Hedgehog - an animal that belongs to the chord type, the class mammals, the order ezheobraznye, the family of hedgehogs (Latin. Erinaceidae).

The origin of the Russian word “hedgehog” is still not fully understood. According to one version, the hedgehog got its name thanks to the Greek "echinos", which means "snake eater". Supporters of another version see the word “hedgehog” as the Indo-European root “eg`h”, meaning “to prick”.

Hedgehog: description and photo. What does an animal look like?

The hedgehog's body length, depending on the species, ranges from 10 to 44 cm. The weight of the hedgehog varies from 300 grams to 1.5 kilograms. The animal also has a tail that grows from 1 to 21 cm in length.

The animals have a large wedge-shaped head and an elongated muzzle with a pointed, mobile and moist nose.

The hedgehog's teeth are small and sharp; there are 20 teeth on the upper jaw and 16 teeth on the lower jaw. Some types of hedgehogs have up to 44 teeth. The first incisors are enlarged and look like fangs.

The hind legs are longer than the front, each limb ends with 5 toes, with the exception of the white-bellied hedgehog, whose hind legs have 4 toes.

Long middle fingers help the hedgehog to clean the needles.

Spines hedgehog hollow, between them grow thin, sparse, barely noticeable hairs. The head and belly of the animal are covered with ordinary wool. On average, each hedgehog wears on itself up to 10 thousand needles, which are gradually updated.

The color of the needles of most species is dark, with alternating light stripes. The coat color of the hedgehog, depending on the species, can be black-brown, brown, sand or white. Mostly black color replaces white, forming peculiar specks.

Most types of hedgehogs are distinguished by well-developed subcutaneous muscles. At the time of danger, the hedgehog coagulates, and this is where the subcutaneous muscles located in the places where the spines grow can help.

Like most nocturnal animals, hedgehogs have poor eyesight, but hearing and smell are well developed.

It is difficult to call these animals fast; the average speed of the escaping hedgehog is 3-4 km / h. Despite the fact that the hedgehog is a land animal, most of the species swim and climb very well.

Hedgehog lifespan

The life span of a hedgehog in nature is 3-5 years. At home, hedgehogs live up to 8-10 years, as they do not die from natural enemies who hunt hedgehogs in the wild. The main enemies of hedgehogs are wolves, foxes, ferrets, owls, badgers, martens, mongooses, hyenas, jackals, honey badgers, eagles, and other predators.

Where do hedgehogs live?

The habitat of hedgehogs is quite wide: this prickly animal is found in all countries of Europe - from the southern regions of Scandinavia to the British Isles, it lives in Russia and in hot Africa, in Asia, in New Zealand and in the Middle East.

In nature, wild hedgehogs live in forests, deserts, steppes, cultivated landscapes and even cities. They dig themselves mink under the roots of trees or in the bushes, and also live in abandoned rodent holes.

How do hedgehogs live in nature?

By nature, hedgehogs are nocturnal animals and loners leading a secretive lifestyle. In the afternoon, hedgehogs sleep, hiding in self-dug burrows up to 1 meter long or occupying empty rodent dwellings. Populations of foothill areas use as a shelter clefts between rocks and voids under stones. At night, wild hedgehogs go hunting, preferring not to move far from home. Unfortunately, statistics show that quite a lot of hedgehogs are dying under the wheels of cars, trying to cross the freeways at night.

What eat hedgehogs in nature?

The hedgehog is omnivorous, but the basis of the diet is made up of adult insects, earwigs, beetles, spiders, ground beetles, caterpillars, slugs, wood lice, earthworms. Also hedgehogs like to eat toads, locusts, eggs of birds, crustaceans and invertebrates. Northern hedgehog populations feed on lizards, frogs, mice and other small rodents.

All species of the hedgehog family are resistant to any, even the most toxic poisons, so hedgehogs eat poisonous snakes and scorpions. Do not disdain hedgehog carrion, as well as food waste, which can be found in the suburban areas. The forest hedgehog plant food is mushrooms, moss, acorns, cereal seeds and any sweet berries - strawberries, raspberries, blackberries.

Over the summer, the hedgehog must be well fed out, otherwise the animal may die during hibernation. A substantial supply of fat allows hedgehogs to remain in a state of suspended animation from October to April.

Types of hedgehogs: photo, name and description

The hedgehog family includes 2 subfamilies: real hedgehogs (lat. Erinaceinae) and rat hedgehogs (hymns) (lat. Galericinae), represented by 7 genera and 23 species. Below are some interesting types of hedgehogs:

  • Common Hedgehog(European hedgehog) (lat. Erinaceus europaeus)

One of the most common types of hedgehogs. The length of the body is 20-30 cm, the tail grows up to 3 cm, the weight is about 800 g. The hedgehog needles have a length of no more than 3 cm, the color is brownish-brown with dark cross-pieces. The color of the muzzle, limbs and belly may be dark or yellow-white.

