only in emergency situations are allowed to spend data accumulation.

Plan and facts

How to spend money in the family? Those who have already mastered the previously listed methods can slightly expand the table of income and expenses. And add to it such components as the "plan" and "in fact."

In the first column it is necessary to prescribe what expenses and for what amount are planned. The second is entered information about the real costs. Quite an interesting way to plan "free money". It is recommended to reduce the "on the fact" monthly. Just like the plan section. Of course, given the fact that the decrease in these indicators does not harm the life and well-being of the family.

No loans

How to spend less money? Some people think that loans are a good way to save money. In fact, the majority of citizens who have learned to live within their means, and also to postpone well, say the opposite.

Taking loans when planning a budget is not recommended. But it is not necessary to exclude them from the pivot table if available. Lack of credit is a positive outlook. If a person has no debts, then you can postpone the previously paid amount for a rainy day.

Personal needs

How to spend money? Some do not understand this. If we are talking about one person, then there are no special problems with budget planning. But as soon as a family appears, certain difficulties arise, as has already been said.

The thing is that everyone has personal needs. What every person wants for himself. While learning to plan and maintain home bookkeeping, you need to overshadow your desires.

By the way, all "free" money at the end of the month is recommended to be distributed among family members for personal needs. Or enter a separate column in the table of expenses and income for this purpose. To allocate to everyone on desires a firm sum of money.

That's the way to properly conduct a family budget. The example of the table that follows is not the most advanced method. Rather, it is suitable for beginners. Through it, you can easily learn to distribute finances so as not to fall into a financial hole.

An approximate table of expenses and revenues looks like.

7. Use shopping lists

Create a special list in Google Keep, where you will mark what you need to buy in the near future, and share it for family members. Before going to the store, check home supplies and add to the list everything that is over or almost over, so as not to accidentally buy too much.

8. Watch your health

A seal has fallen - go to the dentist, not waiting until the tooth collapses completely. Yes, it's scary, but if you run it, it will be even worse from the final score. Quit smoking and reduce alcohol consumption — save on cigarettes, bar tours, and on treating the effects of a fun lifestyle.

Why do I need to keep a budget

I by no means urge to save on what is important to you. But it’s better to know, and to understand how much money it actually takes from you, so that you can make an informed choice. No less important is the knowledge of their true desires, real dreams. I wrote about this in the article How to change life for the better or what prevents you from traveling.

You have a lever of pressure on your family members :) For example, a wife comes to her husband and says, so we don’t buy me anything, don’t spoil me, and you already bought Macbook for 50 thousand, ah-ah. Silently, the husband opens the budget, makes a sample for the year and shows that, in addition to the MacBook, during the year he bought himself only a couple of T-shirts, while his wife for the whole year already got 100 thousand clothes, he just bought everything not one time periodically.

In general, the budget is a great thing in order to understand how your expenses are going. In reality, many people think that you will think only 1,000 rubles more expensive, but in fact these thousand rubles for the whole year (and for someone else in a month) it comes in so much that you can buy a car! Toy :) In fact, I'm not kidding, saving the family budget is the only way to make it up - out of the little things, this is the main feature. 1000 rubles saved = 1000 rubles earned. Recently I considered that my smoking friend spends about the cost of a good laptop on cigarettes a year. That is, if he did not smoke, he could change the laptop once a year.

Only I beg you not to confuse savings with poverty. Trying to increase your earnings is a necessary and obligatory desire, and not at all contrary to economy. As in business, there is always an accountant who optimizes costs. And, if you go in two directions at the same time, earning, and deliberately sifting unnecessary expenses, you can reach your goal much faster.

I sincerely do not understand the situation when requests are growing faster than income. That's the point of spending everything and getting into debts / loans, for the sake of what? Isn't it better to postpone or invest in order to gain financial independence and freedom? Otherwise, you can earn millions, but still "begging".

So, the advantages of the points.

