Homemade cough drops with karkade tea, ginger and spices - a recipe with photos

The ability to make sugar candy at home can help during colds, when we are often bothered by coughing. After all, if he is dry, hated, there is a desire to soften the irritated throat with something. Even ordinary caramel with menthol brings relief. Well, in the pharmacy network you can find a huge selection of cough medicines in this form, containing in their composition various anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial substances.

It is more difficult to find the right medicine for a child or a patient who has an allergic reaction. But everything turns out to be much simpler if you know how to make cough drops with your own hands. In this case, all components are known, and we can always eliminate the wrong ingredient or replace it with another. It is easier to give a child medicine in the form of candy, lozenges than a pill or even syrup. It is better to offer such medicine to children after 3 years of age, since they can choke with caramel.

Remember! Such treatment can only lead to short-term relief of cold symptoms (coughing, sore throat or sore throat), and anti-inflammatory and antibacterial drugs may be needed. Therefore, if within 3 days the state has not improved, and even more so if it has worsened, it is necessary to consult a doctor.

How to make cough lozenges yourself

Honey as well as burnt sugar is used as a basis for therapeutic sweets. But remember that when boiling honey loses most of its beneficial properties and at the same time is a strong allergen. A caramel of burnt sugar is an old means of traditional medicine, perfectly softens sore throats and relieves dry cough. Even in ancient times, many homes knew the recipes for this medicine.

To make homemade cough lozenges the easiest way is to prepare:

  1. a bowl
  2. wooden sticks or skewers, toothpicks,
  3. silicone mat or parchment paper.

Cooking caramel is best in a bowl or saucepan. You can also take a small saucepan. When making lollipops, you will need wooden sticks, skewers or toothpicks, but they will have sharp ends. On a silicone mat or parchment paper that is carefully smeared with vegetable oil (no smell), cooked sweets are laid out to cool and dry. Silicone molds for ice are also suitable.

The recipe itself includes:

  1. 1 cup of sugar,
  2. 4 tablespoons of boiled water,
  3. juice of half a lemon.

Pour sugar into a saucepan, add water to it and mix well until sugar is evenly wet. Put the saucepan on a strong fire. The juice of half a lemon is added when the sugar is completely dissolved. We do this to prevent its crystallization. Do not forget to constantly interfere. As soon as the mixture boils, you need to turn down the heat and boil on. Usually it takes about 8-10 minutes to cook.

The degree of readiness of caramel is determined in several ways:

  • By color. He becomes amber.
  • By changing the consistency. Viscosity increases.

When the syrup becomes viscous, it is necessary to drop a few drops on the edge of the cooled saucer and allow it to cool. If the mixture remains sticky, sticks to the teeth, continue cooking. If it is frozen and has acquired the characteristics of caramel, cooking is no longer necessary. Instead of a saucer, you can use a glass of cold water in which to place a few drops of syrup. When the sugar mass is ready, you need to put it on a silicone mat with a teaspoon, leaving a place between the syrup drops, as they spread out. If you make a lollipop - use cooked skewers, laying them out on paper beforehand. After cooling, pour the caramel drops with powdered sugar, starch. Folded in a box, store in a cool dry place.

How to make cough drops more effective? In the preparation of therapeutic sweets in their composition, you must add components that have antitussive, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory action. This decoction or infusions of various medicinal herbs: honey, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, essential or butter.

Ginger and Clove Candy

In the prepared base of sugar, water and lemon juice, add 1 tablespoon of honey, 1 teaspoon of ginger (can be ground) and 2-3 pieces of cloves, crushed in a mortar. Ginger is a good antiseptic, that is, it has a disinfecting effect. An excellent antitussive that strengthens the immune system. For the treatment of patients who have peptic ulcer, aggravation of gastritis, inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis), it should be used carefully. Clove is also a good antiseptic. And you can talk about the benefits of honey for a long time. It strengthens the immune system well, softens the throat and relieves the feeling of tickling, has antitussive and anti-inflammatory action. But remember that honey is a strong allergen.

Herbal Candy

Cough lozenges at home can be made on the basis of medicinal herbs. Used for their preparation of a decoction of ready-made fees, purchased at the pharmacy, or compiled by themselves. It is important to know what action a given medicinal plant has, in what cases it can be used, and in which it is impossible.