The common hedgehog is a typical inhabitant of light forests, plains and parks in Western and Central Europe, Great Britain, Scandinavian countries, the West Siberian region, and the north-west of the European part of Russia and Kazakhstan.

The hedgehog of an ordinary hedgehog goes slowly, in autumn or spring. Every third needle changes. Needles grow for about a year and even a little longer.

  • Eared hedgehog(lat. Hemiechinus auritus)

Distinguished by long ears, sometimes growing up to 5 cm in length. Representatives of the species are small, the hedgehog is about 12 to 27 cm long, its weight is 430 g. The eared hedgehog needles have a length of 1.7 to 1.9 cm. In case of danger, animals rarely fold into a ball, trying to flee.

This type of hedgehogs prefers dry steppes, deserts and semi-deserts, where it keeps raw ravines and abandoned aryks. Habitat covers Africa, Asia Minor, Central Asia, India, Kazakhstan, Mongolia and China. In Russia, an eared hedgehog lives in areas from the Volga region to the Ural Mountains.

Animals feed on insects, lizards, toads, beetles, ants, small birds, berries, seeds, fruits.

  • East European Hedgehog(lat. Erinaceus concolor)

It resembles a European hedgehog, but the color of the front of the neck and abdomen is much lighter than the hair on the head and sides. Adults grow up to 35 cm in length, and the weight of a hedgehog in the summer period can reach 1.2 kg.

Eastern European species of hedgehogs are common in Austria, Germany, Slovenia, the Urals, Kazakhstan, Asia Minor and the islands of the Mediterranean. Occurs in very different terrains: on the forest edges, in parks, personal plots, fields and river valleys.

Hedgehogs feed on caterpillars, ground beetles, beetles, earwigs, snails, wood lice, slugs, earthworms, moss, acorns, sunflower seeds, berries (strawberries, raspberries, strawberries, mulberries), mushrooms.

  • African pygmy hedgehog (white-bellied hedgehog) (Latin Atelerix albiventris)

It has a body length of 15 to 22 cm. The weight of an animal reaches 350-700 g. The color is usually brown or gray, the hedgehog needles have white tips. Usually the African hedgehog snorts or screams quietly, but in case of danger it may scream loudly. The tail of a hedgehog reaches 2.5 cm in length. The eyes of the animal are small, the ears are round, the females are larger than the males.

African hedgehogs live south of the Sahara desert, in countries such as Nigeria, Sudan, Ethiopia, Senegal, and Mauritania. They eat spiders, insects, scorpions, snakes, snails, worms.

  • Long needle hedgehog (dark-needled, bald hedgehog) (lat. Paraechinus hypomelas)

Has the size to 22-27 cm in length with a body weight of 500-900 grams. The species got its name due to a small pleshine on the crown and long, thick needles, up to 4-4.2 cm long. The hedgehog needles have a different color: it can be black with a white base or very light, almost white.

Bald hedgehog lives on the plains and foothills, preferring rocky and sandy landscapes. The area partially passes through the Arabian Peninsula, the islands of the Persian Gulf, through Iran and Pakistan to Kazakhstan. It is listed in the Red Book of Uzbekistan, and is also protected by the state on the territory of Turkmenistan.

Long-needle hedgehogs eat insects, locusts, cicadas, ground beetles, weevils, snakes, small invertebrates and reptiles, including snakes, as well as rodents. Do not shrink from carrion.

  • Ethiopian hedgehog(lat. Paraechinus aethiopicus)

It features light brown needles, short, dark limbs and a dark "mask" on the face. The rest of the body is white in color. The adult individual grows to 15-25 cm in length, and the hedgehog weighs from 400 to 700 g. In general, the species is distinguished by a rare voracity.

The Ethiopian hedgehog lives in the deserts and sun-scorched steppes of North Africa: from Egypt and Tunisia to the coast of the Persian Gulf.

Ethiopian hedgehogs feed on insects, scorpions, snakes, bird eggs, frogs, termites, beetles, and locusts.

  • Daursky hedgehog(lat. Mesechinus dauuricus)

Steppe hedgehogs belong to the genus and are distinguished from most congeners by the absence of a strip of bare skin dividing the needles of the head into a parting. Spines hedgehog short, sand or brown, coarse fur, painted in gray or dark brown color.

This variety of hedgehogs is a typical inhabitant of forest-steppe and steppe massifs from Transbaikalia to Mongolia and the northern part of China. They feed hedgehogs with beetles, small mammals (hamsters, pikas), chicks and eggs of birds, snakes, frogs, toads, cotoneaster and wild rose berries.

  • Common Hymnure(lat. Echinosorex gymnura)

Refers to the subfamily rat hedgehogs. Gimnura grows in length from 26 to 45 cm with a body weight of 500 g to 2 kg. The tail of the hedgehog, covered with sparse hairs and scales, reaches 17-30 cm in length, and its back is painted white. The back and sides are black, the hedgehog's head and neck are white.