  • Control. You always clearly know what you are spending money on. There are no questions, but where did half the salary go, and who spent it.
  • Conscious choice. After a couple of months of budget management, you really know how much each item of expenditure is, and you may well want to adjust it (decrease / increase). Thus, unnecessary expenses are eliminated.
  • No debt. Getting into debt / loans is minimized, because you can calculate everything in advance and avoid it.
  • Easier to plan purchases. If you want to buy something big or go somewhere else, with a budget it is much easier to plan. You can find out in which month you will have a sufficient amount, which is very convenient, or how you need to change the structure of spending so that this amount appears.
  • Useful for long journeys. You can always plan ahead for how many months enough money.
  • Convenient for dismissal. You can find out how much time there is and calculate when it’s time to start looking for work.
  • Disciplines. And in terms of spending, and in terms of life in general.

I have a budget since 2008. I tried it once and I liked it. Thanks to the budget, it was possible to plan more than one trip, or rather to understand the possibility of its implementation in a particular month under specific conditions. He also helped me a lot after my dismissal in 2010.

Then I immediately calculated how many months of free life I can get, which countries to go to and which things to buy.

Or else, “not allowing” to have more money for yourself, such a psychological barrier can be obtained.

How to maintain a family budget

As I already wrote above, the basic principles (well, or pluses) are the control of spending, the conscious choice and the elimination of expenses that you do not need. And the budget is based on this: you plan spending on the desired period of time and then stick to them. Also in the process you need to note these expenses in order to relate the actual expenses with the planned ones.

How strictly do all this, everyone decides for himself. At first I conducted everything very strictly in order to understand where and what was leaving, and then I relaxed, began to round off and carry on everything approximately. The result was a floating budget, in which the main thing was the absence of unnecessary expenses, the correspondence of expenses to incomes (needs and possibilities), and not strict conformity and economy for the sake of economy.

  • There are items of income and expenditure. The number of articles there and there can be absolutely anything, as long as it is convenient for you. I started with significant detail, and then simplified everything and combined many articles. If you do not know where to start, then start with any articles, usually after a couple of months of budget management it becomes all the less clear. Although I still adjust sometimes.
  • In my opinion, items of income and expenses need to be written such as what you will then analyze, or for which you need to track the dynamics. If this is not important to you, then in general you can make one item of expenditure and one item of income. In general, the entire budget can be reduced to a paper envelope, that is, to put in it at the beginning of the month the amount you are going to spend, and then you will see something or not.
  • I write down expenses every day, it's more convenient, and it only takes a couple of minutes. But basically the application on the phone does everything for me, it recognizes sms and writes them to the database. And when you need to plan something serious, for example, wintering in Thailand, then you can sit for half an hour.
  • Keep a budget can, and the husband and wife, both together and someone alone. How to agree, in general. Or rather, who would like it more. However, when they lead together (both spending notes and plan), it will be easier to discuss something than if someone distributes from it.
  • Should I keep a joint or separate budget, I will not say. There are different opinions on this. I personally accept both options. When in a pair both are self-sufficient and earn, then, firstly, everyone is more calm and confident in the future, and secondly, he will only be happy with a separate budget.
  • You can keep a budget without planning at all. That is, just note the income / expenses and check whether everything is in order (control). In some applications and online planning services and no.
  • The essence of spending control is that you have a positive balance (reserve), that is, a positive difference between income and expenses. Let not every month, but in a quarter or a year. Well, that the tendency was visible, in a minus there live or in plus. This reserve can be accumulated or spent on something useful.
  • Usually in all smart books, 5-10% of income is advised to be put into the financial buffer or invested, regardless of the goals. 5-10% - this is, indeed, that amount, which is almost not noticeable in any income. I do not have such austerity. Sometimes I get into the buffer (I'm leaving for a minus), sometimes I save 50%.

How to choose a program

You can create any convenient family budget table in Excel yourself or use ready-made services / applications for budget management, since they are in bulk (Junk, Zen-mani, Monefy, etc.).

Some services have their own site-service and a mobile application, some are just an application, some are just a website. In my opinion, it is more convenient that the option when you can use, and the application on the phone, and the online version on the site from a laptop. This was one of the reasons why I chose Trash in my time and have been sitting on them for many years.