Most often, when making cough drops on the basis of herbs at home, in their recipe include sage, thyme, coltsfoot, elderberry flowers, chamomile. Prepare a decoction necessary in advance. In a glass of water, brew two tablespoons of the herbal mixture, simmer over low heat for 15-20 minutes. Give a little brew, then strain. If you make an infusion in a thermos, then the collection prepared and poured with boiling water should be infused for at least two hours, and even better - the whole night.

Pour the decoction (infusion) into the pan and use it as a basis for making caramel. To do this, add sugar (2 cups), honey (2 tablespoons). With excess sugar, the syrup can crystallize. Therefore, first put half the required amount. When it is completely dissolved, add the rest in parts. Cook the mixture over low heat until thickened. If a drop of syrup during the sample does not spread and keeps its shape, does not stick to the teeth, proceed to the formation of candy.

Candies with cloves and ghee

They are good help with dry, hacking cough, reduce inflammation in the throat. Pieces of 10-15 cloves pour hot water (half a cup), boil for 10-15 minutes, then strain. In melted sugar pour the resulting broth. When the mixture is almost ready, add the ghee, stir and continue to simmer. Readiness is checked by color and consistency.

Lozenges with essential oils

Pastils can also contain essential oils of cinnamon, eucalyptus, anise, cedar, possessing antimicrobial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory action. A pleasant citrus flavor is obtained by incorporating an extract of lemon and orange in the candy. Since the essential oils are very volatile, they need to be added at the very end of cooking the caramel mass and not more than a few drops. If you are preparing a medical candy for a child, try to do without such a component.

Cough Drops with Ginger, Black Pepper and Melissa

For their preparation you will need, in addition to sugar, water and lemon, a bunch of lemon balm, ginger root, and black pepper. Chop the greens and squeeze the juice through cheesecloth. In the same way to get ginger juice. Add a pinch of ground black pepper. In the resulting mixture pour into the sugar, melted to a light brown color. All thoroughly mixed, cook over low heat. The finished caramel takes on a dark brown color.

Precautionary measures

Since the temperature of the caramel during boiling reaches 150 degrees, be careful. Prepare a bowl of cold water in case of syrup on the skin. It is necessary to use granulated sugar. Brown sugar and powdered sugar for making candy is not suitable. Thoroughly mix the sugar with water so that it is evenly moist. This, as well as the constant mixing of the sugar mass during cooking, prevents the formation of lumps.

Important! When using drugs from cough sugar, remember that it is contraindicated in diabetes. Overweight people should not abuse them either.

  • Caramel for children under the age of three is better not to give.
  • During a coughing attack, the contents of the mouth can get into the respiratory tract.
  • When preparing lozenges, do not use components that cause allergies.

When are the candies effective?

Lollipops made from medicinal ingredients really help relieve a cough and, in some cases, completely cure it. But it should be understood that coughing is not a disease, but only its manifestation. This feature may indicate the following:

  • about getting into the respiratory tract irritant (allergen, dust, chemicals, etc.),
  • the presence of infection
  • about sore throat caused by hypothermia.

Homemade cough drops are effective only in the latter case, if the unpleasant symptom is caused by a common cold.

Features of the manufacture of candy

To get a candy, you need a base. As it can be burnt sugar or honey. Both components will not only give the desired texture of candy, but will also become an excellent emollient.

Each candy recipe, in addition to the base, includes additional ingredients that, in the process of using delicacies, will have beneficial properties. These ingredients include infusions from the following herbs:

Herbs can be harvested on their own, or they can be purchased at a pharmacy, given the effect you need to achieve during the preparation of a tasty medicine. The infusion is prepared in advance by pouring 2 tablespoons of dry raw material with a glass of boiling water. In the candy, you can add an infusion made from one or more herbs.

In the process of making candy, you can add essential oils with pronounced bactericidal, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. These oils include:

Since essential oils quickly evaporate, it is necessary to add them to the future medicine at the very last stage of preparation.

Honey or sugar, along with the other components, is heated in an enamelled vessel. Aluminum packaging is not suitable for these purposes. The resulting mass for pouring is poured into silicone or metal molds. If not, you can use parchment paper, which poured the melted mixture, giving it a round or oval shape.