Gimnura inhabits the tropical rainforests of southeastern Asia from Malacca to Borneo. It feeds on invertebrates and small vertebrates, crustaceans, frogs, toads, fish, fruits.

  • Small hymnure (lat. Hylomys suillus)

The smallest in the family. The length of its body does not exceed 10-14 cm. The tail reaches 2.5 cm. The weight of the animal is 45-80 grams.

Animal lives in mountainous areas and on hills in the countries of Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Brunei, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, China). Small hymns eat insects and worms.

Breeding hedgehogs

At the end of hibernation, when the air warms up to 18-20 degrees, the hedgehog comes into the mating season. Sexual maturity hedgehogs reach to 10-12 months. Northern populations breed once a year, southern ones bring offspring twice.

Females of hedgehogs build nests in their burrows, lining the bottom of the pit with dry leaves and grass.

The males often fight for the female, arranging a massacre with sniffing and snorting, bite each other by the face and legs, and prick with sharp needles. Then the winner circles around the female for a long time, which thoroughly smoothes her needles before mating. Hedgehogs are polygamous animals and immediately separate after mating.

The period of gestation of offspring is from 34 to 58 days, as a result from 1 to 7 (usually 4) cubs weighing 12 grams are born.

Newborn hedgehogs are blind, covered with absolutely bare, bright pink skin. During the first days of life, soft, light and dark needles grow on the body of the little girls. After 2 weeks, the needle cover of the animal is already fully formed.

The first month the female hedgehog feeds the young with milk, then the young go on to independent living.

Keeping a hedgehog at home and taking care of him

Nowadays, hedgehogs are considered quite popular pets, but to catch a wild animal and bring it home is an unwise decision. Wild hedgehog can be a carrier of a number of dangerous diseases: ringworm, salmonellosis, hemorrhagic fever, rabies. In addition, fleas and ticks can almost always be found on hedgehogs. Therefore, the best way to acquire a funny animal is to appeal to breeders who guarantee the health of the pet, good heredity, and adaptation to livelihood in captivity.

Keep a hedgehog at home is easy. The hedgehog houses must be identified in a decent housing - a spacious, wooden or metal cage with a tray. In the cage should always be fresh sawdust or straw, as well as bowls of food and water.

Be careful, letting go of the domestic hedgehog to walk around the apartment: a pet may get tangled in the wires, get hurt, or chew on your things. The hedgehog cage must be cleaned daily from dirt to avoid unpleasant odors. Hedgehogs are loners, so if you keep 2 or more domestic hedgehogs at home, it is better to select 2 different cells for them. Also do not forget that the hedgehog is a nocturnal animal, therefore it is at night that the domestic hedgehog will rustle, puff, snort and go about its business.

How to feed a hedgehog at home?

The basis of home hedgehog food should be raw, lean, sliced meat, boiled liver and fresh fish. As a delicacy you can offer a hedgehog of bloodworms, meal worms, crickets, cockroaches. You can also feed a home hedgehog with apples and carrots. Many wonder whether hedgehogs can milk. In fact, it is impossible to feed the pet's milk, because hedgehogs are lactose intolerant, and milk can not only cause indigestion in an animal, but also lead to its death. It is also not recommended to offer homemade hedgehog earthworms, snails, slugs and cockroaches caught in nature, as they can be infected with parasites and lead to a hedgehog disease.

When do hedgehogs hibernate?

The most important thing the future owner of a prickly pet should know: even in captivity, the winter hibernation is necessary for the domestic hedgehog, even if not so long as in natural conditions. Otherwise, the animal may die by spring. True, this does not apply to African dwarf hedgehogs that do not hibernate. In the fall, the hedgehog needs to be fed hard, since it is during this period that the hedgehogs accumulate fat reserves.

In late October - early November, the animal will experience a period of stupor and lethargy, which means the beginning of hibernation. Usually in nature, hedgehogs overwinter in their nest, so an animal must be allocated a secluded place where the temperature does not exceed 5 degrees Celsius: on the loggia, attic, in the shed. In the heat of the hedgehog may not hibernate. In the nest of a home hedgehog you need to put dry leaves, sawdust, straw, rags. And then there you can determine your pet.

How to wash a hedgehog at home?

It is possible to bathe a hedgehog at home only if it is an adult healthy animal. Small newborn hedgehogs, as well as sick weak animals should not be washed. Take a basin and fill it with warm water no higher than 34.8 degrees Celsius. The water level should not exceed 5 cm. Instead of a basin, you can use a washbasin for bathing a domestic hedgehog, most importantly, follow the water temperature.

By supporting the hedgehog under the head and chest, you can immerse it in water. It is necessary to allow the hedgehog to get comfortable, but do not allow him to swim. Wash the belly and hedgehog's paws, then the back and the needles. Do not pour water on the face, otherwise the hedgehog may be frightened. To wash the needles of a hedgehog, you can use a toothbrush and a neutral baby shampoo, which should be thoroughly washed off. After washing the hedgehog can be wrapped in a towel. But in any case, do not dry it with a hair dryer and protect your pet from drafts.