It is also possible and quite the old-fashioned way - write on a piece of paper. However, there is a risk that this piece of paper will be lost at one fine moment, and even correcting something in the electronic budget is much easier.

How did I choose a program to manage the family budget? I went to Google Play, downloaded 5 pieces of android applications that I liked by the screenshots and descriptions, and began to try them. Somewhere 10 minutes for each application. As a result, two were left that were more or less clear to me, or in other words, where I was satisfied with the logic of budget management. It is important that my principle of reference in my head coincided with the intention of the author of the application. Otherwise, it will take a very long time to understand what to do here. No, everything must be intuitive. Next, I tried a couple of days to spend money to see if it was convenient for me or not.

How to keep a budget in Excel

From 2008 to 2013, I kept the budget in Excel. You can download an Excel file that represents a simplified template for my budget. Or here is another latest revision of my budget (more complicated file), taking into account different income / expense channels (cards, electronic money).

One sheet in Excel is one month. The budget is monthly and scheduled for 2-3 months in advance, no less. To plan for six months in advance, you need to create another 6 sheets with the name “monthYear” (for the formula to work), and so on.

In each month there are two columns - planned spending and actual. The first column is for planning, the second for current spending.

How to keep a budget in Excel

In my file (especially in the second) there are formulas, if you are not friends with them, then it is better to try to make something of your own or use ready-made services. Otherwise, you have to understand. In short, in the second file, you can note the costs per day depending on how you spent them: cash, electronic money, cards. And the balance is then considered exactly the same for all these places of storage of funds.

The second version is more complicated

Service Drebendengi

Since 2013, I transferred the budget to the Drebedengi website and am very pleased. Now I mark all expenses from the phone, and I plan on the laptop online.

Many operations are automated, for example, all expenses on a bank card fall into the budget themselves. Thus, if you practically do not use cash (and I just try to minimize it), then almost nothing to note and do not need. Read a separate post about using Trash and their phone application, because it’s too long to talk here.

So a simple Excel spreadsheet is only good for a start, potesting so to speak. And already after they decided that the budget should be, then it is possible to go into services, including paid ones.

The budget on the site Drebedengi

P.S. Do you have a family or personal budget?

Life hacking 1 - how to buy a good insurance

Choosing insurance is now unrealistically difficult, so to help all travelers, I make a rating. To do this, I constantly monitor forums, study insurance contracts and use insurance by myself.

Life hacking 2 - how to find a hotel 20% cheaper

First, choose a hotel on Booking. They have a good offer base, but the prices are NOT the best! The same hotel can often be found at 20% cheaper in other systems through the RoomGuru service.

Comments are welcome! (already 130)

We are about the way we manage our budget. The plate looks a little different, but the principle is the same.
And for travel, all records are kept in local currency in an additional column, and the totals are additionally recalculated and the currency of income (we have ruble income)
If unexpected currencies of payments come out - IP telephony if it is paid in dollars, I enter the table immediately in rubles.

2011-03-25 at 10:22 | #

We have a more complicated sign, there is still accounting webmoney, Yandex money, cards, plus some formulas. But it is better to individually customized for themselves.

And what do you think the additional graph for the currency? We have not bothered yet, since 1 baht is almost equal to a ruble, and I just make an amendment once a month.

2011-03-25 at 12:20 | #

Yes, everything is simple.
There are columns: the arrival (rubles), consumption (rubles), consumption (pounds)
Everything is summed up by the item of expenses automatically; I do not take into account time - only the date. Each month has its own nameplate and there is a summary table for the year - for general statistics and a good comparison.

For counting in one currency, there is a klenka of the local currency exchange rate to the ruble (average speculative exchange rate by month). The total ruble sums for the articles and, generally, for the month are displayed in the final table.
Phew I hope, clearly described. It is necessary to do this on your blog post with pictures - it will be clearer.

2014-07-31 at 1:10 pm | #

So the rubbish allows you to set how many currencies you want. For some, they themselves pull up a course, for some they can be set.
But in fact there is a currency exchange. I removed 20,000 baht from the card, then checked, yeah - 25,000 rubles, put it in the accounting department and that's it. Then spend the baht calmly.