Molds or paper are pre-lubricated with vegetable oil. Children can make lollipops using ordinary toothpicks.

Ginger Cinnamon Candy

Ginger has been used for the treatment of cough for centuries. It has the following spectrum of action:

  • destroys microbes,
  • improves blood circulation
  • has an antioxidant effect,
  • warms
  • eliminates inflammation and pain,
  • reduces the temperature
  • disinfects.

In addition, ginger has an expectorant effect, due to which it is often included in the composition of antitussive candies.

To make a delicious cough aid, you need the following ingredients:

  • ginger root,
  • Cinnamon - ½ tsp,
  • sugar - 1 cup.

Ginger root is crushed using a fine grater and squeezed out of the resulting mass juice through gauze, folded in several layers. The juice is poured into a glass, half filled with water.

Pour sugar into an enamel pot and melt, putting on slow fire. Pour the cinnamon into the molten mass, mix and then pour a ginger solution in a thin stream, stirring constantly.

Boil the mass until thick. You can check the readiness if you drop a lot on a saucer and after hardening try to bite your teeth. If the caramel does not stick to the teeth, the mass can be poured into molds.

Honey Ginger Candy

Honey contains many biologically active substances that are stored in it, even with prolonged boiling. To make honey ginger lozenges, you will need the following ingredients:

  • honey - 300 g,
  • ginger root (grated) - 1 tsp,
  • citrus juice (optional) - 1 tsp.

Combine components in an enamel container, put on a low heat and boil for about 1 hour. When the mass thickens, orange, lemon or grapefruit juice is poured into it. Juice is not a required component of candy. It only gives the sweet medicine a special aroma and enhances its beneficial properties.

Baby candy

Honey is certainly useful, and it’s hard to argue with that. But children are not recommended to use it in large quantities. In addition, some children it is contraindicated. Therefore, for them, cough lozenges at home are prepared on the basis of sugar.

Burnt sugar is not only a source of carbohydrates, but also an effective remedy that helps relieve coughing and eliminate unpleasant sensations in the throat. Various herbs are added to the sugar based caramel, including Sudanese rose, better known as karkade. Relieve cough and relieve sore throat will help butter, which is added to a therapeutic agent after melting.

Children will be treated with great enthusiasm if homemade cough drops are prepared with the addition of food dyes. If you do not want to use dyes, you can add the desired color of caramel by adding fruit or vegetable juices, for example, juice of cherries, beets, carrots or orange.

Sugar candies and sudan rose infusion

Before you start cooking caramel, you need to brew flowers of Sudanese rose (traditional hibiscus tea), pour 1 tablespoon of raw materials with 1 cup of boiling water. Add a pinch of chopped ginger root, as well as peppermint and anise. The tool must be infused for 30-40 minutes before cooling.

Infusion is filtered into an enameled pan. There also add 1.5 cups of sugar and heat the mixture over low heat, stirring constantly, until it thickens. Next, add some lemon juice to the composition, and then pour the mixture into molds.

Herbal Candies

To obtain a combined remedy, saving from cough, and facilitating the process of sputum discharge, 2-3 types of herbs are recommended to be added to the caramel.

The following ingredients are required to prepare a herbal medicine:

  • ¼ cups of shredded medicinal herbs (sage, elderberry, wild cherry bark),
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup of water.

Instead of the above herbs can be purchased at the pharmacy chest collection. Herbs pour boiling water and insist until cooling. Next, the finished infusion filter in the pan. Sugar is added there and cooked over low heat until thickened, stirring constantly. The finished composition is poured into molds or form candy on parchment paper.

When it is not recommended to take the drug

Sugar and honey are simple carbohydrates, which are contraindicated for people suffering from diabetes and pancreatic diseases.

The number of contraindications also include individual intolerance to the components provided by the recipe of candy. You should not take a sweet drug to people prone to allergic reactions.

In general, homemade lollipops are completely natural, do not contain any chemical additives and antibacterial agents. Therefore, they can be safely given even to small children.

Do not take lollipops during a strong coughing attack, as it increases the likelihood of caramel in the airways. The optimal daily dosage is 5-6 lozenges. This amount of funds will allow for a few days to relieve cough and eliminate other unpleasant cold symptoms. If during this time, improvement does not come, you need to consult a doctor.