What are the hedgehogs

In Russia you can find those who are kept in the home:

  • hedgehog ordinary,
  • hedgehog eared,
  • African hedgehog.

An ordinary hedgehog usually gets into an apartment from the forest and does not stay for long - it stomps loudly at night, does not want to communicate, and is generally not as simple and harmless as it all seems at first. In addition to the fact that the hedgehog can bite in response to the incomprehensible actions of people who seem to be threatening to him, it is also a carrier of infections and ticks. That is why the content of hedgehogs taken from the wild nature is not strongly recommended in the apartment, and if it so happens that you have to feed a hedgehog, do not forget to show it to the vet.

The African hedgehog is considered the most popular and, of course, the most suitable for housing maintenance. He has long been bred in captivity, devoid of diseases inherent in wild animals, fast, agile and sociable, besides the smallest of all three species - easily fits on the palm. African hedgehogs can be several colors - including an unusually beautiful chocolate and strict gray, there are among them albinos.

The hedgehog can live in a cage, a large aquarium and just in a carefully enclosed corner of the room. You can keep the hedgehog and on the loggia, if it comes out not on the sunny side. Access to the room at the same time, of course, is blocked.

As in the case of any other small animals, there should be no drafts in the place where the hedgehog is kept and direct sunlight should not fall on it.

The minimum area for one African hedgehog (hereinafter referred to mainly about them) - 1 square. If the hedgehog is not supposed to be let out for a walk around the room, then the area can be boldly multiplied by two. Releasing a hedgehog to run, you must first lift up all the wires from the floor and carefully watch him - the hedgehog gnaws everything that seems interesting to him (wires, cabinet legs, etc.), and also very cleverly clogs up in the slightest gaps, from which almost impossible.

This is done to ensure that the hedgehog who loves to dig in the litter does not throw sawdust (hay or straw - depending on what the cage floor will be lined with) throughout the room.

In the cell itself:

  • put the house. Any house for rodents from a pet store will do; you can make it yourself. It is important that the hedgehog can fit into it freely, and there is still room for bedding and insulation materials that the hedgehog will carry into the house,
  • the floor is filled with sawdust (ideally), straw or hay. It is necessary for hygiene, and the hedgehog will be happy to dig into them. So that he has something to do, you can not feed the food on a plate, but throw it directly into sawdust,
  • there is always water. You can use a special drinker for rodents or put a bowl with a wide base, carefully pressed from the sides (otherwise it will turn over),
  • running wheel. African hedgehogs run in it with great pleasure, the ordinary and eared wheel hedgehogs will be ignored, and it will be difficult to get their wheel size.

Hedgehogs never live in groups, or families, or couples. Ezhat is set aside from the mother for a month and they do not intersect with her anymore. The meeting of two hedgehogs in tight conditions of captivity always ends with injuries of animals, and sometimes with the death of one of them.

In principle, the hedgehog is omnivorous, but about 2/3 of its diet is animal food, and it is highly desirable - live or fresh. These can be grasshoppers, cockroaches, meal worms, caterpillars (only natural green), various insects, lizards, frogs, mice, fry or small fish. Occasionally, live food can be replaced with pieces of meat, fish, boiled eggs. Without live food, at least periodically received, hedgehogs feel bad and start to hurt.

The remaining third of the diet - vegetables and fruits

Feed a hedgehog 1 - 2 times a day. Hedgehog eats as much as they give, and not a drop less. If the hedgehog has not eaten something, then either this is the wrong food, or the hedgehog got sick and you need to urgently show it to the veterinarian.

Hibernation

There is no physiological need for hibernation. Hedgehog hibernates only for the sake of life in adverse conditions - if it becomes too cold (10 - 12 degrees) and too dark (short light day). If conditions are favorable, the hedgehog does not fall into hibernation, it is not harmful for him. African hedgehogs can hibernate in the same way as ordinary ones, if they are forced by unfavorable living conditions.

If you want the hedgehog to go into hibernation, you have to fatten it up well beforehand, otherwise it just won’t wake up. Then gradually lower the temperature (for example, putting a hedgehog cage on the balcony).

To wake up the hedgehog, just put it in the heat, wrap it in a towel and put a bottle of warm water next to it - soon the animal will warm up and wake up.

How many hedgehogs live at home

Homes for this mammal are better conditions than in the wild, so they live longer in the apartment. The number of years lived is influenced by the origin of the hedgehog.

An ordinary hedgehog in an apartment can live up to 10 years.

Therefore, it is better to take a young hedgehog. In many cities there are special clubs lovers hedgehogs, where you can buy such a cub.