2014-07-31 at 21:03 | #

Yes, there is currency exchange, and everything is very conveniently done just for such cases :)

2014-08-16 at 18:00 | #

We use Coinkeeper. There the course is automatically set, or you can manually enter during the transaction)) Convenient handy program!

2014-08-18 at 23:35 | #

I put them, but something is not all that I need to find there. Is there a budget planning?

2014-08-19 at 07:18 | #

Yes. There are proposed the following periods of budgeting: a week, 2 weeks, 4 weeks, a month, a quarter and a year. I usually do for a month. If planning for half a year is required, for example, it is better to calculate it in some other program.

2012-02-27 at 1:26 pm | #

We also have such a detailed table. At first, she helped us figure out what we generally spend on and what we can and should sacrifice in order to save and for the health benefits.

2011-03-25 at 10:19 | #

More on cost accounting:
try to keep all the checks. In the evening on them and we bring expenses in the table. And if it was purchased on the market, then immediately after the trip I take everything on a pencil.

2011-03-25 at 10:23 | #

Yes, everything is exactly the same))) I have the truth in my head, usually all spending for the day is saved without checks. Memory really only lasts for 2-3 days maximum.

2011-03-25 at 12:23 | #

I don’t hope so - there is a chance to forget something. Yes, and if recorded - then you can throw it out of my head. Peculiar hygiene of the brain.

2011-03-25 at 10:27 am | #

Hi Oleg. And how do you account for the transfer of money from currency to currency? Or will there be a new file for the new country? Thank. Hi Dasha

2011-03-25 at 10:41 | #

Alex, hello!
We still have one currency - baht. And the course is very close. Therefore, we have the same file, just once a month I make a small amendment.

When we went to Laos, or to Europe, we simply wrote spending in rubles (baht) in my mind, recounting. But if you had to live a long time in a country where the exchange rate is very different, you would have to do either an additional column or simply switch completely to another currency in the budget.

And for the money that we withdraw from the ruble card, enter the conversion factor, that is, the rate.
Understand, explained?

I just did not load the tablet with additional information. As for those who do not keep a budget, it will be enough for the beginning.

2011-03-25 at 10:44 | #

Clear. The budget is important, though I sometimes forget to fix everything in time :)

2011-03-25 at 11:46 | #

I will share my very small trick: I, like Oleg, cannot hold all expenses in my head for 2-3 days, so I do it easier - I always carry a pencil and a piece of paper with me in my wallet. Every time I pay, I immediately write down the expenses, and throw out this unnecessary information from my head. And at home I’m making a note of everything to the budget. Simple but effective! :)

2014-07-31 at 12:28 | #

There is also a bunch of software for planning a home budget in which you can set any kind of currency and set the rates of the currencies you use (baht, rubles, dollars, euro).

2014-07-31 at 12:29 | #

This was the comment of 2011, then there was little software)))

2014-07-31 at 12:32 | #

oops, litter))) Something I did not look at the date.

2014-07-31 at 12:35 | #

This is my just updated post, almost completely rewritten. Therefore, the comments are old. Somehow it was a shame to sit on it a couple of days to redo it and not to re-publish it))

2011-03-25 at 10:45 | #

Oleg, tell us together with Daria, how do you get along in your travels? Has your relationship changed? Has the perception of each other changed? How are responsibilities distributed? Intimate details are not needed))). It is the psychological component that interests))

2011-03-25 at 11:09 | #

HM ... Igor, an interesting topic. We need to think and perhaps write a post, not a comment. The only moment we are now traveling from the category of "live and travel." That is, we look at the country while living in it, move a little, linger for several months in one place.

So in this case, everything is much simpler. Since there is a time. But when you are on short and intensive travels, or on tourist trips, those moments that you ask about, because of stress and physical fatigue, appear there.

2011-03-25 at 11:19 | #

Well, why immediately about conflicts during stress and fatigue. I think many would be interested to learn about the changes in attitudes to the family, to the relationship, well, and other related things ...))

2011-03-25 at 11:35 | #

And because just then, something can change - a look, an attitude, and so on. When everything is easy, what will be the reason?