  • pregnancy and lactation,
  • Children under the age of 2 years.

Who yes and who not

Coughing is not a disease, but only a symptom of it. Consequently, with the help of cough drops, we are dealing with manifestations of some kind of pathology that occurs in the respiratory tract. Their effectiveness will depend directly on the underlying disease.

The causes of cough, that is, indications for use, can be divided into three subgroups:

  • allergic - when the reflex becomes a protective reaction of the body to an allergen that has entered the respiratory system from the outside,
  • infectious or inflammatory - when the disease is provoked by pathogenic microflora, which causes an increased production of mucus, irritation and inflammation,
  • non-infectious - sore throat due to cold, mechanical or chemical irritation.

It is in the latter case (but only at the earliest stages) that one can count on the unconditional help of candy.

If you start taking this drug in time, then perhaps other drugs will not be needed. In all other cases, lozenges should be used only as part of complex therapy along with anti-inflammatory, antihistamine, antiviral and other means prescribed by a doctor.

Homemade cough drops have a minimum of contraindications because they are made from natural ingredients.

But still:

  • individual intolerance of any component,
  • diabetes and fructose intolerance,
  • bronchial asthma, as it often contains ethers, citrus fruits and herbs that can aggravate the course of this rather complex chronic disease.

We now turn directly to the question of how to make homemade cough drops with your own hands.

General rules

Before you begin all the "difficulties" of preparing a sweet medicine and seek out the best recipe for candy, you need to know some of the nuances.

If children and adults do cough lozenges themselves, following these tips, they will turn out to be no worse than pharmacy ones, and maybe even better:

  1. Medicinal herbs. Often pastilles are made on the basis of decoctions of medicinal herbs, roots, leaves and fruits. Are used: coltsfoot and elder, linden and St. John's wort, sage and chamomile, calendula and mint, thyme and lemongrass. Of these herbs, during inflammatory diseases, especially those accompanied by coughing, they prepare teas, multicomponent infusions, decoctions and alcohol tinctures.
  2. Essential oils. It should be borne in mind that not all esters are suitable for internal use. Recommended, safe and useful oils: ylang-ylang and tea tree, mint and bergamot, all citrus and geranium, patchouli and ginger, nutmeg, rosemary and some others.
  3. Honey. Unfortunately, when heated to high temperatures, the bee delicacy loses almost all of its useful properties, but it is impossible to cook candies otherwise, because caramelization occurs only when heated. But keep in mind that some varieties of honey after heat treatment can release toxic substances (which are carcinogenic). This does not mean that a person will immediately recover, but prolonged use leads to irreversible effects in the liver. It is better to use light monoflerny honey. Give advantage to flower, lime, acacia, sunflower, rapeseed. They are most suitable for heating.

The main thing - do not digest the sweetness. Otherwise, you will get burned-out sugar, and the medicine will be too bitter. DIY cough lozenges for children are the best way out. Indeed, in the pharmaceutical means, there are often components that are perceived by children as an allergen.

How to "guess" with a choice of cough lozenges

To pick up effective cough drops, you need to understand the mechanism of occurrence of this symptom. So, a cough may be:

  1. a consequence of inflammation of the tonsils and throat when it occurs when exposed to toxins of microbes and products formed by damage to their own tissues. Such a cough is dry (cleansing nothing) and frequent, accompanied by a sore throat. In this case, local remedies with anti-inflammatory effects can cure cough.
  2. as a result of inflammation of the trachea, bronchi or even the lungs, when the body, by creating such cough shocks, tries to remove sputum - mucus formed by the bronchial glands, in which the microbe and the products of the inflammation caused by it are dissolved. In this case, usually there is no tingling or sore throat, the person cannot suppress the cough by force of will (cough "comes from the chest"). It will help the tools that will translate dry cough into a wet,
  3. due to allergic inflammation of the respiratory tract, which occurs not only among allergy sufferers, when they inhale the pollen of certain plants, they come into contact with a perfume or household household remedy. Allergic cough can "connect" with inflammation of the airways. Then he is paroxysmal, accompanied by tearing, does not subside for a long time, and at the end of the attack a little clear mucous sputum can stand out. In this case, the effect will be the reception of antihistamine tablets. Pastilles in this case play a secondary role. You can take any of them, as long as they themselves do not cause allergies to this person. Their goal will be - the development of large amounts of saliva, which will help to moisturize the mucous membranes and stop the attack of cough,
  4. post-infectious, "residual", which is observed after suffering bronchitis or pneumonia. Such a cough - but only if it is proven that the inflammatory process is over - should be treated with lozenges containing drugs that turn off the cough center in the brain (they contain dextromethorphan or folcodine).