The average life expectancy of other hedgehog species:

  • eared: 3-6 years,
  • whitechest: 4 years,
  • African pygmy hedgehog 5 years,
  • Algerian 3-4 years
  • Chinese 5 years
  • Ethiopian 3-4 years.
If you want to have a spiny pet, you can buy a hedgehog

Since most species of hedgehogs come from the southern regions, they need additional heat. If you do not comply with this condition, then their lifespan is reduced.

To extend the life of your pet, you should follow these rules:

  • proper and rational nutrition,
  • you cannot keep several hedgehogs in one cell,
  • timely treatment to the vet.

African hedgehogs

They are divided into:

  • Algerian.
  • White-bellied.
  • Somali.
  • South African.

These hedgehogs love heat and high humidity.

  • Daursky.
  • Chinese.

This species prefers high temperature, but not too high humidity.

Eurasian

  • Amur
  • East European.
  • European.

This genus is adapted to Russian conditions.

This species has good immunity and small dimensions.

Care and maintenance rules

It is impossible to move freely around the apartment and do without a home to the hedgehog, since for him there are many dangers here.

Basic housing requirements for this mammal:

  • temperature of 22-25 degrees
  • the house should be protected from drafts and from direct exposure to the sun's rays (the best option is to place the house on the table),
  • there must be at least half a meter free inside (the best option is 60x90 cm),
  • the surface must be flat
  • a hedgehog apartment must be well ventilated on the one hand, and on the other hand it must be kept warm.
Hedgehog house

Placement options include:

  1. Cage: it is better to use special cages for guinea pigs or rabbits. The minimum size is 60x90 cm. The bottom should be solid and even. Between rods should be a distance of 2-2.5 cm.
  2. Dune: made of plastic. Superficially resembles a terrarium. Rarely found the required size, so you have to keep the lid open.
  3. Residential shelving: has several floors. Ideal for keeping two hedgehogs. This type of housing is expensive.

House Cleaning

Cleaning products can be:

  • soap: it should not have a pungent smell, since they have a very strong sense of smell,
  • chlorhexidine solution (2 tbsp. per 1 liter of water),
  • disinfectants (ZooSan, Alaminol, etc.),
  • Wet wipes, odorless (baby),
  • soda: for 1 liter of water is taken 6 tbsp. l

A heavy ceramic or plastic bowl with weighting agent is necessary for drinking.

Container materials must be of high quality and free of odors. From the tap water can not be given.

There are special nipple drinkers. They are easy to use and more sterile. However, when using it, the hedgehog needs to bend the trunk strongly, and it can also damage its teeth by biting metal or sticking its tongue in the tube.

Full transfer to capacity is carried out until the animal learns to drink from it.

Buy a special drinker at the pet store, which is hung on the cage outside

Hedgehogs need to walk daily for 3 hours. For this apartment fit. During walking you should constantly monitor the hedgehog, as there are many dangerous things in the apartment.

Diet and feeding

For an adult and a small hedgehog, the diet is different:

  1. Small: very small fed from a pipette after 2-3 hours with diluted boiled milk water (2: 1 ratio). After eating a pet, you should massage your belly. In the month, milk porridges, lean meat, boiled egg are added to the diet. Dairy products are removed when the weight reaches 300 grams.
  2. For adults: acquired bloodworm and other insects, meat and fish of low-fat varieties (raw and cooked), boiled liver, fresh fruits and vegetables. An adult is fed 2 times a day for 50 g.

Do home hedgehogs hibernate

In the fall, the animal hibernates. Before its occurrence is to increase the feeding. Before hibernation, the animal becomes sluggish. It is worth preparing a place in advance: any place where the temperature is not higher than 5 degrees. For it is necessary to make a nest of sawdust. In this state, the animal is until spring. In apartments where it is warm, they rarely hibernate, which reduces the number of years lived.

Neighborhood hedgehog with other pets

Understand whether the pet can get along with any other pet, perhaps by experience. Cats, when they learn that a rodent has needles that can be pricked, stop being aggressive. With small breeds of dogs, the same thing happens with cats.

The hedgehog is capable of friendly relations with all tenants of the house

If the dog is large, it will try to kill the hedgehog. They get along with rodents, guinea pigs. But for a long time in one cell they can not be left.

With proper care, he will be able to live a longer period of time.

The owner Alexander is 22 years old, Mirra is 8 months old. Now this “bun” (as the guy affectionately calls the pet) weighs four kilograms, (an adult raccoon grows to 20). A basin of water appears from somewhere, toys are immersed in it, and the raccoon rushes swiftly ... To splash around. Now the name "raccoon poloskun" becomes obvious: to rinse food, things and everything that gets under the arm of this beast in the blood. And the raccoon needs around the clock attention. As soon as they forget about him, he begins to foul. For example, it climbs on the head or, holding a grudge, tears off the wallpaper in the corner. Nobody, says the host of the raccoon, and after a while he adds. “But I have never regretted it once” (details).