If you just live in another country, then the view of the country changes, both for living and for the Russian Federation. Well, that is, everything changes of course, but at the same pace as if you were just living at home.

2011-03-25 at 12:08 pm | #

Let me try to answer? :)

It seems to me not quite right to speak only about travel.
The first changes occur when both are retired in a pair and are seen around the clock instead of the usual 2-3 hours a day! That is, our joint day together is almost the week of a couple’s life together, where both work and are glimpsed in the evenings, and, if lucky, in the mornings. Cons - went the second round of grinding in and getting used to each other. Pros - we got even closer, got to know each other even better, got used to each other even more! Of course, a lot of work has been done for this, but for the better!

The second change is a common cause. Suppose that in the conduct of the blog, I play a supporting role, and the main work lies with Oleg, but it's so great when there is something in common! In addition to common views on life and common interests, there is also a common cause. Of course, we sometimes consider how many did, but there is always something to talk about, what to discuss, and what to share!

Well, travels: as Oleg said, a hike is the best test and a great opportunity to get to know each other thoroughly, which also has its advantages and disadvantages. After all, you can learn something that well, I don’t like it at all :) In our case, everything is simple - we were friends for a long time and went on hikes even before we started dating, so we don’t discover anything radically new in each other. But sometimes we teach each other to cope with those bugs that we already know, but which emerge during the campaign.

In a simple journey, everything is simpler, somehow the roles were distributed by themselves: Oleg is the navigation and the development of the plan, and I am the language and communication.
Oh, but in general, I can talk endlessly on this topic. When people together and understand that their joint family happiness is the daily work of both, then everything is very good. Well, and accordingly, the closer people are to each other, and the more time they spend with each other, the easier it is for them to work and build this same happiness. :)

2011-03-25 at 12:24 | #

Daria, thank you very much for the response!
It’s just that many people have problems in the family, in relationships ... Oleg here writes in a purely technical language, everything is clear and on the shelves. But many are interested in those questions that you raised in your answer. Questions of understanding each other, issues of adaptation to constantly changing circumstances, language barrier, relationships with meeting people.

I would like to walk with pleasure in the course of languages (now you know the necessary minimum for communication which is to advise people to learn). How many languages do you know?

2011-03-25 at 16:37 | #

Igor, you gave us the idea of writing an article on this topic, I will probably write it :)

I know only 2 languages, besides my own. And it helps me so much in my life!

I would advise to begin to bring a decent level of knowledge of English. This is generally the necessary minimum of life, which you need to know just be sure! And not only those who are going to travel and live in another country. This language is needed simply to see the world as it is: read foreign media, learn world news (and news about your country) from independent sources, have the opportunity to communicate with interesting people ...

And the knowledge of French allows me to communicate with the French both in Europe and in Tae (many of which for some reason fundamentally do not want to speak English). And I love this language so much!

Personally, I’m seriously thinking of recalling German (I’ve been in such situations many times when I regretted not remembering this language) and learning the basics of Thai if we decide to stay here, because everything is peculiar to English from Thais :)

2011-03-25 at 10:58 | #

They also tried to write in a homemade file, or write a note in travels. Now they have completely (already more than a year) moved to the drebedengi website - everything is very convenient to take into account. This is not an advertisement, because I have no relation to this service. This is a tip)

2011-03-25 at 11:10 | #

I'll have to try. However, this requires the Internet, which is not always. Especially when moving. And so with just a file on a flash drive and a netbook.

2011-03-25 at 11:17 | #

The people there are engaged in the creation of applications for the phone. And I kind of heard that there will be an offline application for the computer, which will then synchronize the data if there is an Internet connection.

2011-03-25 at 11:33 am | #

I already went. There is an offline version in sync with the site.

2011-03-25 в 11:19 | #

Does it really help? I mean, do you manage to plan your budget and expenses? Although it may be stupid to ask ... In any case, my wife and I are not able to budget income and control expenses. All by itself somehow ...

2011-03-25 at 11:32 | #

Well, maybe someone does not need, if everything happens by itself))

We cannot do without this, without knowing what financial situation will be in six months. It is very convenient to build plans)) We are not receding from the budget almost, well, maybe by 10%.