If the cough is wet, that is, accompanied by the release of sputum, this indicates inflammation of the lower respiratory tract. It is not treated with lozenges (lozenges), but as a complex therapy, and among the drugs, either expectorant or sputum-reducing agents are used.

Important: antitussive drugs along with those that dilute sputum, do not apply. Otherwise, the liquid sputum will accumulate in the bronchi, but not expelled, increasing inflammation and making it difficult to breath. That is, if you have already been assigned “Lasolvan” (“Ambroxol”), “Pektolvan”, “Flyuditek”, “ACC” (“Acetylcysteine”), take any means on the basis of detromethorphan (“Tussin”, “Coldrex”, some Chinese dry cough drops) can not!

Homemade lollipops

So, there are such basic recipes for anti-inflammatory cough drops.

Take a root of ginger 2-3 cm long, half a cup of sugar and honey, half a lemon, 200 ml of water, 4 buds of cloves.

Take a saucepan with a thick bottom, add sugar to it and pour water. Peel the ginger root, cut it into thin plates and add it there too. Put on the fire, and after dissolving the sugar, add honey, ground cloves and juice of half a lemon.

Cook over low heat, stirring constantly. Do not worry: the mixture will foam and turn brown. The mixture will be ready when, dripping on baking paper, having powdered with powdered sugar, it will not spread.

Candy shape on the same paper with powder. Keep them in the refrigerator so that they do not spread.

Another recipe for cough sugar candies. It is based on a mixture of herbs dissolved in strong green tea or karkade tea.

Take half a cup of strong specified tea, 1.5 cups of sugar (you can take 1 cup of sugar and 0.5 glass of honey), juice of half a lemon, on a pinch of dried herbs:

Instead of dry herbs, you can take the same essential oils - 2 drops each, only then you should not give such sweets to children, especially with a tendency to allergies.

You will also need dry powder for sprinkling candies, as well as 1 glass of water.

Heat the water, but do not bring it to a boil. Add there 1 tbsp. tea, add all herbs, leave for 30 minutes.

After half an hour, pour the mixture into a saucepan with a thick bottom, add the rest of the tea and sugar, and then boil until thick (the sample is the same as in recipe No. 1) - a drop on paper should not spread.

Turn off the heat, add lemon juice, mix, pour into forms or dunk on baking paper sprinkled with powdered sugar.

This is a proven recipe for making lozenges for children from 3 years of cough. To do this, you just need to take 250-300 grams of honey and 1 teaspoon of ground ginger. Optionally, you can add half a teaspoon of lemon juice or decoction of licorice root. They need to be mixed, put on a small fire and cook until the mixture turns brown and, once on the clean surface of the plate, begins to lay 1 drop.

If you want to make cough lozenges beautiful and appetizing - in the form of a bunny or squirrel, so that they are on a stick, buy a special form for lozenges. Before pouring caramel into it, lubricate the grooves in the form of a dressing and squirrels with oil, not abundantly. After pouring the mass, place a wooden stick in the middle of the mold, which has no sharp end.

Best recipes

Cooking cough drops at home with recipes that have passed the test of time is very simple. After all, in childhood, everyone cooked sweets from sugar and water or milk. The principle is the same, only the ingredients are greater.

The easiest and most useful recipe (because without cooking) is suitable even for a small child. Candy is not so “stony”, but rather fragile.

Would need:

  • 100 g of coconut oil and honey at room temperature
  • a teaspoon of cinnamon,
  • no more than 7-8 drops of essential oil (rosemary or tea tree).

Using an immersion blender or mixer, beat the butter and honey until a fluffy consistency is obtained. Add cinnamon and ether and beat again until smooth. Then, in silicone or ice molds, pre-lubricated with any vegetable oil (refined), decompose the resulting mass and send to the refrigerator for solidification.