Dwarf hedgehogs have become pets in many countries around the world. However, in Russia this breed is still little known. African hedgehogs are a specially bred domestic breed. They are smaller than the forest (an adult hedgehog is about 20 centimeters long), they do not stomp, do not emit any unpleasant odors and do not hibernate. But the habit of sleeping during the day and walking at night with them has been preserved. Hedgehogs are not vegetarians at all, and most of all they love meat and insects, but they are happy to eat cat food (details).

The cyclist saved the cat, and the cat ... saved him!

Photo: Maria LENTZ

They say - "only in the cinema ...", and then on the contrary, only in life it happens. A cyclist rides through the bustling streets of Krasnoyarsk ... with a cat on his shoulder. And fluffy gets incredible pleasure from driving. And the story of Morda and his master, Vladimir Ilivanov, is amazing. The cyclist saved the cat, and he thanked him a hundredfold. The muzzle, being still an insensitive kitten, by an absurd coincidence of circumstances, almost became a dinner for the crows: they drove its birds to a tree, pecked it up to blood. Vladimir saw this disgrace by chance, climbed up the trunk and removed the small one. Morda settled with the cyclist, but, like the pulling cats, did not want to sit at home - he was addicted to skiing along with the owner. On one of these trips we nearly crashed - flew off the mountain, Vladimir lost consciousness. Woke up from the fact that the muzzle licks his face: they say, get up, why did he spill. Only Vladimir got up, looking - a quad bike rushes at him. If I had been lying, the driver would not have noticed him in the dark, would have driven straight into his head (details).

Ufimka has got a tropical animal - nose

Photo: Timur SHARIPKULOV

Nosuha (differently it is called koati) Barbara is the only one in Bashkiria. The Internet reported conflicting information - whether the little animals belong to the order of the Medvevs, or the raccoon. Other sites claimed that it was generally ... possum. “Our Barbara belongs to the raccoon, and she got her name because of the long nose, which allows her to easily catch her food - after all, the coati nosuhi are predators,” hostess Oksana told us. - Of course, keeping your nose at home is very difficult. She loves to bite the wires, tear the wallpaper and pokaryabat furniture. But, despite her seemingly wildness, Varya understands everything - when she is cursed, she shrinks, and when you say gentle words to her, you praise her like this - “Varyushechka dear, honey, our girl” - she is lifting her fluffy tail with happiness up (details).

Chameleons are different

Not always keep exotic animals - something like an extreme. There are quite harmless pets, but you can hardly find them in each apartment. An ordinary Saratov member, Vadim Lyadyaev, “registered” a real Yemeni chameleon in the room. "They are rarely chosen as pets, probably because it is troublesome," explains Vadim, stroking a green friend. They need a spacious terrarium with a certain ventilation system, live food and a drip water supply system - chameleons drink only dew and rain drops, therefore, ordinary drinkers do not suit them ”(details).

Pets

Hedgehogs are the sweetest little animals that really require a minimum of attention from you. However, it should be borne in mind - if you rarely contact with such a pet, then hedgehog can be quite aggressive, bringing a lot of problems.

Hedgehogs are made for you if you like independent animals. They are singles by nature, and usually lead an appropriate lifestyle. Hedgehog is better to keep in a cage (as for rabbits), but do not forget - they are well able to climb, and why close it with a lid so that the hedgehog does not escape.

Hedgehogs mainly eat food for cats or dogs, however, it is necessary to periodically add eggs, insects, vegetables and fruits, and cooked meat to the diet. Besides, hedgehogs need to bathe regularlyby keeping them clean.

You should also know that hedgehogs are very susceptible to various diseases (at least, compared to many other animals), so you should be careful. Hedgehogs are great pets for older children. If hedgehogs pay more attention, they become quite obedient and sociable.

Guinea pigs are hardly unusual pets. These lovely creatures, which are often brought up for their very friendly and sociable character, are at the same time one of the largest rodents.

Adult guinea pigs can be up to thirty centimeters long. They are very sweet and love to contact their masters and other guinea pigs. They live on average from five to ten years. These are the best animals from which you can begin to teach children of any age to care and responsibility.

Guinea pigs are much less temperamental than, for example, hamsters, and much less likely that they will bite you. However, they need constant care. The diet of pigs should consist of a special granulated feed, hay, as well as vegetables and fruits.

In pet stores, guinea pig cages are sold, in which you can add various accessories (houses) so that your pig has where to hide. However, the installation of a wheel is not recommended for guinea pigs, as your pet can easily injure the legs and back.

Hamsters are extremely popular as pets, because of their cute appearance, fluffy fur and relatively low maintenance costs. They usually easy to take yourself in, although some of their small-sized species can be quite hectic, especially females.

Larger species, such as the Syrian hamster, are more peaceful and better suited for your children, who will surely want to catch on the bed with them. In addition, large species of hamsters are not so gentle, rather docile and, if I may say so, more educated.

On the other hand, hamsters are also completely self-sufficient individuals, so they need such adaptations in the cage as tunnels, junctions and wheel to maintain health. In addition, they do not necessarily need partners.