2011-03-25 at 11:44 | #

To keep a budget is really convenient, believe everything! First, you will immediately see your expenses, which will spur in many cases to save! Secondly, you really will know how much and what you spend per month. Thirdly - make a budget plan for the month and try to fulfill it - in a couple of months it will settle down and you will not deviate from it even by 10%.
In short, I advise everyone - a sensible and useful occupation. I did not believe before

2011-03-25 at 14:14 | #

By the way, how are you doing there? Today the news said that Laos, Thailand and Myanmar were shaking ... You are in those parts now?

2011-03-25 at 16:25 | #

Shaken, we wrote off with our friends in Chiang Mai, they say, there was an earthquake. But we’ve moved to the south, that's all, thank God, calmly for now.

2011-03-25 at 17:00 | #

Still ... be on the alert! ,)

2011-03-25 at 11:40 | #

Well, do not say ...
even just living in a different country, a lot of things change, each one has a different social circle (no friends, friends, acquaintances), the content of the received information changes (perhaps even a complete lack of news from the homeland) ... the partner’s value changes, as no one is around ...

2011-03-25 at 11:53 | #

Well, yes, in this regard, you are right ... It's just that when you boil in your own juice, you probably don't notice much. Here we go back to the Russian Federation, then for sure it will be possible to say what has changed)))

2011-03-25 at 11:40 | #

not posted there (((

2011-03-25 at 12:10 | #

Thank you, useful article, I have long wanted to try to keep records of not only income, but also expenses. I think that after reading this post, just get started.

2011-03-25 at 12:19 | #

Fully agree with you on this issue. It would seem that such a special thing in the management of its budget. It is commonplace and everyone does it. But in fact it turns out that for many people, planning their incomes and expenses is something out of the ordinary. In schools, mathematics is taught, and they forget to show how to apply this knowledge in practice. It is possible that this is the cause of senseless loans, extra expenses and reckless purchases. We have been conducting similar accounting in Excel since 2006, and also thanks to this we were able to successfully plan and implement our long-term trip to Thailand.
Guys - you are great! Your blog is just a live educational program,)

2011-03-25 at 17:22 | #

Those with similar paths of life have even more in common than they themselves can imagine. Our budget was born in 2007 :)

2011-03-25 at 13:26 | #

It would seem that how to manage a budget is a simple topic, but the burning questions were raised here!
It is relationships and desires that both influence spending in another country, but what if you have opinions on education and shopping for a child, what would you do? :) We have had conflicts with Zhanna and more than once in the journey and “Wintering in Tae”. However, on this and different natures - to complement each other.
As for the post - for earlier everything can be planned only in one country or area in general, Oleg. We tried for the first time to lay the budget for a vizaran in Cambodia, it did not work, it turned out more, because on the spot, it was already decided to go to Sihanoukville, for example, and not to chalitsya in the dirty Phnom Pena, after arriving from Bangkok! Yes, and much is applicable within the country and the currency of the country, although you can convert everything into rubles / baht.
But there are also fleeting doings, for example, we have to spend money on TESKO, especially Zhanna liked to collect a lot of things, because we prepared houses for the most part and collect 1-2 thousand for one visit to TESKO, and we did them regularly, but to buy new toys to replace broken ones for Vasilisa, to buy new clothes, simply because we had to throw out a part when moving to a new place , so as not to drag on ourselves + plus, every time we started new floor covering, we wash the floors in the house :)
And they loved to visit the MAXIMUM attractions in the area, but, for example, to swim around the islands in Krabi is not a cheap pleasure, so they chose time for this and cooperated with someone!
Here it is impossible to calculate one month in advance, because we usually did not live in one place / district / house for more than a month!
In general, a very cool and handy thing - a budget in Excel! Although you can edit with the PDA.