However, the disadvantage is the short life span of hamsters - from two and a half to three years. It means that need to be mentally prepared to the experiences of your child due to the death of a pet. By the way, hamsters are predominantly nocturnal, dormant for most of the day.

Our smaller brothers

Perhaps a rat is not the first thing that comes to your mind when your child suddenly expresses a desire to receive a pet as a gift. In vain. Rat is supreme sociable and intelligent animalthat needs minimal care.

In addition, they are very playful and love to tinker with all sorts of toys, balls, strings, and can even have fun with a roll of toilet paper to your joy. It turns out that rats are ideal small pets?

It turns out that way. In addition to friendliness, intelligence and sociability, they demonstrate great affection for their masters. In other words, be prepared for the fact that your offspring also kindle reciprocate to them.

Rats have a wonderful memory for such small creatures. They are very unpretentious in food, although for them you can also buy the most suitable food in the respective stores. However, like hamsters, rats have a very short life cycle - from two to three years.

Gerbils are collective animals that form colonies in their natural environment. That is why they are recommended to be kept in small groups - from two to four individuals. But don't be scared - they are very inexpensive to keep.

They prefer mixed food, very often making quite large stocks of food (if the opportunity arises). They can be taken on hands and ironed, but it is worth doing it very carefully, as gerbils are extremely gentle creatures, they are easy to do harm.

There are a very large number of species of gerbil, but at home they often contain the so-called Mongolian gerbil. These animals are great cleaners and practically do not smell. Unlike hamsters, gerbils are not nocturnal animals.

They are fairly independent creatures, so they can easily entertain themselves for a long period of time. The life span of gerbils is rather short - from three to four years, for which it is worth preparing morally in advance.

Ferrets are extremely active, terribly inquisitive and extremely agile animals. At the same time they are very nice in appearance and have a fluffy fur coat, which is very pleasant to the touch. They live longer than many of their smaller brethren. - from eight to ten years.

One has only to let the ferret out of its cage, as it immediately begins to run around the house, studying every corner and crack, so they should not be left outside the cage unattended. If the ferret is outside, someone must look after it, otherwise you will be tortured to look for it.

They definitely need more attention than rats or hamsters, because they do not feel particularly comfortable if they are in a cage all day. It turns out to be a rather paradoxical situation - ferrets should not be left unattended outside the cage, but also keeping them in a cage all day is undesirableeven if you are not at home.

Ferrets willingly go on hands. They will not bite you, unless, of course, accidentally harm them. These animals can play with you or your children all day long. They get their pretty special attraction somewhere closer to three years.

Of all the furry pets that are offered in this list, chinchillas are the most furry. Their fur is thick and silky. Because of this, chinchillas are probably most pleasant to take on your hands, iron.

On the other hand, the chinchilla doesn’t really like being squeezed. Better give her the opportunity to run around your home. An adult chinchilla reaches a length of up to 30 centimeters and even more, and the females are more males.

Chinchillas practically do not emit an unpleasant smell. And even their discharge does not smell for several days. These cute animals live from 10 to 15 years old. The colors of the fur of these creatures range from the brightest tones to black, like soot.

Chinchillas do not require much attention. They feed on special foods that can be freely purchased at pet stores. Males chinchillas better to start a pair. But the females of these animals are loners, so you can keep them one by one.

Pet for your child

A hermit crab is by no means the most common pet from this list of recommended pets. However, they are very educated and very inexpensive in contentso great for this role.

For maintenance, they need an aquarium with 15 centimeters of sand with pebbles on the surface so that your pet has the opportunity to move while climbing. The hermit crab is free to take on his hands, but he is quite capable of doing so without calf tenderness.

This is a very peaceful, calm animal, not at all like those pets that you want to take up and stroke. It is better to watch a hermit crab from afar as he moves slowly in its aquariumburrowing into the sand to hide their delicate little face there.

These little creatures are quite sociable and quite capable of helping you brighten up a lonely evening in your company. Sometimes you can even hear a hermit crab making characteristic sounds.

Hermit crabs are able to live up to thirty years without needing any special attention. However, crayfishes love food variety, so they may not like it when food repeats. If you feed them fish, then next time it is better to give special food or fruits and vegetables.

In addition, they should be given fresh dechlorinated water and salt water in separate containers. Hermit crabs tend to hide in empty shells. They need calcium, so to them in the aquarium it is worth from time to time to throw shells of a suitable size.

In general, hermit crabs are omnivorous scavengers, so along with their usual food, you should feed them with fish remains. But vegetables and fruits must first be washed well in the same dechlorinated water.

Hermit crabs should be treated extremely carefully. For all that, this animal does not overload itself for a long time, hermit crabs are sociable animals, therefore they should be kept in groups of three or four individuals.

Parrots - this is one of the most popular pets, and for good reason. They are very playful by nature and love to interact, not to mention their attractive appearance.

There are many different types of domestic parrots, a variety of colors - from simple gray to painted in all colors of the rainbow. Parrots have a long life cycle. Some individuals are able to live to 80 years or more!

As you know, these sociable creatures have the ability to copy various sounds that are heard. It is necessary to be careful with words, but not that your kids can learn a few new words from parrotswhat you are very surprised!

Parrots need a cage that is large enough so that they can spread their wings, flying from one perch to another. These birds love nuts and salty crackers.

In their cage must be regularly maintained clean. Despite their sociability, you can't avoid being bitten by your beak in your fingers, because they are not particularly fond of when they are taken on their hands (especially strangers).

Parrots are very active pets. They can be very noisy, uttering shrill cries for several minutes, until they pay attention. If you have acquired such a pet, then you need to be ready for lifelong care of them.

Rabbits, which are very cute, gentle and intelligent creatures, very playful to the same. However, these animals are difficult to recommend to little kids, because rabbits don't like being rudely grabbed: sudden movements of babies are capable of scaring them.

Rabbits are great as a gift for more adult children who understand how to treat them. And then they demonstrate a peaceful and calm nature. In addition, they are very well amenable to training (another plus to their fluffy fur).

In order for the rabbits to stay healthy, they need daily physical activity. From food, these animals must be given special food, as well as some vegetables and fruits.

There is a wide variety of rabbits of different types, shapes, sizes and colors. Some species require daily brushing, which helps to clean their fur. In fact, it is one of the most domesticated rodents on our planet.

You can easily become attached to them, especially considering the fact that they live from five to ten years. Rabbits need to be released regularly from their cages, playing with them. In these animals extremely weak digestive systemtherefore, they require special care and constant monitoring.

With hedgehogs, we often meet, walking through the woods. Their natural habitat is very convenient - there is always something to profit from and hide in case of danger. But sometimes these small animals themselves come to the house in search of something edible and remain there as a pet. They are good-natured and unpretentious, besides they are helpers - they destroy pests in summer cottages and kitchen gardens, thus finding food for themselves.

Catching a prickly friend in the forest or a park area is not difficult, because coiling to protect themselves, they do not run away anywhere. But it is worth being vigilant and reasonable.

  • First, the animal living in the forest does not need additional care and is in itself capable of living well.

There are plenty of such places in our country, and after examining all the necessary documents and veterinary certificates, you can bring a spiny pet home. Such hedgehogs quickly adapt to life in an apartment or house and get along well with their owners.

Correct content

Having bought a hedgehog, not many people know how to take care of him, so you shouldn’t let him run around the house freely. It can easily get tangled in wires, fall or even get hurt, so a cage is best suited for a comfortable stay. It may be wooden or metal, but in no case a glass terrarium, which can be detrimental to the animal.

Sawdust or straw is used as a litter. To avoid unpleasant smell, suitable filler for cats.

Do not forget about the bowls of water and food, and that the drink is not poured, you can buy a special drinker for birds. The hedgehog will quickly learn to drink from it, and the problem of a wet cell will not annoy you.

It is worth remembering that hedgehogs are carnivores, because ordinary grass or leaves will not suit him at all. Animals in nature feed on snails, bugs or worms, but at home they will not give up chopped meat. You can also replace beetles with bloodworms, which you can easily find at any market or specialized fishing stores.

Boiled liver or fish will also be a useful food for a spiky friend. Sometimes you can please him with fresh carrots or apples, as well as bread, soaked in milk, kefir, ryazhenka.

It is necessary to feed a pet 2 times a day in portions not more than 50 g.

Have a meal, you can sleep

After a hearty lunch, the hedgehog prefers to sleep, but at night the animal is awake, so you need to be prepared for the fact that while you rest (if you manage to fall asleep), the thorny little ball will run around the cage and entertain itself in every way. It is better to move it in advance to a place where the hedgehog will not disturb anyone with its night activity.

In the autumn the animal hibernates, having saved up the necessary amount of subcutaneous fat. If you notice that your pet has become very sluggish, it means that he is going to fall asleep for a long time. In this case, you need to find a cool place (no more than +5 degrees), where the hedgehog needs to make a comfortable nest.

It is a mistake to assume that the animal will fall asleep under normal conditions. This can not only badly affect his condition, but even cause death.

Some features

The content of such an unusual pet will not cause problems if you remember some important points.

  1. Hedgehog - a loner. If you want to buy a pair of hedgehogs, they must be placed in different cells. Only opposite-sex animals can live together during the breeding season.
  2. It is rather difficult to get offspring from domesticated species. To do this, you need to significantly prepare and choose the right time.
  3. One of the disadvantages of the hedgehog for the owners are its sharp claws. Therefore, if you decide to let your pet run, cover the floor with newspapers or any other material so as not to spoil the flooring.

Proper care and care will give you a pleasant and unusual friend for the whole family, which, despite its spines, is very good-natured.