2011-03-26 at 07:30 | #

Alexey! All women are the same! :)

And we have disagreements about the need for another item for me or some not very necessary, but very attractive product. We decided this question in such a way that in the budget, by mutual agreement, a certain amount of money is allocated to my clothes every month. Thus, I know that I can always buy everything I want, but within this amount. If I get out for this amount, it means that next month I refrain from shopping. In my opinion, everything is simple, and there is no such endless stream of purchased and discarded things that have not yet worked out their resources.

About excursions and unforeseen changes of plans: So in this budget is generally the first assistant! You plan ahead for your spending for the month and see how much free money you have left. It is clear that there will still be inaccuracies; we usually plan on laying in a bit more. We have a separate graph - entertainment, there we record the estimated expenses for excursions, etc., and also, we got an article for ourselves - Unforeseen expenses. When you keep a budget for a long time, you already know how much each month it takes for such unforeseen needs.

But everyone has it all differently. We decided to share how we do it, because it is so very convenient for us to manage our finances. And it is quite normal that such an approach may not be suitable for someone. But suddenly, our actions will give somebody a good idea :)

2011-03-26 at 07:32 | #

Here, say why your comments every time aklamest to his spam puts? It would be a shame to lose such a text ...

On this topic. Everyone has different experiences and different goals. I do not impose, I just offer options for what helps us. From all that you have listed, something difficult to relate to us. And it is the budget that allows us to plan everything in advance. For example, we have everything planned until August 2011. I did the planning somewhere in December-January. And you know, to this day, the deviation from the amount is about 10000r. In my opinion this is a normal error, for half a year then. Considering that we visited two countries besides Thailand, we periodically move around and look at the sights, and in a month we return to Russia.

That is, the goal is this - in August 2011 to have such a balance on your account. And if this is important for us, then there will be no unnecessary spending, otherwise the goal will be broken. I have 4 years of experience in budget management, and I know how much and where we can spend, regardless of the country. Plus, I always pledge unforeseen expenses, and our budget is planned according to a not very bright scenario. It is the budget that allows us not to make rash spending. I am not a supporter of shopping at all "wanted." For me personally, this is not typical at all - too pragmatic approach to things. And I periodically pull my wife back))

Here, in fact, the conclusion is - choose, as you prefer))

2011-03-28 at 15:40 | #

Ajay hasn’t unsubscribed here yet, but I’m almost sure that he will write, apparently, hasn’t yet seen the post)) He made us a table in Excel for budget accounting, we use four months. Only we have a trick that the budget is not yet family-owned, separate) He made this table so that we can invest our equally in a common wallet, but individual expenses like clothes, personal devices, alcohol, food in restaurants, hygiene are considered separately ( and the total cost in half, there is home rent and transport, communications, bytovuha for home, products for home cooking). At the end of the month one can see how much, when and for what he spent and what is his balance.
Perhaps, when we have ways of making money more or less equal and a child is born, then we will combine the budget completely, but for now the separation is more than enough for us. I really like the fact that we never touch each other about personal expenses. “Do you want to order more beer? Please at least five. “Do you want this incomprehensible haharyashka? Well, your business ") In general, there is no disagreement over money and life, and this, in my opinion, is very valuable. There is practically no reason for quarrels)

2011-03-28 at 16:31 | #

Yes, Masha, I know, I read already that you have a separate budget. This is really convenient for everyone to see what his balance is, and take responsibility for their expenses. But, as practice has shown, it is more convenient for us to push each other down))) And it may well be that even as our earnings stabilize, we will divide the budget a little, well, or just stop pulling back))

2011-03-25 at 13:59 | #

Wow! Oleg, Daria, at first I sincerely admired and even thought - wouldn’t I have such a good habit?
But no, this is not for me. I am an undisciplined person, I can not tolerate something to count.
It would be better to spend money without thinking, while still young. )) And it is more pleasant to think about other things.

2011-03-25 at 14:36 | #

Galina, so everyone chooses what is more convenient for him. If you do not have such that at the end of each month you are in a panic, clutching your head with wonder where your money went, and there is always a deferred money for exactly what you want (travel or something else you need) , and you do not make far-reaching plans, you feel comfortable without running a budget, which is very cool! :)

2011-03-25 at 15:27 | #

Yes, thank God, I am far from keeping a budget. ))
